I have to admit that the guy who played it was hilarious, but really the thing about horror games is really the reaction videos. (even though I think a lot of it is staged, seriously I cannot imagine people getting that scared over video games)

"Because I don't get scared over video games, no one can, they're all faking it."

And because I don't get scared in "scary" movies, no one ever gets scared at scary movies and is faking it.

It's not that people can't find them scary, it's just that in LPs it seems more like over-acting.

Exactly! There has to be quite a bit of acting in it. I mean I startle just like everyone else but that level of scared that comes out of a person every single time no matter what, my belief in their fright is suspended.

Markiplier is a great example of the over-acting. I've seen some of his work and enjoyed it but good god he needs to turn down the faking a little. It's what kept me from actually subscribing.

If that's acting, he should get an award.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
it's pretty easy to get over enthusiastic and make ridiculous faces/screaming in front of a camera, nothing award worthy

pewdipie does that shit all the fucking time and he's the most subscribed youtuber (not that i think pewdipie is any good)

He gets by making crass jokes and acting and screaming really fakely and badly. Mark actually comes across as genuine, is my point.

ayrt

I think it's probably because of the presence of the mic; most LPers narrate everything, so if they get a bit scared it comes out more over the top since it's voiced aloud (that happens to me, at least, if I'm talking and gaming at the same time). It also helps that the reaction is what the audience is typically looking for, like you mentioned.

You've explained it so much better, thank you anon. I can actually see where it's coming from now!

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you. Ever used a mic?

I think the commentor above yours addressed it the best and helped me to understand it a little bit better, but thanks!

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll explain it a bit more, then, to help even further understand. Basically, LPers tend to turn the mics up to catch even their whispers clearly because sometimes you go quiet when you get immersed correctly. This has the unfortunate side-effect of your louder reactions seeming... TOO loud and in-your-face. It absolutely doesn't mean they're acting, just that mics currently don't scale to volume that I'm aware of.

Watch the faces of someone LPing, it takes a lot to act out genuine fright.

The comment to your comment said it best.

Believe me, even I find it absurd how badly horror games (and movies, but less so) scare me, but I do all the shaking and screaming without an audience to appreciate it.
