I am an adult. I have been to college. Yet, I fail at simple tasks adults should be able to do. I am terrible at using a knife and fork to cut meat! It is like my hands just don't understand how they need to hold the utensils (or how to keep the damn plate from moving all over the place).

I am also terrible at using lighters. But that stems from trying to use one one as a kid and burning myself. Been scared of them fuckers ever since.

What simple things do you fail at?

Plunging toilets. I've tried, but I just can't get it to work.

I'm terrible at taking my trash and putting it in the trashcan. And other housecleaning maneuvers.

Also, I set off the smoke alarm pretty much every time I try to cook meat on the stove.

Can't change a tire for the life of Reilly. And I still haven't figured out how to put air in one correctly.

Dealing with bugs. Can't do it for love or money. I couldn't hardly sleep last night because there was a giant cockroach loose in my room :(

I'm also useless at picking ripe fruit at the store and at folding laundry.

I'm terrible at cooking. There are a couple of things that I can cobble together, but for the most part, I'm a complete moron in the kitchen.

I can't tie my shoes. I can do it the "wrong" way, so it's not a problem, but apparently I am supposed to do it a different way.

I don't know how to use a dishwasher, and people think that means I can't wash dishes. No, it doesn't.

Directions, please don't ever ask to go anywhere where I haven't gone to before. I will get lost and will get upset. At myself.

I can't pull the bag out of the trashcan without spilling it all over the floor. Ew.

Also, I can cook! Unless people are visiting, then they get way overdone steak, underdone veg, and we run out of everything else.

Aaaaand, I never remember to clean something when I actually have the time and impetus to actually clean.

Folding laundry and ironing clothes. Sewing a basic stitch, I can manage, but it takes me way longer than it should.

I feel like I have things together until I have to go to the bank and stare blankly at the deposit / transfer slips hoping the knowledge will come to me.

I suck at keeping things tidy, and cleaning things before they get out of hand.
I think I need to be appalled and to have the added stress that people are coming to my house and they are going to see what a disgusting human being I am before I can actually clean something.

Any horizontal surface is a place for me to leave things.

I'm afraid of changing ceiling bulbs because I have bad balance on ladders.

I can't hang pictures either. I feel like I might be hammering a nail into something important, like water or wiring. Sticky hooks are the best invention ever.

getting my oil changed before it expires and becomes a gunky mess.

I have yet to kill a car that way but I have gotten many a disapproving look from car guys throughout the years. The last time I managed to remember to do it, it had been just shy of two years since the previous change. the guys at the shop were boggled that my car hadn't seized up and died yet.

I use forks and knives wrong handed. Despite the fact that I'm mostly right handed, I always have to use the fork with my right hand and the knife with my left. It feels completely wrong to do it any other way. This got me funny looks the few times I've been to a proper restaurant, because I had to reverse the cutlery.

Loading a dishwasher. I have zero understanding of how to use the space efficiently, and practicing and watching other people do it has been no help at all.

I apparently tie my shoes in the weirdest way ever, and can't do it the normal way at all. I learned to tie my shoes from my dad who has no left hand.

I also suck at digging holes, but in my defense, after about two or three inches the dirt around here turns into really fucking hard clay.

I hate lighters, I've never burned myself with one, but the stupid gear where things you have to flick to get them to light hurt the shit out of my thumb.

I'm awful at changing beds, specifically putting the mattress sheet on. Like I will get it on but it will be a fucking mess(and will probably ride up at some-point).

And cooking potatoes, doesn't matter what kind or how I do it I fuck them up. They are the one food-stuff I always fail at cooking.

Cleaning my living space. I frequently ask help for it, and it's still a mess. Also sorting important documents, I frequently lose them.

Despite two years of softball I am still terrible at throwing for distance. I can throw with accuracy but geez. So unmanly.

Same as you, OP. I am at a loss as to how to hold a knife and fork like most other people do. Knife in the right hand, fork in the left, with the prongs facing downward. I watch my husband expertly move food around his plate with the knife and fork, competently spearing a portion of it and cutting off a piece and bringing it to his mouth in one smooth damned motion and I DIE of jealousy.

I clutch my knife in my hand and stab with the fork and saw at the meat and then pull my fork out of the main chicken/beef portion and stab the piece I just hacked off. I've tried doing it correctly and it never works out. The food careens off the plate.

I think it's because I was raised by my Asian mom. During my first six or seven years, I ate rice with my fingers, and sometimes a spoon. Rarely with a fork until I got into the school system, and never really with a knife except in prep.

I'm 43 and I don't feel like a real grown up sometimes because of this.
