How do you prefer your smut?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-06 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Do you prefer there to be a lot of lead-up, or do you want to just get to the juicy bits?

Is it important to you that it makes sense in terms of characterization, or is it okay if some things are hand-waved?

Sometimes I crave PWP, sometimes I want a complicated story of which smut is just one part. But characterization is really critical, it's like 90% of my enjoyment of smut, so the minute that ship sails is the minute I lose interest. Even in original work, if the personalities established in the story up until that point just evaporate in favor of generic sexing, then I don't care. Sex, for me, is just another way to tell me things about the characters, not just for its own sake.

I am almost exclusively interested in the lead-up and often skip the juicy bits.

Well, it's complicated, isn't it? I want to get right to the juicy bits, but for some things, the lead-up is part of the juicy bits for me, where the tension and the feeling matters a lot to why I find it hot. Similarly, characterization is hit or miss - sometimes it'll bother me so much I can't keep reading, sometimes I just don't give a shit. I think the important thing is to not turn the characters into people from a romantic comedy. As long as you keep some piece of their central characteristics from canon in there, I can deal with it.

Pretty much this. I like the juicy bits, but how much I like those bits is kind of dependent on what comes before them. If there isn't a nice lead-up then it just isn't as satisfying. Smut with absolutely no story or lead-in is not as interesting to me.

Both, it just depends on my mood. Characterization can be hand-waved if it is a short, PWP. But I want them in character for longer stuff.

Lead-up, plot, and characterization are all important to me; I almost never read PWPs unless I know the author or it's been recommended. The actual sex is less important to me than, say, who put the moves on whom and how quickly everyone is with the sex program. The sexual trauma victim is probably not going to be coming on hard to the awkward underage virgin, for example.

The slow build up, emotions, characterization.... they give in... and then fade to black.

Well, it might as well be fade to black because I always skip those scenes anyway.

If I'm reading specifically for smut, I prefer it to be in character (no cheesy robotic sex talk) but I don't prefer a lot of lead up. The general premise has to make sense to me and provided it does, you know, get on with the spanking or whatever I'm reading it for.

I usually read NC-17 longfics but I almost invariably skim or skip the sex scenes in them. Those are all for the romantic build up.
