Yeah, same here.

Re: Naruto-Baby bye bye bye (spoilers)

Yeah, Kaguya's power was dimensional. One had acid, one was lava, one had lots of gravity, one was made of snow, etc. You're welcome!

Y, though if you look at the quotes from the book upthread it's telegraphed that people can't tell from looking at him what race he is, so the narrator's subjective description of color does not necessarily clear it up.

(This whole conversation is confirming my whole opinion that Gaiman not just out and saying Shadow was black if he wanted him to be black is annoying.)

There are also some interesting studies about how people seem to perceive an accent as stronger or less noticeable depending on what the speaker looks like, where the same recording was used with different pictures and got different results.

(...you know how when you start using a word ironically, you put yourself on a slippery slope to using it for real?

Never feel bad about having fun with language. As long as you don't turn into one of those OMG KAWAII~ people you're fine.

Re: How do you define passive aggressive?

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2014-08-29 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I do not think it is passive-agressive in itsef, though some passive-agressive people use correcting as masked criticism that is basically malicious.

If you feel neither of you are, then chances are that the person calling you that might be recognizing it as part of a pattern of someone else they know, even if your motivations are completely different. If that makes sense.

Re: How often do you shampoo/condition your hair?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I wash my hair every other day. I tried that no wash thing but I had no patience for it.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Err…no.

Human beings have racism (well…tribalism and protection of kin groups might be a better term) hard-wired into them. Look at how some POC treat other POC.

The reason it's most prominent with white people is because they're the ones who have cultural and economic dominance and thus can exert privilege.

But white people aren't inherently more racist than anyone else.

Throwing in my own two-cents on this. I'm Indian, but kinda light-skinned for a Bengali woman (probably due to fraternizing with white people in my family a few generations back), and my bone- and hair-structure aren't the most obviously Indian.

I get asked what my race is ALL THE DAMN TIME because people have trouble telling - and I usually don't tell them, but make them guess. It is incredibly rare for anyone to guess Indian, or even Asian. Most people first assume Hispanic (which, brown girl living in Los Angeles, it makes sense). After that, they go all over the damn planet trying to guess my race, often taking over a dozen guess to get there (or just never getting there, giving up, and then being surprised when I tell them).

I've been mistaken for everything from "very tanned white person" to "half-black", with just about every ethnic minority under the planet thrown in.

It takes surprisingly little to throw people off about race.

Re: How often do you shampoo/condition your hair?

[personal profile] chardmonster 2014-08-29 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I shampoo just about every damn day, and use a leave in spray conditioner to make the mop harder to comb. Sometimes I'll skip shampoo but only if I'm not doing anything. The alternative is my hair getting really gross.

Having hair that gets greasy SUCKS, but if that's the price of this killer tan I'll take it. Also the conditioner smells like coconut.

Re: Are you a tea/coffee/chocolate snob?

[personal profile] cushlamochree 2014-08-29 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, exactly. I hate that buttery smoothness. I just can't stand that texture in the mouth, really dislike it. It's the same reason I can't stand putting milk in coffee or tea. Something about the texture is just... bleh.

I do like drinking milk on its own though. IDK.

College

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I'm supposed to graduate next semester but I'm thinking of saying screw it and double majoring in another subject, mostly because I want a chance to learn a third language. Damn, should I fucking do it or not?

Super greasy hair runs in my family so I usually shampoo once a day, and sometimes once every other day. I hardly ever condition it though because I've found that a lot of conditioner will make my hair get oily more quickly and my hair is just as soft and what-not without it

Maybe every week and a half? /black hair

Re: How often do you shampoo/condition your hair?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Every 3 days, though sometimes up to 5 days on that rare occasion that my hair stays magically clean. I use random sls/sles-free shampoos and Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle conditioner.

I don't wash with it, but I've used ACV for a rinse. My hair was silky afterward, but got oily much faster than usual.

Re: Can you ID these caterpillars?

[personal profile] mekkio 2014-08-29 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Looks like Eastern Tent caterpillars. They are moth caterpillars. Not butterfly ones. And they are actually pretty common. Usually you can see a huge silk nest of them in trees just wiggling about during the spring and summer months.

I am guessing you are taking this from somewhere in North America?

Reading books - fic has taken over and I keep trying
Writing fic - even though I have plenty of ideas to be written down, I can't seem to get them on paper/typed.

You know what Japanese culture thing I wish we did over here? That thing about the second button of your shirt. I'm not in high school anymore anyway but whatever, it's cute.

1. Are you (or your parents) paying for college?
2. Would you be using this language for something specific?

I ask because it's really fucking easy to fall into the trap of staying in school longer than you need to in an effort to put off adulthood. I'm not saying that's you! But make sure it isn't.

Re: Can you ID these caterpillars?

Thank you! I tried fuzzy black caterpillar and fuzzy gray caterpillar and the closest match I found was something with the header "this can kill you." But walnut caterpillar seems much more likely.

I'm somewhat similar. I'm kind of face-blind, and I don't really tend to imagine characters physically much at all. They're more shapes to me, bundles of impressions and size and movement.

Possibly by an odd coincidence, then, that meant that my default impression of Shadow was dark, but for a completely different reason. Between his name, the fact that he's kind of gloomy, the very noir style of the book, and possibly the fact that I may have partially registered the question of his race early on, there were times when I was imagining him almost as a literal shadow, a dark human shape at the center of the narrative. I think I would actually have been surprised if he was white, because by about half-way in I really did not associate him with light colours at all.

Which, given who he turns out to be, is mildly ironic, really.
