Unpopular Pop Culture opinions

(Anonymous) 2014-07-10 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Sort of a mixture of unpopular fandom opinions and unpopular RL opinions.

I don't really care about music. I don't listen to music in my daily life, I just can't be arsed. It's not that I don't like it, it's just too much hassle for me to search out music that I like and maybe make playlists or whatever.

My parents are the same way. I find it bizarre, but neither of them listens to music/has any favourite bands/etc. They both listen to talk radio.

I used to have neighbors who didn't own a stereo or even a radio. They had money, they just didn't listen to music.

This is really old now, but I remember at the time everyone was complaining about Rebecca Black's Friday song and thinking "it's... not that much worse than a lot of the songs people that age like." I mean, Lady Gaga had "Bad Romance" with the lyrics "rara ooh lala" or whatever, and Miley Cyrus's Party in the USA (I think) had "I'm gonna party like yeah" - both of those are only marginally better than hers. The difference is Rebecca Black doesn't have the voice to get away with it. And was totally set up by her asshole of an agent or whatever the guy was.

tl;dr I really think half the popular music out there sucks anyway, and Rebecca Black just didn't have the hype or voice to get away with shitty lyrics.

SA - wanted to take that last bit back a little, I actually do like "Bad Romance", but the "rarara" part makes no sense and is mostly just fun to dance to.

Kim Kardashian is vaguely annoying but not all that worse than many other people and doesn't deserve half the vitriol she gets.

Justin Beiber doesn't look like a girl.

The beebs is definitely losing the femme, and that makes me sad because if he was a girl, he would definitely be my type (looks wise anyway). I don't really know why that makes me sad.

I don't think any genre of music is inherently superior to any other, and I don't think popular=bad. If I like a song, I'll buy it regardless of genre. I like everything from pop and hip-hop to indie to country to classical.

Agreed. It took me a long time to even notice genre. When I was a kid I would be all excited to share a new song I liked with my brother and then he would immediately go "ugh, it's country" and that was the end of it.

Honestly, this is my mindset when it comes to music now.

I honestly feel like no one nowadays listens to just one genre of music.

Agreed too. There are some genres I am less likely to like, but that's just because of my tastes and doesn't reflect on the quality, and there are probably songs I like in most genres.

Though I am very muddy on music genres.

I was coming here to say basically this. Like I don't even care about the reputation the artist has. As long as I like the music I don't care.

Celebrity politics are really tiresome to keep up with.

I also hate when people assume that because you listen to their music you blindly agree to everything they do, but that's another bucket of worms.

I like Mel Gibson movies. Yes, I think he's insane but he's incredibly talented.

And seeing all of these Biblical movies coming out of late makes me realize how good The Passion of the Christ is. For one thing, he was not afraid to make the movie non-English. It's weird seeing Biblical figure spout in posh English accents. Gibson trusted his audience enough that they could handle reading subtitles. I would love to see him tackle Exodus. If he made TPOC that brutal, can you imagine what he would do with the Plagues of Egypt?

I'm not into big brother forms of media, at least in the UK, seem to attract vapid fame hungry wannabes. Ditto the likes of Geordie Shore. (God I hate that one). How anyone believes these aren't scripted (maybe BB isn't but these reality shows with recurring casts definitely are).

In before I'm called a hater. I have no desire to be famous.

I think "realistic" shows are just talky and dull.

Re: Unpopular Pop Culture opinions

This might be closer to fandom, but when it comes to shows/movies I like, I don't care that much about the actors or actresses. When reviews call characters by their actors' names, it actually bugs me. I just see the two as inherently separate.

Agreed.

I also don't like the obsession with celebrity's personal lives (interest should be more about their work imo) and I don't really care about celebrity culture as a whole.

Seth McFarlane's work is fucking terrible and he's kind of a jerk, but I still want to fuck him.

If you think Sharknado is a good bad movie, don't even fucking talk to me. Come back when you've seen something that's not an obvious cash grab.

Lately, Hollywood movies feel too slick and pandering for me to really enjoy them. It's why haven't seen a new film in like six months. I kind of feel like bitter jerk, but eh.

I don't like Johnny Cash's music, but I do like country music.

I hate stand-up comedy, and pretty much any intentional comedy period (with some exceptions).

Seconding you on not liking Johnny Cash's music. If that means I have no taste, so be it. I like country music, but mostly stuff from the early 00's and older.

The popularity of that opinion probably depends on the circles you run in, but I fucking hate love triangles. Especially if the love triangle is set up as "loving, caring, obviously right guy" and "kind of dangerous, asshole-ish jerk" and gets solved by reveling (what an original plot twist) that the right guy actually isn't so nice after all and the jerk is actually a jerk-with a heart of gold and the girl's long lost soul mate.

I really can't stand 99% of movie romances these days. They are all so goddamn samey. This whole decade has been developing a very specific, bland, recognizable, and unvarying romance model, which is almost uniformly both dreary and pretentious as hell.

Meanwhile, I sorta-kinda like those dumb little tacked-on romance subplots in movies that have nothing to do with romance. Because they tend to at least feel fun and spontaneous, even if they're dumb and illogical and wildly underdeveloped.

X-Men: Days of Future Past was okay. Not horrible, but certainly far from the "OMG IT WAS SO GOOD!!!" reactions it seemed to get from everyone I know.
