So the first things he asks is: are you varying types of european-white? Then he asks, are you part black?

But the first thing he assumes is latin and people are surprised readers aren't going "I KNEW IT, HE'S BLACK"?

@_@

I can understand why people focus on the negative when it really bothers them, but I prefer to talk about the good stuff as a way of balancing that out. We need some models for what "right" looks like in addition to pointing out what's wrong.

Decorate with something creepy Haloween style, troll the repairperson a bit. ;)

I like my chocolate to taste like chocolate, though. :) Which is not to say that I don't appreciate dark chocolate, but I don't really like it when the notes get bitter.

His English is probably a little better than my parents, who are also Asian, but I'm pretty sure he's just insecure since there are a lot of people who expect everyone to speak with perfect English. From what I've read, when Jackie first tried breaking into the US movie industry, he was told that audiences were put off by his lack of "good" English skills. There are some people who have a hard time understanding what people say when someone speaks with an accent, but that's not the fault of the person with the accent. I've always felt like Jackie Chan feels like it's something people can't overlook, but honestly, I think the majority of his fans who speak English don't care.

TBH I don't think his English is that bad. I think his English is easy enough to understand when he does interviews.

It's the same thing as when people complained that they couldn't understand Ken Wantanabe in "Inception". It wasn't as bad as people were claiming it to be.

I don't think I've ever watched any of his stuff but now that you mention him crying I'm curious. I love watching those kind of intense reactions to games.

Not exactly. He is being questioned about his race with someone (above quote says it was a prison guard or interrogator of some sort), as they think he might have "something other than white" 'mixed in' (i.e. black, Roma, Native American - though certainly not in those words). Shadow never really confirms or denies it either way, because he doesn't even know who his father is.

I prefer darker chocolate because I like it to be more bitter and less sweet. Milk chocolate is irritatingly sweet to me. Also the texture is better with dark chocolate, but that might just be from eating higher quality chocolate as well.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
His race isn't an issue at all, it's his ancestry.

The descriptions and allusions are pretty vague, which wasn't helped by the fact that I read the book as a ESL, Latin American person, so a lot of the specific descriptors flew right over my head. I just pictured the most basic body-builder/jock type of guy.

And if you're worried about germs, put a little bleach in the rinse water.

OK, I actually opened the book

Guard: "And what are you? A spic? A gypsy?"
"Not that I know of, sir. Maybe."
"Maybe you got n*** blood in you. You got n** blood in you, Shadow?"
"Could be, sir."

And ahh, this gets the secret to make sense to me. He seems to be unsure of his own racial background, but he's perceived as 'not white.' So it kind of (deliberately) supports any conclusion that you want to make and OP is saying that readers who choose to perceive, "Oh, he's probably just a dark-skinned white guy" are actively working on not perceiving the protagonist as POC. Well, that's totally a fair conclusion then, and I see where OP is coming from.*

*Completely not sarcastic, since I know in a forum like this that can be unclear.

ethnic-looking, lol

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
People asking if someone is mixed race =/= saying that someone is mixed race

the most you can say is that he's of ambiguous ethnicity and possibly mixed race (just going from the descriptions in the early part of the book)

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no problems understanding either Jackie Chan or Watanabe, but then again I'm Chinese-American. My parents don't have a heavy accent, but I have relatives/friends who do, so maybe I'm used to it. /shrug

Well it's not waifu-y because the anons that go there usuaslly want to see girl/girl stuff.
Some actually hate the waifu otaku type because for them, they're the reason some pseudo-yuri show never cross the "are they or are they not gay/together ?" border.

Riding bikes. Somewhere along the way in my life I become a wuss.

Baking. Knitting. But I have these weird phases where I get REALLLY into something for a couple months then become completely apathetic towards it.

Mmmmm, tea. Though I'm not a snob, I'll pretty much drink any tea except that powdered crap.

Yeah, see below, I looked at the passage and I get it now.

(Though that's still confusing because he did know his mother and I thought from later in the book that his mother was POC???)

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Some people have a hard time accepting that people are generally products of their environment. The kind who get up in arms if you call, say, Florence Nightingale a racist. She was. All the good she did won't change that. Most everybody in her social milieu was back then. Go back far enough, it's a description more than a condemnation. Obviously racism etc still wasn't right back then, but society had yet to learn better and 'heroes' are still human.

So enjoy the perfect dancing done by two imperfect people.

I'm not a snob about it, but I totally agree with this. I love when it gets really bitter so that you have to sort of use the first bite to get used to it. And the aftertaste is just as good as the main taste when it gets to that high percentage.

Actually he asks if Shadow has any n*** blood in him but it's definitely a conversation that implies Shadow looks to be mixed race. (I just pulled out my copy of the book and looked for the conversation).

The other thing I noticed is how the description specifically pointed out what other people looked like. Low-Key's shaved-short orange-blonde hair; Iceman with blue eyes and white-blonde hair; short guy with a port-wine birthmark, pale hands, watery hazel eyes; the guard with sandy blonde hair and a sandy blonde face, Sam Fetisher who was the blackest black man Shadow had ever seen.

If he were white, don't you think the narrative would've said? Instead there's all this ambiguity. I think the ambiguity in and of itself shows that he's not white.
