Do you go to cons?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-25 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you usually have fun or has it ever felt like waste of money? And what's your main reason for going: meeting friends, going to panels, cosplaying, something else?

I haven't, mainly because there aren't any nearby.

I've been to Comicon a couple of times and had a blast. I just like the whole thing. The atmosphere, the panels, seeing all the cosplay, being introduced to new artists, etc, I just really enjoyed it as a whole.

I've gone to a few with friends and they're just plain not for me.

I've toyed with the idea of going to one but I'd probably just stand there like a doofus since I don't really know what I'd be there for or do.

There's a local one near me, but I've never enjoyed going. Too expensive, nothing I really want to do, and it just makes me feel awkward.

I guess I'm not "fannish" enough or something, idk.

I've been going to cons since the 80s. The only one I was disappointed in was a local one, that had a very weird layout, not to mention, the stuff I'd come to see was cancelled at the last minute. And the dealer room sucked.

Most conventions I've been to, I've had a lovely time.

I generally go with friends, and go for the art gallery and shopping.

I went to a couple of anime cons when I was younger when it was hard to get anime and manga related goods. My sister and I used to run around with cash in hand and buy up a ton of things. Now I don't go because 1) you can buy that stuff now anywhere and often cheaper and 2) I got tired of the things I bought cluttering my place.

So, I stop going. The panels never interested me. It was just a once a year shopping spree to me.

I've gone to a few but I don't go any more. Most of my fandom activity is online.

I went to SDCC last year, and once was enough for me there, between the high-ass prices and the Disney World-esque lines/crowds, ugh. I am going to ECCC in Seattle next year, but more because I'm going to see a friend or two who I stayed with during SDCC and I need an honest-to-God vacation every couple years. I'm honestly not holding my breath for any panels/guests that interest me there, though (though hey, Patrick Warburton is always good).

Guests are also a p. big draw for me: I had thought of going to Wizard World New Orleans (or whatever they're calling it) next January for a day or two solely to see Michael Rooker, Sean Gunn, and Johnny Yong Bosch... but coupled with the last minute expenses + ECCC 2 months later = no friends or travel companions, it just wasn't financially feasible. Ah well.

That said, I don't do cons otherwise because I'm one of those introverts who can only do maybe 3-4 hours of socialization before I need to go back to my room and recharge, haha.

I've been to one, and it was a great experience, but I don't know if I'd go to the same one again. Maybe if I had a group of/one or two equally nerdy friends to go with, or a really killer cosplay to wear, or if there was a panelist I really wanted to see, but overall I don't think I'd go back.

Every year I go to Emerald City ComiCon, and every year it is the greatest goddamn thing. It's the highlight of my whole year. I meet up with friends who travel out to go, the panels are extraordinary (and there's so many of them!), the dealer's room is always chock full of great stuff (plus I get to meet a lot of my favorite webcomic artists!), they always get awesome guests...the diversity and the energy in the crowd is fantastic too. I really really love it.

I'm thinking of cosplaying this year, but I'm not sure what yet!

If I go, I usually go for panels. And it costs me more money than I'd like, but I try to budget by refraining from actually buying expensive merchandise.

I like cons. I like going to panels, going to the art rooms, and meeting people. But not all cons are made alike. I've gone to some where I was really bored and I'd never go again. There are others I go to every year.

I've been going to cons since 1999 and I can't say I've ever had a truly bad con experience yet. I always go with a group of friends, so that's built-in fun right there because we don't tend to get to see each other outside of cons (due to living all over the place).

Aside from that, there are always some interesting panels and guests and I love looking at the artist's alley and art shows.

I hate lines and crowds. So... no. :P The closest was I got when I went to the Harry Potter movies with other fans, and even then I never went to the midnight releases. Because again, lines and crowds.

Yes. I've been to Dragoncon 3 times. It is a lot of fun. I don't tend to go elaborate with my costumes. As cheep as possible. And it is much more fun to go with people. I went once on my own and twice with my dad. We do our own thing and do some things together and it is really fun. I mostly go to panels.

My friends and I go to a local, small/medium sized con every year. We go to cosplay and its like, a fun traditional thing we do. Its fun to just hang out with people, see good cosplay, go to panels, sometimes get merch (though I don't usually get too much of that. Artists Alleys can be cool though.)

I was just at Rose City Comic Con this past weekend.

If anyone saw the dude dressed as Elijah Snow on Saturday, that was me.

I used to go to cons every year, but I stopped going a few years ago. It never felt like a waste of money though, I usually had fun. I would pretty much go to go to panels and hit the dealer's room, those were my main objectives.

Love cons, I've gone to at least one every year since my first (about 8 years ago I think). My reasons for going are a mix of the panels, shopping, hanging out with friends, and just feeling like I "belong" somewhere. I know not everyone has as good of experiences at cons, but...for me, my local con is one of the few places I can go to where I'm not constantly wigging out that people think I'm a weirdo. It's really comforting.

I've been to a few cons, most of them were GenCons that are more for gaming that anything else. But I went to the MCM Expo in London a few years ago with some friends and that was good fun.

I've gone to Dragoncon four times. The first time was cool (kind of dizzying and overwhelming), the second time was awesome (I didn't want to go home), but the last two times just felt like a waste of time and money. There was no one I wanted to see at the panels and the ones I went to anyway were boring as hell. I screwed myself by being fairly mono-fandom.

i've gone to fan expo in toronto a few times, i love it. i go for a mix of things, i dress up, see the celebs, meet other people going. i do spend a lot of money to go every year, but it's the only one i go to really so it's worth it to me.

I went to Yaoi Con with a friend this year but it was mostly to network/check out some LGBT publishers, so we only went on Saturday.

We did a raffle/gave out cookies. It was hilarious how many people were perplexed by the concept of free cookies.
