COOOOOOOOOOONFLICT

(Anonymous) 2014-08-16 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Does anyone else think the obsession TV shows have with shoehorning every possible type of conflict into every possible relationship because TV is apparently boring without pointless conflict in every other episode is total bullshit?

Just wondering.

Yeeeees. I've started watching Switched At Birth, and I'm already expecting it to turn into this. Not sure if it's worth continuing, to be honest.

NA

Switched at Birth is absolutely HORRIBLE about this. Every single fucking conflict between people that could happens happens in that show. I finally gave up around the beginning of season 2 because I started to hate Daphne and the horrible choices she was making. And from what I hear she's only gotten worse. Bay was supposed to be the troublemaker but she's actually turned out to be pretty good while Daphne who seemed like the "good child" shoes is really really not.

Yep. I rarely ever watch tv series because I know that eventually they'll forego writing integrity for some bullshit conflict.

Well, I DO think TV is pretty boring g without conflict, but I do think shows like Castle have gone entirely overboard with manufactured obstacles.

There's conflict, which can come in almost any form and be about almost anything, and then there's "characters bickering about trivial issues", which is boring in the extreme and unpleasant to watch.

"Two detectives disagree about how to catch a serial killer" is an interesting conflict. "Alice is mad because Fred left the toilet seat up" is the type of thing I never need to see again, ever.

Yes. Apparently Japanese fiction doesn't do this? But I have never read any, so that may not be true (no manga recs, please, not my thing). I remember reading a Wiki page about this one Japanese book that takes this to the max, but I never did source a copy (in English) for it.

here's a good article on it. It's because Western fiction is based on the three act structure, and Japanese and Chinese fiction is more likely to be based on kishōtenketsu.

If you get into Asian movies you'll start to see it.

Really hate this, as the shows frequently have no sense of balance about it. Relationships, whether friendly, familial, or romantic, can have ongoing conflicts without each one being the DOOM PORTENT OF DESTRUCTION STAY TUNED FOR IF EVERYTHING GOES TO HELL. They imagine there's a tension there that really isn't if nobody's gonna die because Jesse and Samantha are having a tiff.

Yes, yes, yes. I don't enjoy watching characters bicker. Turning the characters against each other is lazy writing; it means the writers couldn't come up with an actual storyline for that episode.

I want to see characters confronting problems/issues/challenges that are external to themselves, not fighting amongst themselves. I like things that are plot-driven. I like to see teamwork.

Characters arguing is not a story. Period. That is the laziest type of plotting you can get. It's a sign that the show in question has run out of creative steam.
