Japan cracking down on anime/manga pirating

The list is huge, with pretty much all manga providers being targeted for shutdown. Needless to say, people who use them are not happy at the moment. I think it's perfectly understandable-they want to make money of of their products.

What exactly are they going to be able to do to foreign nationals, though, aside from threaten them?

They're grouped with a lot of American distributors, so unsure. They apparently are fairly confident they can get those sites taken down.

I stopped reading anime/watching manga aside from rare exceptions years ago so I don't really care, but I can't think of an instance when this has ever actually worked, as opposed to merely making pirates change their sites/sharing formats.

Why not just let it go?

Not much, especially since a lot of those sites don't actually host the content themselves.

Aren't they only cracking down in China? Good luck with that. They should make a Crunchyroll China or something.

Nope, they're going after about 500 sites, here's part of a list:

They're going after Nyaa?

Well, I always did want to dedicate myself to life as a freedom fighter, just needed a suitable cause.

Damn. I'm not surprised that the few sites I do frequent are on this list.

Well. That list is certainly... ambitious.

Tagentially related, but here's a chart of anime/manga piracy rates between Japan and the US: http://i.imgur.com/ahonCyq.png

(Top half of the boxes are hardcore fans and bottom are casual fans, btw. Also note that manga and anime piracy is about the same for the US between anime and manga, despite pretty much all anime released for the past few years being legally available, where as manga is much less so.)

Also good luck on shutting down the pirate bay and nyaa.

Re: Japan cracking down on anime/manga pirating

(Anonymous) 2014-08-01 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Well of course more people are going to be pirating stuff outside of Japan when a lot of things aren't legally available outside of Japan. Did that not occur to them?

Re: Japan cracking down on anime/manga pirating

(Anonymous) 2014-08-01 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
The only reason I bought quite a few of the manga I own (both the translations when they finally, finally existed and the fucking expensive Japanese originals imports) was because I was able to pre-read them for free online. If that option doesn't exist anymore, I doubt I will buy any of the originals anymore.

Re: Japan cracking down on anime/manga pirating

(Anonymous) 2014-08-01 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of people who pirate never intended to buy it anyway, but what about those of us who would never know those series existed if not for those sites, who read the chapters as they post there so we can keep current and buy them as they become available in our country? Where do they think the foreign demand that gets licenses bought generates from, thin air?

Because most of the anime and manga I've been introduced to, and bought later, I found on those sites. And if not for them I'd probably have lost interest in a bunch of the ones I did follow because it takes so damn long for them to be available to me here.

I think they tried this before a few years ago, focusing on manga, and it didn't really do anything. No big for me, I get almost all my anime through official channels, but my feelings about piracy are the same: Making the product more affordable and accessible hurts piracy far more than bullying tactics ever will. Might not be fair, but I think it's true.

Re: Japan cracking down on anime/manga pirating

(Anonymous) 2014-08-01 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
This. There are a lot of series I would happily legally support - if they were licensed in the US. But they aren't, so it's not like I have a choice. It's piracy or nothing if I want to read/watch them.

Re: Japan cracking down on anime/manga pirating

+1

I support the anime/manga industry as much as I can both watching anime legally and buying manga, but I would do more if I could.
Sadly I'm not in a country where stuff gets licensed, shipping expenses are too expensive and there are very few anime available to watch online legally (Crunchyroll is the only option and most old tittles are regionally locked).

IMO world wide digital distribution rights need to be a thing ASAP.

I know it's not easy since different countries, different (distribution and content) laws, but just like Hollywood is willing to lobby so USA politicians pressure other countries into making harsher anti-online-piracy laws, they could as well do something like changing laws about distribution (or making some new ones exclusively about online distribution) so any media producer can have an easier time doing their business.

If after that they decide to do anything against illegal sharing sites, it'll be more effective since there'll be less motivation to search for new ways to keep sharing like that and the people willing and able to pay will do so, so the industry will really benefit.

But this?
Any site that they manage to take down will be like hydra and another two more will appear to replace it. And private torrent trackers are still a thing. As well as other options...

I wonder how well that will actually work.
Is there some kind of official site on line where you could pay some kind of monthly fee read be able to read pretty much any manga ever? Translated into all the languages? If it wasn't ridiculously expensive I would be all over that. One for American comics too.

crunchyroll's working on online scans, but manga's a much larger industry than anime that I'm not sure it's possible.

And here's an article about the lesser known legal manga sites (but they probably don't have stuff you're interested in, so): http://mangabookshelf.com/44556/the-legal-manga-reading-sites-you-dont-know-about/

What I wish is that there were more sites that had a payment system like Amazon Instant Video, where you pay per episode/season that you download. I much prefer that to subscription sites because I don't really watch/read enough to be able to justify paying a monthly fee for something, but I'm happy to pay for a particular series.

That's the main reason I don't have a Crunchyroll account. I don't want to have to be worrying about a monthly payment; I just want to pay for the things I download.

Eh, I doubt much will change, honestly. Torrent-wise, good luck taking down Nyaa and Pirate Bay. As for manga, the biggest sites like Mangareader won't give a shit and will keep happily posting stuff. The only scanlation site that'll probably take anything at all down is Batoto and they don't usually list as much popular licensed stuff anyway, at least not in English.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-01 10:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they tried this before and all the manga reader sites (like mangafox etc) did was take down the things that were licensed in the US and now they sometimes don't even do that anymore.
