Re: Liking anti-heroes
As for types, I dig Casanova characters who hit on everything that moves and have all the confidence in the world even when they're turned down. Tamaki in Ouran, Wendy Oldbag and Klavier Gavin in Ace Attorney, Jack Harkness, and so on.
But Kida Masaomi pissed me off from beginning to end of the Durarara anime. The Casanova thing wasn't the only thing he was about of course, he had other douchebag qualities that involved being a worthless shit stirrer, but I could not find anything entertaining about his date hunting and constant sexual harassment. I'm supposed to feel sorry for him when he's being an obtuse little weirdo and bitching out a friend for assumedly getting another guy's dick wet AARAF;GHSFGH HATEAHATEHATE—

(Anonymous) 2014-07-15 02:44 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, that's what I thought too. His sexual harassment was limited to talk iirc and like you said, that's pretty much a staple of Casanova type characters. He didn't really do anything in that area that most other characters of that archtype don't do. So what makes him so bad in that area?
As for shitstirring, eh, I can't really remember the series, especially the latter half so I can't comment on that.
Re: Liking anti-heroes
I had a lot of trouble buying that he and Anri were even friends, since he came across as this creep she tolerates who won't let up on how fuckable she is (not that the show itself wouldn't get over her being tits mcgee. yes i know. anime.). Granted, I thought I would start liking Kida more when he was telling the gross teacher to get lost for creeping on her. But then he goes on to ask Mikado how erotic she is, and it's back to the annoying list.
And even outside of that, I couldn't fathom why I should care about a kid who starts a gang for no reason other than to fuck around, gets blindsided by the Littlefinger, ends up with a hurt girlfriend, bails on his gang for a year, then ends up reforming said gang, only more shittily, because he doesn't understand investigation or questions, and doesn't keep his gang in check because he's too busy moping down the street. There's a few moments where I like the friendship with Mikado, and how does want to look out for him and Anri, but he didn't accomplish much? He got manipulated (unintentionally?) into making a situation worse by fostering animosity everywhere? anime tteeeeens /blarghing
And I guess there's also the part where I can't quite pinpoint why he bothers me more than others who pull off similar actions and behaviour. He just bugs me idk.
More seriously though, I'm starting the light novels soon. I don't know how well the anime covered the first few books, but I suspect that having an ensemble cast means you crash through certain stories and plot points faster than you would having read them ("eg: wait what Namie is working for Izaya now?"). So my guess is that whatever I'm missing is probably there in the books since it might give me a different perspective on him. Or I could just read a bunch of meta.
Re: Liking anti-heroes
Oh I can definitely see the appeal of liking Casanova characters--self-confidence is attractive after all. There are some that doubled as the comedic-relief too though, like Francis in Hetalia. I think I prefer those types.
I don't watch Durarara, but manipulative characters whose mistakes got handwaved and the canon told to be sorry for can be really annoying, i agree.
Your liking Casanova-types reminds me though-- I think Tennoh Haruka would be in that category too, don't you think? I'm on the fence about her flirtiness though. I know Michiru never minded, but it sometimes bugged me that she's flirtatious in front of her own girlfriend.
Re: Liking anti-heroes
Kida isn't even manipulative. That's a different, and hilariously unapologetic, character with charisma. No, Kida is just this guy who causes a lot of collateral damage for reasons passed off as vengeance when it's more lack of communication and ego, and gets a free pass because I don't know why.
I could see how that'd be irksome with Haruka. I always got the impression that it was more for show and flustering girls, while in private she was more sweet and reserved with her actual girlfriend, like in the end Michiru was the one still had "claim". And I dig that kind of "infidelity with rules" kind of thing and get a bit giddy when it pops up in other things, like House of Cards for instance.
Re: Liking anti-heroes
Also for some reason, though I hate her flirting in front of her girlfriend, the scene that irked me the most was when she flirted with the room service girl behind her back.
I think the manga showed more balance in that department, Haruka's more touchy-feely there.
