Groot actually means big in Dutch. Every time I see someone using his catchphrase they sound like a kid that is insisting they are an adult to me.

Yes! I've seen it twice now. Loved it. I'd say it is now up there with my favorite MCU movies. Probably either in 2nd or 3rd place. I'm really wanting fics, though, and I'm sad there aren't any yet. I can't even find comic fics for what I'm looking for (Gamora, Nebula, Thanos, and/or Ronan-centric fics).

It wasn't as funny as I had been led to believe, but there was a lot of heart and goodwill to it that I loved.
I'm no Marvel aficionado, so I can't compare it to everything else in Phase 2 except IM 3.

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy

This one stands on it's own, I think. Like, I loved winter soldier, but you needed a lot of the momentum from Cap 1 and Avengers for that movie to work. This one? It wouldn't have been made without all those others, but now that it's made it works entirely separate.

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I really liked it! Guardians of the Galaxy was the only MCU movie where I was almost completely unfamiliar with the source material so I don't know how well it adapted the comics but I thought it was a pretty fun film. Not gonna lie, I wasn't expecting to get choked up during the film but I totally got teary eyed during a couple of scenes.

Also, I think Rocket is probably Bradley Cooper's best role to date.

The comics ran years ago and were really terrible. This movie is basically "let's try that again."

I'm mostly into it for Rocky -- he's originally a Keith Giffen character and that's pretty much an easy way to catch my interest.

I loved that crazy mess. First time I emotionally connected with a Bradley Cooper character. Loved the soundtrack, thought the comedy was the perfect amount. I've been wanting a crazy ass space movie for so long and I'm just so glad they delivered. I also appreciated that they didn't feel the need to end it with ROMANCE. I'm digging Marvel not shoving a love-story into all their movies anymore.

I really liked it. It was good fun and Rocket was my favourite, which I'm not surprised by tbh. The one thing that did disappoint me was the after credits scene, really pointless and not worth sticking about for(I was kind of hoping for maybe an AoU teaser since we got an Avengers one at the end of the first Cap film, but we didn't. Oh well).

I don't think it's my favourite of the Phase 2 movies atm, but I easily enjoyed it as much as TDW and IM3(Cap 2 being the runaway fave for me so far).

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-08-02 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like I need to see it again before saying how much I like it compared to the other Marvel movies (Though right now, not as much as WS and more than TDW), but I enjoyed it. A lot. It was very earnest and cute and fun in a way none of the other movies have been, and I hope the next one keeps that feeling.

Imo it was hilarious while still not being as funny as I was led to believe. Which isn't a big slam because I laughed many times, hard. (“Who put the sticks up their ass?” “Are you happy now? We're a bunch of assholes standing in a circle.” Then Drax's friendship speech, Groot's face after THAT scene, and Peter singing.)

Unsurprisingly, Rocket and Groot were my favorites. (I want my very own Groot, he's the best. I can't believe how much emotion Diesel put into three words. The animation was impressive as well! And Rocket... Was just beautiful. I loved that scene in the bar and the entire ending; Cooper was phenomenal.) I would read a million fics detailing their past adventures because they have the best relationship. I knew it was going to be good, but Holy crap... They were so heartwarming. I cried. Ugh. Also... Yea, I ship them, I ship them hard. Give me fanart of them cuddling, fandom!

Peter was adorable though (I now have a thing for Chris Pratt, ugh) and so was Gamora, and Drax was unexpectedly awesome. He had some damn funny lines and I like how much he changes over the course of the film. I want more of everyone being great bros and doing heroic shit together. Right now I want it more than any other Marvel film, sans Cap 3.

Oh, and I'm glad Nebula survived. Karen was stunning in that makeup, and I want to see her and Gamora face off again.

I absolutely loved it. (I'm going to be seeing it again in a couple hours, actually!) This was the Marvel movie I've been waiting for, especially after being so incredibly disappointed by 'Winter Soldier'. Everyone was so awesome, though I wish Nebula got a little more development.

Also, I, uh... ship Rocket and Groot pretty hard now (I did before, but after the movie even moreso), ehehe. Anyone have any fic or fan art recs (I know, too soon, but it never hurts to ask)? >_>

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy

I really enjoyed it. Probably in my top three or five when it comes to Marvel films. I went in knowing I was going to love Rocket, but came out with Groot as my favorite. I love characters that can do a lot by not using a lot of words yet are able to emotionally connect with me. I thought Groot was so perfectly done by all involved, the animators, the writers, and Vin Diesel's voicework (and he basically said the same words over and over). I wasn't too sure about the rest of the Guardians. I thought I was going to find Star-lord annoying, but Chris Pratt did a great job (though it was kind of distracting when he sounded a bit like Emmet from The Lego Movie, but not in an annoying way). I was worried that Gamora was going to be nothing more than Quill's love interest, but she was too clever to fall for that. I hope they don't become involved in future projects. I would hate that. Drax surprised me a lot. I thought he was going to be the throwaway character I wouldn't care for, but I really loved his delivery and character arc.

The only thing that I was disappointed with was the bad guy. I loved the character design of Ronan, and I thought Lee Pace did well with what was given to him, but Ronan's plans and arc was more or less the same as the bad guy from Thor: The Dark World. =( Marvel needs to step it up with their villains.
Wait, there was another second disappointment: End credits scene. =( I feel like Marvel wants to show us as little as possible because they don't want to reveal to WB/DC too much of what they have. Batman v Superman is a pretty heavy contender now, I assume.

But overall, I really liked this film. I'd go watch it again.

It was so much fun. I haven't had that much fun from a movie in...I don't remember. Even The Avengers wasn't as much fun. And I LOVE that movie. It reminded me of all 80's sci-fi movies I used to love as a kid like The Last Starfighter. And on a shallow note, man, those are some beautiful starships. I am getting tired of the gunmetal or the black/white industrial look of modern starships in movies and shows. The ones in this movie were pretty. Like I want to pilot one.

Groot making me tear up with some Iron Giant realness, and his and Rocket's relationship was fantastic. Rocket was amazing! And Starlord was amazingly cute and oddly affecting as well. Drax I liked more than I expected, and Gamora as well!

I also really liked the design of the whole movie. Great mix of aliens including a lot of old-school technicolor 'no they're not humans at all I swear', variety of factions and planets making the universe seem actually big, the ship designs were varied and cool. What a great big fun SPACE movie. A+ would watch again!

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
it was such a fun film! and you could tell the rest of the audience was enjoying it, too.

the only disappointments were:
1) the villians. boring and not even a little intimidating. why are they smashing shit? who knows.

2) the end credits scene. i feel like marvel has rick-rolled me. well-played, but i would have preferred a preview for Avengers 2.

but other than that... all the main characters were likeable, heartwarming and funny. and the animation/visuals were gorgeous at times. i haven't had such fun since I saw the Avengers.

Question?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-04 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I am a long-time fan of the Guardians of the Galaxy (well, everything written by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning in the Cosmic Marvel universe, really), and I do want to see the movie, but the only reason I have not seen it yet is that it seems as if it sets up some romantic tension, if not a full-blown romance, between Gamora and Peter?

Can you confirm or deny? Please? Pretty please?

Call me stupid but the fact that in the comics there was no UST whatsoever between the two of them was one of my very favorite parts. I liked the fact that Star-Lord was a major character but not really paired with anyone for the duration. As if a character could be interesting even if too tired and cynical to actually flirt with everyone he comes across and not defined by who he is in a relationship with. Can you tell I've been traumatized by Star Trek reboot's Uhura/Spock pairing? Yes, I am bitter, why do you ask?

Well, maybe he could have been romantically paired with Nova, but if so, that was really very sub-textual and not in your face at all, they seemed more like BFFs to me? Or Mantis, very faintly and if you lean over backwards and really squint, but she's not in the movie either, right?

As opposed to the Moondragon/Phyla-Vell relationship which was central to the whole story arc and handled rather well, I thought. I can understand, if not approve, THAT not making it to the big screen, but I don't want a completely artificial heterosexual romance instead, it's just irksome and insulting.

Oh and as you can probably tell, the 2013 revival of the title is something I simply ignore. Lalala, can't hear you! :)
