I could've written this secret and I'm pleased someone else is bold enough to say it. I always feel like I'm not "allowed" to dislike XY because everyone else loves it. I think you used the perfect word to describe XY- 'weak'. The elements are all there, it just felt rushed and there was something really lacking. I don't really like the 3D much myself, but I'm willing to over look it for ORAS.

I do think they had some big shoes to fill after gen 5 as well. Everything about gen 5 was so good and I'm not surprised that XY pales in comparison. I'm hoping a Z version might offer some improvements and polish Kalos up to everything it could've been, though.

B/W was surprisingly entertaining; I hate Gen 4, so this was definitely an improvement. I never did get B2/W2, are they worthwhile?

AYRT

If you enjoyed BW's plot, then BW2's is an unnecessary, boring extension to it. There's a couple of interesting new characters, but I personally wasn't blown away by some of the plot reveals and the climax of the game wasn't handled as interestingly as BW's.

I was really hoping to see the player character from BW as well, since you can link the two up and get some extra scenes as flashbacks and people talk about your BW player, but it never happens.

HOWEVER- the actual gameplay for BW2 was really great and I had a lot of fun with it. I really liked the new areas introduced and we get another, completely new Victory Road. Two years pass between BW and BW2 and they considered carefully what had changed in that time, maybe more so than the 3 year timeskip between RBYFRLG!Kanto and GSCHGSS!Kanto.

Some of the new features were fun, too. Join Avenue was good, as was PokéWood and the PWT. I really enjoyed the Medal Rally as well, which are BW2's answer to achievements. The player characters and the new rival are cute, too!

TL;DR: BW2 is a great game for the gameplay, but the story was really weak. I'd recommend it anyway if you enjoyed BW, though.

Not really. It doesn't add much new stuff, I don't even remember what the story was, and Hugh is the fucking worst.

Going to be the voice of dissent, but yes! I actually do like the plot, one or two elements aside, I love some of the character development (Bianca and Iris especially), the expanded Unova is fantastic, and as the anon above said, the gameplay is AMAZING. Especially the post-game. Some features are no longer available, like Join Avenue, since they finished DS wifi, but the rest of the game is really solid.

I'm very much not entertained by the mega stuff and haven't even given it any use in my games and am very annoyed they seem to enjoy creating new megas more than new pokémon.

And the storyline was so underwhelming I don't even properly remember what it was about, other than there was some big guy........

Though I do like the 3D stuff, and pokémon ami is fun. Though going through lumiose city makes me feel sick and very disorientated. And I'm annoyed that the circle pad is roller skates by default and you can't change it.

I'm really curious as to what you want polished. Not outright disagreeing with you - I didn't hate Kalos, but it wasn't my favorite, either. What particular things do you want to improve on, and how?

I'm not super fond of it either; The routes seem shorter and easier to maneuver, and I rather enjoyed that feeling of struggling on your last pokemon while you look for the exit.

The story is also very...heavyhanded. I never cared much for Pokemon's plotlines and just thought of it as background for dungeon grinding, but this is really the first time it didn't seem cleverly integrated.

i like this gen because of the progress that was made concerning gameplay. the experience overhaul, the multi exp makeover, the 'do you want to use another one' when your repel runs out... now it's harder for me to play previous gens because it feels clunky.

[personal profile] diet_poison 2014-07-14 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely agreed with these things. (Especially the repel thing!)

Though didn't they take out the scaling-EXP-to-level thing they had in BW? I really liked that.

I've no idea what this secret is about. But I think this map looks a lot like France.

It's Pokemon X and Y - Kalos was more or less modeled after France!

I played Pokemon X, but before that hadn't touched the series since Red/Blue/Yellow, and some Silver. I have no idea how it compares to the other entries in the series, but I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. By 3D, do you mean the character models, or the actual 3DS? I never play in 3D, hurts my eyes, but I loved the 3D world. Especially in Lumiose City, that was awesome.

Anyway, I have no idea if these features were in the previous games, but I loved: Wondertrade, GTS, Pokemon Aime, and sort of designing my own character - hair, colors and clothes. I think I've heard people claim that the story wasn't as good as other games, but coming from the "old school" games, which didn't really have much of a story at all, I can't compare.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-13 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
The other games don't have much of a story either, so I don't know what those people are on about. It's always been "Beat 8 people with punny names, then some more dudes, catch all the pokemon, you have no dad, there's a professor named after a tree, then there's a villainous group of incredibly stupid adult babies with an ill-defined goal but kinda neat costumes and you beat up their rats. Oh shit look at this GIANT dinosaur bird guy!!"

Wonder Trade, Amie, and customisation are all new to gen 6 :) The GTS was introduced in... 5, I think? It might have been in 4, but was definitely in 5 (and the new GTS is a definite improvement on the gen 5 one!). Also, agreed on never playing with the 3D set on, but I have eye issues so I can't use it anyway, and I love the look of the game. Kalos FEELS like a place.

I still think Black and White had the best plot, but I looove XY's. And the characters. And a certain pairing from those characters. *looks askance at two oneshots and one-and-a-half novel-length fics*

The gameplay, graphics, and POKEMON AMIE made up for the megas and boring "Here we come to stop the game from happening!!" tagalong characters. The translation/localization were also waaaay better than in Gen 5, which was incomprehensible fansub realness at times (especially in BW). On the other hand, it had Binacle and Barbaracle, which might be my new least favorite pokemon of all time.

I wouldn't fault anyone for whatever Pokemon games they like best though. There's a lot of sentiment and nostalgia wrapped up in the franchise and as long as you're not trying to rain on anyone else's parade you should be able to have whatever opinions you have about a childrens' video game series.

:O I love Barbaracle!

I also have a new least favorite Pokemon that was introduced in Gen VI though! specifically, Ugly Lint Bunny Diggersby (who I also partly resent for being the ONLY non-legendary Ground-type in the entire gen SERIOUSLY GUYS what were you thinking??)

Aw, you're fine :) Gen 6 is my second-favourite generation (and if they do a Z version or whatever that fixes some of the minor issues I had with XY, like some characters being completely underused (DIANTHA), it'll probably overtake it), with gen 5 being my all-time favourite, but everyone has different views!

I personally loved the Megas, although the only one I used was Lucario, but I can see why not everyone was rapt in them.

I have no idea where I'm going with this but the short version is even if I don't share your views on XY, you're still completely entitled to them and I'm not about to attack you over them :)

Man, I almost feel the opposite, I dunno. Sixth gen wasn't my favorite but I loved it way more than fifth gen, it just felt so much more engaging to me! I just wasn't really thrilled about the story in gen five? I mean obviously I don't play pokemon games for the story, but I usually like them to be something going on in the background while I'm getting my gym badges or whatever. I was so annoyed every time N showed up, and how he like took over the elite four. I just wanna become champion without any nonsense!
I get not everyone feels this way so that's totally fine! I remember this part in XY, after the whole dramatic thing with Lysandre and catching the legendary in Geosange town or w/e, and afterwards Shauna's like "Ok, so now we can get back to our adventure!" all dismissively, that's actually me, 100%, let me get back to my adventure, I don't wanna get wrapped up in villains' big schemes, I just wanna catch pokemon and be the master

(Anonymous) 2014-07-14 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I thought Gen 5 was the weakest entry. The pokemon are forgettable (except Volcarona. My favorite), Team Plasma is lame, and N is boring. Gen 6 pulled me back in for some reason, I'm in love with it. I think it's the customization and Pokemon-Amie.

Anyway I'm not dismissing your secret, it's ok if you don't like it. I always kept quiet about my opinion of Gen 5 because of "omg genwunner." I didn't even play RBY, I'm a Hoennbabby, kthnx

I liked Pokemon X a lot, but in some ways I liked it more for what it promises for later games than by itself. It introduced a lot of fun stuff like Amie and customizing the player character and I think the game did a great job of making the switch from traditional gameplay to 3-D. That said, I thought the story was mostly just okay (though honestly I don't play Pokemon games for the story, I play them so I can make my cute monsters beat up other people's cute monsters), it was way too easy to end up with your team massively overleveled and the post-game kinda sucked. I wasn't all that into the Mega evolutions either, but maybe I'll like them better in the Ruby/Sapphire remakes when I might actually use a pokemon that has one, which I didn't in X. I'm hoping for Pokemon Z that takes all the weaknesses of XY and fixes them up a little. (Also, am I the only one who doesn't really have a least favorite gen? There are things I like and dislike about all of them, but I don't think I can really point to one and say 'Yeah, this one was the worst.')

Huh. I loved XY, but...well, like a lot of other people here, I didn't primarily love it for the story. Team Flare was pretty underwhelming (though I liked their outfits) and Lysandre was extremely transparent and kinda boring. I did like the bit with AZ, and I'm not going to lie, I cried at the end. But while I liked his character, nothing much else about the story was super engaging. (I miss the Gym Leaders being involved in the overall plot like Gen V, too.)

I LOVED the 3D graphics though and, unpopular opinion alert!, I also love Mega Evolution. (I will admit though that I was very skeptical of it when it was first revealed.)

I still hold that IV was the weakest generation, though I did like it. Just...not as much as any of the others. VI might be my second-least-favorite, but only because of how much I loved everything else, not out of any dislike for VI. It was still really enjoyable IMO. (Also, interestingly, many of what I'd call its biggest shortcomings were also present in other generations...)

Gen V master raaaaaaaaaaace!
