It looks like a bad make-up job.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-25 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I bet people will start loving Moffat once a new showrunner shows up. The new guy will be worse than Hitler and everybody will miss Moffat. It's the cycle of fandumb.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-25 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
This is true.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-25 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Especially if the showrunner turns out to be Gaitiss or Chibinall.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-25 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Showrunners come and go but Who endures, yo. I don't think either of them is particularly good at the role (i do like Moffats episodes he wrote) but I can ride out the waves.

I do like Moffats series better for rewatching--they seem more optimistic at the core than RTDs seasons and for me personally that makes up for a great deal of silliness.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-25 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that might be why I prefer Moffat's run.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-25 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. The show could get just depressing during RTD's run. And while stuff during Moffat's run may not always make a lot of sense, I still prefer it overall.

While I myself vastly prefer RTD (and loved him since Century Falls, how's that for blast from the past), it's sort of human nature to glorify things in the past and look at them with Nostalgia goggles. Also RTD writes less nowadays, so there's also that.

So wait, he's leaving? I know someone's leaving but I've been trying to avoid all DW news until I get my television installed and my internet stops acting up.

Neither were all that good compared to some of the old showrunners, but neither are as bad as they're made out to be. My favourite stuff was actually Moffat writing under RTD. I've really enjoyed it all on rewatch (except Sparkly Jesus Doctor and the pavement lady) much more since adopting the MST3K Mantra and having a drink or two when I watch it.

I kinda agree with you. I am so angry what he did with Torchwood.

I love Gwen don't get me wrong. But the fact RTD killed almost everyone in that show except for the main two for the sake of showing "everyone dies at at Torchwood" totally didnt make sense. NOt to mention the way he made Rose the center of the universe in a way.

Whenever someone says a writer's shitty, I wish they would also cite a writer they think is good, so I could compare the two writers' work, and understand what they mean by 'shitty'...

RTD couldn't write a plot, let alone a sci-fi plot to save his life. HOWEVER, he was better at writing characters than Moffat.

I just wish Doctor Who would switch over to the hands of someone who is a hardcore sci-fi fan and would like to see the Doctor in a sci-fi show. Rather than the fake sci-fi turn fantasy show it has become.

I wouldn't find RTD's stuff better than Moffat's except that RTD's had less plot holes and made greater sense.

Moffat's is just a blob of LOOK HOW COOL THIS IS!!

(Anonymous) 2014-08-26 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Whenever people claim that Doctor Who wasn't sexist under RTD, I think of what happened to Harriet Jones and laugh bitterly.

I disagree. "Midnight" and "Waters of Mars" are better than anything Moffat has written.

This. They both had their ups and downs.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-26 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
I think that a lot of what came out during RTD's run was very, very cheesy, and some of it was definitely very poorly written. However, I tend to prefer his era because of the overall tone. A lot of it wasn't necessarily trying to be super epic or super clever; it just felt fun. Moffat's era has worn on me because it's started to seem as if every episode is being written like the beginning to some summer blockbuster. It's too !!!!!IMPORTANT!!!!! for me.

Also, I really, really disliked season 6. It was so focused on torturing Amy and Rory that it just left a bad taste in my mouth.

Well Moffat just won an Emmy

(Anonymous) 2014-08-26 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
So his ego will be insufferable now.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-26 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
I think writing wise they are about the same but I think RTD was a better showrunner and he left close to when he needed to leave. Moffat needs to be gone by now but his ego won't let go.

I also do think Moffat is a lot more sexist, RTD was not perfect in that regard but Moffat just likes to hit you over the head with it repeatedly and it's gotten beyond annoying.

Agree with this 100%. Both of them are equally good and equally bad and equally problematic in different ways. Which people like and don't like will depend on what things bug them more and what things they prefer in their Who. Me I prefer Moffat's stuff because I like the optimism, the alien feel of it, and the wonder.

What gets me is the "Moffat is the devil, RTD was a saint, everyone should agree" thing. Ugh. And yes, Moffat's stuff can be sexist, and I like it in spite of that. So was RTD's. In my opinion equally, though in different ways.

Fandom has very short memories. RTD would be crucified on Tumblr for some of the things he said and did. I do think Moffat is the worse writer at the moment, though. Also, New Who started nine years ago - a lot of the people who say Moffat is irredeemably evil were probably under ten years old back then and not really watching critically. Even if they've rewatched, the tint of nostalgia will still be there.
