Yeah. This kind of thing also just excuses men for bad behavior. "Hey, you can't blame me for acting like such a shit, I'm a dude!" Bullshit. Men have just as well-developed self-control and intelligence and sense of morality as women, and therefore they have just as much responsibility to actually use it in their actions.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Tell that to the minority (but loudest) group of feminists on the internet. And those people wonder why people don't want to call themselves feminists.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-01 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
It's also because people like you keep referring to the vocal minority as feminists instead of "assholes who are wrong". You want to distinguish between the two? Don't legitimize the assholes by lumping them in with the legitimate feminists.

I just want to say that as a man, I'd be totally fine with having a Prehensile tail, it sounds like it would be fun.

As a woman, I too want a prehensile tail. As long as it doesn't make me pass out when someone grabs it.

Man. There are not a lot of DBZ gifs online.

Don't be so tedious.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I doubt that was intended to be feminist.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
It's so fucking weird. I believe he thinks he's a sincere feminist but he's also consistently a chauvinist in his writing who constantly wants to play with gender stereotypes. I don't know how he can combine those two things that way.

Your first mistake was thinking Moffat is a feminist.

The second mistake would be that female characters you like will always say things you agree with. Vastra is kick-ass, but her opinions on humans are...well, her own, and not necessarily something that should be representative of feminsm or whatever.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know. There are fans who will latch onto that phrase and repeat it like children repeating things. Adult fans as well as children.

+1.

Vastra is one of my favorite Doctor Who characters, but I wasn't overtly fond of this line.

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2014-09-01 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
The line felt more like Moffat trying to pander to feminists and ending up doing the exact opposite.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
There really is no pleasing the RTD fanboys. He isn't coming back and Moffat will leave in his own time, not yours.

[personal profile] comradesmiler 2014-08-31 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, not all feminists are like that.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, get over yourself.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
It was just meant to be funny.

And it was.

At least, to me, and the others I was with.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah there is a difference between sensitive to issues, and so over-sensitive that you see that issue in everything. The anti-Moff crowd are so anxious to find fault that they are now pretty much insane.

I honestly don't find it funny at all. Not because it's offensive - I think it points to some recurrent issues with Moffat's writing - but I just don't think it's a funny joke. It's really old-fashioned and hackneyed. Like, that's a dinner theater level, "Men do like this, women do like this" joke.

Honestly, the only problems I had with Moffat's writing in this episode were the dick and (possible) sex jokes.

"Oh, the symbolism!" KIDS WILL WANNA BUY THOSE SONIC SCREWDRIVERS AND YOU'RE ALWAYS TELLING THEM IT'S BASICALLY JUST A DICK HAHAHAHAH???!!?!

And the one where Clara was seeing men doing something similar to sports, what was that about, really. Necessary? No. Funny? Nooooope.

For fucks sake.

[personal profile] chardmonster 2014-08-31 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't want to live in a world where people aren't allowed to complain about the opposite sex. Humans gripe. It's what we do. Perhaps if you talked to more you'd understand that. Someone making a joke about guys isn't the same as a blinking misandry sign. Some dudes complaining about their exes aren't oppressing you by doing so.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
....

She's an alien lizard. In her eyes, what she says is true and not supposed to be some commentary on men vs. women.

Good grief didn't take long for the Moffat bashers to come out in full force.

Uhhh she makes it pretty clear that she's talking about the sex and not using "men" like "mankind"...

(Anonymous) 2014-09-01 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
VASTRA: I love monkeys - they're so funny!

JENNY: Oh, I see! So people are monkeys now, are they?

VASTRA: No, my dear, people are apes. Men are monkeys.

Can someone please, please, please explain to me how on earth anyone can read this as being about Silurians vs humanoids, and not about men and women? The line is explicitly about Vastra reassuring Jenny that she (Jenny) (despite being a human being) was not included when Vastra insulted monkeys. Only men are. What possible fucking way on earth is there to read that and say that it's not about gender? Why do people keep saying that it's just about being a Silurian? How in Christ's name are you reading that line?
