Fuck this shit, there's nothing wrong with straight-shipping a homosexual character. It's just shipping.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-01 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

If people can write fic of characters raping and eating each other then I don't see the problem with just shipping a gay character and a straight character. I say this as a lesbian who used to ship Kurt/Rachel pretty hard (they had chemistry dammmit! haven't seen the show in a long time though)

[personal profile] gondremark 2014-08-01 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
yup.
Shipping's just shipping. As long as you're not running around trying to insist your ship is canon, we're all happy. So go forth, OP, and find all the fic!

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yes there is. Shipping a canon gay character with a character of the opposite sex is erasure and really really fucking shitty. There are barely any canon gay/queer characters and they should NEVER be shipped with the opposite sex. Until straight characters don't make up 99% of all characters out there, the queer ones are to remain queer in both canon and fanon.

It's not "just shipping", it's not harmless. It reinforces a culture that aggressively and consistently tries to erase non-straight sexuality.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
fucking thank you. everyone going 'it's harmless~' aren't thinking about the larger sociological implications.

lol come on, people write fanfic of all sorts of weird-ass shit. Someone writing a fic about two characters they find compatible (regardless of their actual sexual orientation) doesn't mean they're erasing actual gay people just like people who break up canon het couples to ship slash couples aren't actually trying to erase women. It's fandom, lighten the fuck up.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
It's not erasing anything. The characters will still be there, being gay, in the canon.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 03:28 am (UTC)(link)

I don't care a jot for gay representation when the gay creator/showrunner pulls this stuff and in turn elicits nary a ripple from gay viewers. I'll happily admit that I slash for the fetish factor, not some grand human rights thing.

Honestly curious: do you ship straight pairings for "the fetish factor" or do you look at gay ships differently? I'm just kind of cringing at the word "fetish" applied here but I'm wondering if you use it equally at least.

Have you actually stopped and tried to work out how exactly you're "contributing to lesbian erasure"? It'd be one thing if you were attempting to assert that she canonically isn't a lesbian, or silence/eclipse other people's attempts at representing her as lesbian, but do you really think that's the same thing as plain old shipping it?
gondremark: (Default)

[personal profile] gondremark 2014-08-01 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
This. It's impossible to contribute to erasure when you're absolutely silent about your ship.

Didn't bug me either, and since when does sleeping with one person turn you straight/gay for life. Especially since both were using each other in a mutual manner with these two.

I don't ship it, but god damn if I didn't like them fucking :U they are cute and the only thing I got put off by was the Alanna/hannibal interspersed. I'll read will/Margot once I bother to look at the fanfic side again.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-01 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
OP, I think you're taking shipping a little too seriously.

The character in question is just that- a fictional character. And sexuality can be fluid. I get why so many fans were pissed and Fuller's response to the criticism was totally gross & made me lose some respect for him, but you're not hurting anyone by shipping this.

I don't actually watch the show, but this is my policy for shipping. You shipping it isn't going to change canon or change her sexuality. You do you. Enjoy yourself. Fandom can be problematic, but it IS supposed to be a fun escape.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-01 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
And sexuality can be fluid.

For gay TV characters. Straight characters, though? Forget about it.

Yet it's such a coincidence how the sexuality is always "fluid" in just one direction.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know it's silly, but my area of fandom got really steamed about it and I've seen a fair bit of wank over people liking the scene, so that's where I'm coming from. Normally IDGAF about ~erasure through shipping~ because I know reading fanfic doesn't affect the real world, but. :/

I was super pissed about what happened in the show, but man, ship it and love it. No reason to feel guilty about that, IMHO.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
OP, you have zero reason to worry about contributing to lesbian erasure. Ship what you want to ship. The people who are at fault for lesbian erasure are, above all, the WRITERS.

(I heard that a bunch of them wanted to just make Margot straight and ignore the fact that she was a lesbian, and then Fuller said no. IDK how true that is, but it sounds pretty typical :/

And I may not ship it, personally, but I can see how someone would. I won't admit this on tumblr, but I actually thought the scene with them together was rather... sweet, in a sad kind of way. Like when they're comparing their scars. They're just two totally broken people. And at this point, that's the kindest interaction Margot has had with any of the other characters so far.

So yeah, I don't ship it romantically, but I am totally down with them being BFFs and hunting serial killers together.

(I also think it would be super interesting she was paired with Bedelia...)

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
+1

I'd prefer it if it hadn't happened because of the real life implications (as well as the fact that the subplot went nowhere really, and Margot lost even more agency after what Mason did to her), but the way it happened in context didn't really bother me. I just found it incredibly sad. Two sad, lonely people using each other.

I was more bothered by Fuller's reaction to the criticism, to be honest.

I understand your point, but if you could do a whoooole lot worse than shipping a lesbian character with a guy. Maybe give yourself a break? You're not writing for the show (I assume) and your ship really, really isn't going to hurt anyone.
