This is the dumbest shit to me. The "trend" of colouring in noses shades of reddish is something that predates Tumblr completely.

uhh you know Tumblr isn't one artist right

Do people just like to throw the world tumblr around like a bad writer throws around adverbs? It makes you sound like you're new to the internet. This is an old, old 'cartoon' style choice, like, early 2000s (most likely from previous decades, considering the long history of comics). Just say you don't like the style choice ffs

There was one pretty prominent artist back in 2004-2005 (THE DARK LJ AGES!) that colored noses like that. It drove me crazy.

I don't typically see red noses in art on Tumblr unless someone is drawing their Animal Crossing mayor.

You make little sense

(Anonymous) 2014-09-22 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't quite understand what a "Tumblr nose" is. You could have at least shown a picture without covering it all up so we know what nonsense you speak of.

But really, this is probably not "tumblr nose" and more "people on your particular feed are all drawing in one particular style at the moment".

There's also other numerous stylistic trends that have crept into popular works such as characters with long-noodly-definitely-not-anatomically-correct arms, female character who are drawn so unrealistically skinny that they literally look like they're anorexic (Winx Club)

You can express like or dislike of either of these styles, I don't give a shit. I personally kind of like the shaded noses (as long as the art is intended to be cartoony in the first place)

I've noticed this too!

There's a difference between that slightly flushed or sunburnt pink look and this.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhinophyma

It's not very cute.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-22 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
That stylistic decision (?) has been around longer than tumblr.

I don't mind it.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-22 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen people bitching about the style choice since Elfwood was big. Jesus Christ, kids, Tumblr didn't invent EVERYTHING. It's not a "Tumblr nose", it's a nose that's been around for-fucking-ever.

Everybody's talking about how this has been around for forever, but I've never seen it except for Benedict Cumbermuffins fanart. I just figured the artists were trying to make him as ugly as possible.

Ignoring whether or not it originated on Tumblr or not, I agree. It reminds me of those tissue commercials that play in the winter. Not an attractive look.

I know this didn't originate from tumblr (and I haven't even seen a lot of it around tumblr... maybe I'm in the wrong fandoms), but my feelings are mixed on it. It really depends on the individual piece. Sometimes it can be cute, it can fit, and sometimes it looks out of place. (I also have the 'cold' thought.)

(Anonymous) 2014-09-22 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"tumblr" nose might not have been the best blanket term to go with OP, but I get it, sort of? Super rosy noses aren't a problem to me there, but I've associated tumblr hivemind with another trend that grind my gears before. It's just because I happen to see it most there that it turns into "tumblr why" sooner than "artist why" so *shrug*

TOTALLY AGREE

(Anonymous) 2014-09-22 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I've noticed this too and it annoys the hell out of me, especially if it appears on otherwise decent fanart. I just don't get it. It looks like shit and makes characters look like they have a cold, as you said. Which disgust me. I don't want to be thinking about other people's runny noses and germs.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-22 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It's twee or something.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-22 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I only ever noticed it frequently from one specific Official Homestuck Art Team Artist, and just assumed all the baby tumblr artists were copying her. In terms of the red nose style becoming widespread. Of course it's been around longer than that -- but to me, when something gets the "tumblr-" prefix, it means the kids have latched onto it.

I've never understood that either. I don't even get where it's coming from, artistically, and it totally throws me out of a drawing.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-22 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Like a heap of other people have said, that trend is older than Tumblr. It does look terrible, though. I've noticed it often goes alongside reddening up other random areas, like shoulders or elbows, as if the character has weird patchy sunburn.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-22 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I follow a lot of artists (of all kinds) on tumblr, but man a lot of cartoon styles there just straight don't appeal to me. I get that a lot of people there are teens and don't have much experience, but even some of really populars ones come off this way. It feels like they're this weird mix between modern cartoon (that's just superficially cute with little personality) and the worst aspects of anime. A lot of them aren't very good at imaging things in 3D either, so they rely on short hands and it feels very flat.

Yeah, I agree, I don't really like that presentation either. I think it's because it makes me imagine that the poor character being drawn is always cold :(

(Also, when I first saw this image, I thought that was a ballsack and was wondering why it wasn't linked)

(Anonymous) 2014-09-23 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks OP, I was thinking the same thing today as well

(Anonymous) 2014-09-23 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I feel ya. I also hate when people do the same things with knees -- color them pink compared to the rest of the legs, usually combined with super long and exaggeratedly feminine legs. I can understand the aesthetic (it makes people look more... hearty/childlike/rosy, I guess?) but I hate that it's such a popular aesthetic. I also think it's a very Caucasian-only look.
