Re: Guardians of the Galaxy

I really liked it! Guardians of the Galaxy was the only MCU movie where I was almost completely unfamiliar with the source material so I don't know how well it adapted the comics but I thought it was a pretty fun film. Not gonna lie, I wasn't expecting to get choked up during the film but I totally got teary eyed during a couple of scenes.

Also, I think Rocket is probably Bradley Cooper's best role to date.

The comics ran years ago and were really terrible. This movie is basically "let's try that again."

I'm mostly into it for Rocky -- he's originally a Keith Giffen character and that's pretty much an easy way to catch my interest.

Captain America aside, that seems to be Marvel's theme this year with this + BH6.

Ah, then I guess I didn't miss out on much then at least.

I went into it expecting to like Rocket best. But I ended up liking Gamora, Groot, and Ronan best.

Drax and Rocket were the biggest surprises for me. I seriously loved the whole team but I wasn't expecting to like those two so much.

I loved both characters but I was most impressed by Drax since his actor, a pro wrestler, really didn't have any formal acting experience (and we all know that the transition from wrestler to actor has...varying results). I thought he did a pretty good job though and some of his scenes were genuinely moving. You can tell that he really put an effort into doing the role as well as he possibly could (Bautista said in an interview a while back that he wanted the role more than anything and that he even cried when he got it. Awwww)

da

Yeah, I was really surprised when it was announced that Marvel was going to adapt Guardians of the Galaxy of all things considering that the comics where wholly unremarkable and had little name recognition even among people who enjoy Marvel titles, much less the general population. It seemed like a recipe for disaster...but the movie still turned out to be awesome. I'm impressed, Marvel!

...huh. That is a weird take, from my perspective. I remember the (recent) comic as a beloved fan favorite, BECAUSE it had the same tone that the movie captures nicely.

I suspect some folks might be conflating it with the 1980s-90s Guardians of the Galaxy, which indeed mostly just sucked.

Yep. Uninformed people who don't know what they are talking about, saying things that are totally misleading to innocent bystanders... Typical.

You are a joy disease.

Did you actually read the comic? It sounds as if you are referring either to version 1 (from the 1990s) or version 3 (2013 onwards, rebooted to ride the coattails of the movie).

The popularity of the Guardians of the Galaxy title dates back to the Abnett & Lanning version, circa 2008. They wrote several Marvel books around that time, commonly referred to as the Realm of Kings and Annihilation War or the Marvel Cosmic universe since there were crossovers all over the place and it involved space-based comics: it was more like a giant, sprawling braided novel and individual comics and it took place chronologically speaking about the same time as the Civil War. It is more or less universally agreed to be the very best type of pulp comics ever published by Marvel. As opposed to the graphic novel type comics like V for Vendetta or Watchmen (neither of which was published by Marvel, BTW).

Instead of misleading innocent people who don't know the comics, go and find the whole story arc, read, then come back to thank us: I'll be right here, waiting.

I was talking about the original run, but I'll thank you to not condescend to me like every fucking stereotype of a comic book nerd the world's ever heard. How many CBR accounts have you been banned from?
