I am so incredibly sick of the type of attitude you're expressing. I'm the same anon who recommended a book called "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" a week or two ago. You know who that was written by? A book about poor black America? A highly privileged white woman who drove all over the damn country trying to make sure Henrietta Lacks' story was told. You probably would have told her it was inappropriate to even try. Seriously, fuck that attitude.

I don't see any real indication that the creator is motivated by a burning desire for justice and recognition for the victims of these murders.

But I do agree with you in principle, and it's certainly that this is going to be respectful and good, it just seems really unlikely as things stand

I don't know, it seems fairly respectful from the author's description:

HoT is a fictional 2D adventure game inspired by a series of real disappearances along a stretch of remote highway in Canada. It draws its inspiration from – among others – the culture of the Haida people, Kentucky Route Zero, Detective Grimoire, Fargo and True Detective.

You play as Sofia, a documentary maker, and together with cameraman Caleb you travel to the town of Augier’s Peak, up in the wilderness of rural Canada, to find out what the hell is going on over there. Three girls have gone missing there recently, and you will have to interview people, investigate locations and unravel secrets that could eventually lead to an explanation for this mystery, and an understanding of the cultural significance these events have on the people in that region.

What's fascinating to me is how people are all up in arms about something that just has the possibility of being disrespectful. It hasn't even happened yet. But because a (dun dun DUN) white male is daring to touch the subject matter? Well, gosh, it must be horrid.

That's not the same thing as making a video game based on real and current murders, WTF. It doesn't even try to tell the real story or be about the real people. This is not an attempt to get the truth out there or to educate people.

This game is more like if Henrietta Lacks had been murdered last year and some guy makes a point and click out of it for kicks. Also her name will be Jenny Smithson because it's just a game based on her murder and the murders of people like her and there are detective puzzles and shit. You think that's bad? My god chill out, it's totes appropriate... right? Right?

The point of OP's post was that it was a white male telling the story. I guarantee you the post would not even have been generated if it was someone "cooler" doing the exact same thing.

Thank you for this post.

You are not getting the point. Even after multiple people have noted what the actual problem is.

People have been murdered in the very recent past, the killer is still at large, and someone has made a game about it. That is NOT the same thing as traveling all over the country to make sure someone's story is told. If you can't see how the two are different, then fuck you.

DA I don't even think that's really the big problem with it. It's practically a cold case by this point as the RCMP don't have any leads. I think there was one before, but the guy was dead. Sure, it can be considered disrespectful, but unfortunately our culture does this on a weekly basis in the form of tv series and sometimes the news itself. I think the bigger issue is that the developer doesn't seem to really care about the victims and their families. I saw nowhere that he'd talked to the families and got their permission. Nowhere that shown that he knew anything about the area or crimes outside of what a single news article would've told him. He's just trying to get some eyes on his game by saying it's about a controversial subject. From the looks of it, the game could've been about any detective murder case in anywhere land.

No, you don't get the point. The point is not just outrage that it's about recent events, it's the outrage that a white male is exploring/writing/creating content about the recent events. If you want to argue about video games as a storytelling medium, fine. But it's bullshit to say that someone who is the wrong color or sex can't tell the story.

SA adding to my comment above:

Also, "if you can't tell how the two are different, then fuck you"? Really? Your mental reasoning skills are so miniscule that you can't make your point without resorting to insult? And you're such a unique snowflake that you're obviously miles above someone who dares hold a different opinion? Get over yourself, buttercup.
