Sad but true: One can be a good fan without being a good proofreader.

(But I too am sometimes annoyed by typos in proper names, OP. I can see a spell checker not twigging one to homonym-type errors - where/wear/were - but proper names usually do show up on a spellcheck.)

Steve Rodgers. :< I can't even read fics that write it like that.

"Rivendale" I can kind of understand because sometimes things just slip through the cracks. "Gandolf" though...wow.

Also, I just want to say that I really like the way your secret was constructed. It's very cute!

I don't think it's necessarily a book vs. movie thing, OP. Some people just have weird spelling blind spots, where no matter what they do they just can't remember the right spelling of some words. I'm like that with seperate separate.

I was coming here to say something similar. There are some words/names that, for some reason, I can never get right on the first try. Doesn't matter how many times I see them or how many times I write them.

That said, this kind of demonstrates the necessity of proof-reading and having a beta.

I've seen this happen in fandoms where there is no movie/TV adaptation and the only way to learn a name is to read it. It always baffles me, because you've clearly read the book/comic/non-voice acted video game dialogue/fandom wiki, so how do you consistently misspell fairly simple names?

It's a bit easier to understand when the name in question is something fairly complicated, but with the more straightforward names it's just odd.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I have consistently misspelled more than one beloved book character. I misspelled the protagonists name in a school essay, and the teacher was confused because the essay was otherwise very thoughtful and accused me of plagiarism. My favorite book I read over and over but still need to check how it's spelled every time. I have no other spelling issues, some people just are bad with names.
Knowing myself, I triple-check every time I mention a fandom character, especially in fic, but I have been 100% confident in spellings that turned out to be wrong.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't care for how long someone's been in fandom, but spelling characters' names wrong is a huge no-go in fic, since it's so ridiculously easy to look up. It'd take 3 seconds on Google to find out it's spelled "Gandalf". (I only have a passing familiarity with this fandom, and *I* know it's "Gandalf").

Like ... you obviously care about these characters and want to write about them, but you don't care about spelling their names right?

I can never get Daenerys Targaryen's name right on the first try, but I take the time to freaking look it up.

Also "Damien Wayne".

That background pic is cute.

Great pic choice

Isn't that from a Dutch edition of The Hobbit? It's awesome and you're awesome for choosing it.

I don't get how people can so badly misspell character names, either. I know a lot of people are hopeless at spelling, but... that's why we have spellcheck and the ability to LOOK THINGS UP. It's weird when people act like if someone bad at spelling there's nothing they can do about it and we shouldn't be so hard on them by expecting them to spell properly. That sounds kind of condescending, to be honest.

OP

I kind of agree; it takes me out of the fic if the names aren't right. Everyone makes mistakes so if it happens once I just ignore it, but otherwise I find it distracting. (And won't continue reading.)

That said, I understand spelling things wrong (I googled Stiles' last name for a week after getting into fandom. Wanted to make sure I was typing it correctly), but it IS easy to google the characters name if you aren't sure. I still do this for certain characters.

On the one hand, a lot of the people I know who have been fans of The Hobbit since childhood had it read to them by their parents and experienced it that way.

On the other hand it takes like five seconds to google this shit. So. Yeah that would really bug me.

This is a pet peeve of mine, too. Any time I comment on characters and every time I post fic, I doublecheck to make sure all the names are right before hitting Post. You can love a character without memorizing the spelling of their last name but you can easily spell check before posting, too.

Angle and Spirk would agree with you.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, there's no excuse for that. If it happens more than once so it's reasonable to assume it isn't a typo, I will backbutton. Any fic writer should check spelling beforehand, but with a book fandom it's unforgivable- seriously, IT'S RIGHT ON THE PAGE IN FRONT OF YOU.

Maybe they've been fans since childhood

because they're still in their childhood.

I remember seeing the Rivendale one a lot back when the LotR movies were still new and I was diving into fic. It always made me think of Riverdale but I still refrained from searching for LotR/Archie crossovers.

I don't have anything useful to say on the proofreading issue. I'm for proofreading, but I can't get too worked up about it.

I'm here for that ADORABLE cover art. <3

I love how this secret looks.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe they're using their childhood spelling? My mother still has a story I wrote at age six about "Billbo".

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Very cute graphic!

Also, I agree.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen Erabor and Erid Luin instead of Erebor and Ered Luin pop up a fair bit recently. Erabor I get because "Erebor" does sound a bit like that, but I'm pretty sure Ered Luin isn't mentioned in the films by that name, so they must have seen the name written down.

I can't see 'Gandolf' as anything other than a combination of Gandalf and Ganondorf and that is terrifying.

True story - I have accidentally used the name 'Ganondalf' in BOTH sets of media. And Zelda is my favourite video game series and Lord of the Rings is my favourite book.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
I listened to audiobooks a lot as a kid, so I can see where someone might be a fan of something without having read it. There's also the animated movie, which I haven't seen, and I'm not sure how many people would watch that and not bother with the books. You'd think they'd just Google it, but a lot of people don't bother checking on spelling for names when they think they're sure, especially in casual writing.
