Re: How often do you shampoo/condition your hair?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 10:41 am (UTC)(link)
My hair can't take more frequently than once a week. It's entirely down to the individual though, there is no right and wrong. Just go with what feels best for your hair and scalp, anon, and experiment with what you like. Ignore everyone else.

FS regular who has been lurking here.

I just wanted to get away from the trolls. They make everything tedious to the extreme.

Why would an anon community have problems with something that strips anonymity? I have no idea at all.

Some reasons:
The secrets have been less about fandom and more about the submitter's own personal issues with a tangential fandom connection to avoid the fail!bar. That is a hard thing to get excited by.

There is no all consuming fandom or fandom wank that everyone can get excited by.

IP logging on.

Secrets being text only rather than having a fandom picture or manip. Again, hard to work up a buzz.

People not feeling the love.

Case being a little trigger happy on the freeze button or delete thread option if we go off topic with sing-a-longs or stuff like that. I'm not talking about deleting the suicide encouragement or the cow pooping guy, but the more harmless stuff and even if an argument does get heated or controversial, that is no reason to kill the thread. Case needs to ease back on that or there is no point even starting a thread or conversation if it is just going to be killed. The IP logging doesn't help here.

Dog ate my laptop.

Secrets, when actually about a fandom and not the submitter, for niche fandoms that by their nature can only have limited appeal (not a bad thing, or a good thing, just a thing).

Some other stuff.

I dunno, Herbal Essences turned crap when they eliminated their Intensive Blends line. Of course, I'm sure it had sulfates too, but any attempt to wash my hair with HE products makes me feel like I'm just rubbing wet dirt onto it.

You think white when a man walks into a bar, fine, whatever.

You think white when a man walks into a bar and someone asks him if he's part black? Maaaaaybe you need to re-examine your mindset.

Assuming this person's friend is like the friend I have of the same stripe, it's probably not that the person won't watch. It's probably more than if they see the movies in your house, or if you mention that you're going to watch one, or have one on if they come over to visit, then they feel the need to tell you, repeatedly and at length, how terrible the movies are. It really saps the enjoyment out of a thing when you have to hide your DVDs before you invite a person over.

Thanks for your perspective. I've been reading a lot of African-American writers lately talking about how race affects their everyday lives & their awareness of the way other people treat them. For that reason, thinking about Shadow's failure to reflect or comment on this in any way strikes me as jarring & 'this is written by a white dude'. Not that I think it should be in every sentence but that I find it odd he would never think about it. This is obviously just one perspective and I appreciate you sharing yours.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 11:53 am (UTC)(link)
This. I actually didn't assume any "race" for Shadow because "race" isn't a term I think in. I think that was the whole point of the character and the descriptions: Shadow is set up as trying to be as forgettable as possible. People have a trouble defining him. The thing with the guard? I always thought that was in the book not to explicitely state "he is not white" but to further imply that you can't really pin Shadow down in terms of race, character and motivation. Even after I heard about the race wank, I thought that was the whole point, not being able to tell his race and that he could have parts of just about everything.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 11:54 am (UTC)(link)
As I said further down, I always assumed that this particular scene was yet another way to set up Shadow as a character that people have trouble grasping.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Why should an author have to write "this character is of the black race" instead of "this character has coffee-colored skin," or "this character has dark brown skin?"

That's kind of the point of this discussion: people overlook what are actually very explicit descriptors in order to keep assuming that characters are white. All "reading carefully" means is "actually paying attention."

I legimately laughed. I hope OP'll do something along these lines.

And I don't like their creams either.

wondering how many people who wash their hair every day because it gets greasy super fast wouldn't have greasy hair if they'd stop washing it every day

Because racial identity is about more than skin tone. Because it's made explicit that people can't tell Shadow's race by looking at him. And because the coffee-color thing is widely mocked in writing about this issue: see here and here just for starters.)

And -- people on this thread ARE actually discussing textual details in the book (the conversation with the guard, the 'sickle-cell' reference) and having different interpretations of what they mean. This is the opposite of "not paying attention."

I think we just have different interpretations of the book, thanks for your input.

Reaching ...

Re: What is something you enjoyed doing, but no longer do?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Reading is the main one. I used to really enjoy it but lately I haven't had time for it. I'm constantly reading news articles and things online since I have to be in front of a computer all day at work, but not really books anymore (or even fanfics, which is another thing I used to enjoy).

Related, I guess fandom in general. I still post here, mainly for the GC, but there are only a couple fandoms I'm even interested in right now, and they're really small ones that no one ever talks about. (That's probably why I don't really read fanfic anymore, either, because there really isn't any for the fandoms I'd be interested in reading it for.)

And cooking/baking, although it's not that I don't enjoy it anymore. I'm sure I still would if I did it, but I'm trying to lose weight, and considering that there's no one to share the stuff I bake with (basically everyone I see on a regular basis is on a special diet for one reason or another) I end up either eating it all myself so it just doesn't make sense.

Re: Health insurance question?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 01:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm, back when I was on my parents' policy, it came addressed to me, but at their address (well, I lived there back then, too). That was years ago, though, so maybe it's changed.

Like I mentioned before, if they can find someone they can afford without going through their insurance, there's pretty much no way for their parents to find out. That would be the best bet but it sounds like that probably isn't an option based on their comment above.

Re: Finding it hard to identify with people/characters of a different sexual orientation?

DA

Same! I feel like the OP does about gender but with sex.

OP

That totally makes sense, and is probably what I'll do if I ever end up writing any of those stories.

OP

I'm glad it's not just me! Intellectually I know it's not really any different but it still trips me up until I consciously tell myself that I'm being dumb and to knock it off.

Re: Finding it hard to identify with people/characters of a different sexual orientation?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
OP

I think what the person above described is what's making it hard to relate. I can understand on an intellectual level that how my straight friend feels about her boyfriend is the same way I feel about my girlfriend but I can't imagine ME feeling that way about a guy.

I guess maybe I'm just putting way more emphasis on gender than I should. I've never dated a guy so maybe I'm just imagining that it's SO much different than dating a girl when it really isn't?

Jackie's EMPIRE podcast interview!

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Listen to his recent EMPIRE podcast interview recorded in front of a live audience where he talks about his latest film, the movie business, stunt work, etc. His English is fine and actually adorable (and he talks so fast, which isn't easy to do in a foreign language!), he even admits his English used to be worse in the past when he first got started and that it's still not very good, but that's just Jackie being insecure, like someone else had already pointed out. Everyone in the audience LOVED him, as did the podcasters.

Like Jackie said once: "Everyone adore me." :D
