Fanfics

What fanfic plots, themes, etc do you want to see fics of? Or do you think there need to be more of?

I'd like more villain POV fics where they weren't woobified and where they were actually in character. I like seeing things from the bad guy's perspective, but it is so hard to find stuff that actually works.

Re: Fanfics

(Anonymous) 2014-10-24 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
If all else fails you can always read Richard III again. Best bad guy ever.

Re: Fanfics

(Anonymous) 2014-10-24 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, bad-guy centred fics which don't dissolve into being petted and hugged by the hero would be nice.

Re: Fanfics

(Anonymous) 2014-10-24 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
More complicated realistic romance.

Re: Fanfics

(Anonymous) 2014-10-24 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Genfic. Like if the fandom is a TV show is X-Files, then I'd like to see a fic where Mulder and Scully investigate a cool unexplained case... not a fic where Mulder and Scully make cow eyes at one another, do something angsty, then have sex and get engaged.

Re: Fanfics

(Anonymous) 2014-10-24 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
This. Although I even more like non-romantic fic that doesn't have a case. Fics that explore their friendship/characters/backstories, deal with personal problems, flesh out glossed over or missing scenes in between/after episodes or during the events of an episode. That kind of stuff. There's a lot of great ways to do this without subsuming it all in romance.

I also really like casefic, but it's just hard to write or find genuinely good and interesting ones.

Co-signed forever!

This! Although like the first anon says, fics with canon-esque plots or cases are really hard to do well. And there's loads of different non-romantic kinds of fics that are character-heavy and interesting to read about.

Re: Fanfics

(Anonymous) 2014-10-25 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I actually don't understand the appeal of "they investigate a cool unexplained case." The show did that. The show did that every week. What need is there for fanfic? What would the fanfic do that would be different from the show? Not saying that all fic has to be shippy (because god no, it doesn't), but I don't understand why someone would want fic that just rehashes what the show does.

Romance/slash/smut that also has good plot - or rather good stories that happen to have a lot of romantic and/or explicit content.

So often it seems either/or.

Re: Fanfics

(Anonymous) 2014-10-24 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're into any older fandoms, try those. They tended to have a lot more good both plotty and smutty/romantic fics than newer fandoms.

Hurt/comfort where everyone still acts in character rather than being reduced to cliches. Not every character is going to act the exact same way when something bad happens to them, and while trauma might irrevocably change a person, it's won't change someone beyond the Standard Trauma Blob that ends up getting inserted into 99% of H/C fic. Likewise, not everyone who's filling the 'comfort' roll is going to be good at it, and when I do see depictions of people fucking up the comfort roll, it's usually in a very similar way.

Worldbuilding that takes into account how people interact with the world and how it shapes them. BtSDLb is my favorite worldbuilding fanfic because it takes the time to consider what an alien culture might be like, and how people growing up in that culture might think.

Romance that isn't ideal, where all the problems aren't worked out and both/all parties reach a happy compromise, but where they still stick together because they're either codependent or because they value the relationship over whatever the problem was.

Re: Fanfics

So much yes on the first one. I mean, what's the POINT of hurt/comfort if it isn't used as a way to explore unique characterizations and relationships? Doesn't have to some masterpiece of elaborate meaningfulness, but I don't get the point of hurt/comfort without concrete personalities.

Hurt/comfort by its nature is OOC and cliched. If it wasn't then it wouldn't be hurt and comfort.

That is something fun to shoot for! I'm trying to write scripts for comics like this, but it's hard to do. The challenge makes it worth while though.

Broad ones: Gen fic, preferably friendship + whump. HORROR FIC, there is almost NO good horror fic around.

Specific (very long): I got this idea in my head that SHIELD's on staff psychologists were Hydra. And chances are Steve had to have mandatory sessions with one. I figure Steve probably doesn't have much experience with therapy. So I want a fic where Hydra takes this chance to fuck with Captain America.

Like gaslighting (they make lights blink during sessions which the therapist ignores, they make him paranoid), induces guilt in Steve (you could have saved more people in New York, Bucky only went on that mission for you and you were not fast enough to save him, etc), increases his PTSD (maybe they try extreme exposure therapy), if Steve is having a sexuality crisis they make him feel ashamed, ummmm encouraging risk taking/suicidal behavior.

I just really want that. Maybe when the Hydra files are released on the net, someone notices and has to explain to Steve that what happened was not okay.

Want more gen whump or h/c. Same with familial whump.

I didn't know that horror fic was a thing, but now I want that, too.

I'm really hankering for some Chris/Piers that isn't post-RE6 fix-it fic. Something about them doing missions for the BSAA maybe.

Less specifically, more fanfic for video game fandoms that aren't RPGs.

Rape fic that isn't overly sexualized and is instead gross and traumatic.

Not for any politically correct reason; that's just what I like.

Established relationship fic that doesn't feel like gushy honeymoon fic, doesn't use tired romance cliches for plot (like insecurity and jealousy), and doesn't have the characters holding hands, cooing over each other, and having sex every other second of the fic. Especially when it's out of character. Established relationship fic where the characters actually still feel like the characters, and not some generic sappy couple. It's like these writers are basing their fictional relationship off of what they've seen in chick flicks, instead of thinking what a relationship between the two characters would actually be like. (This is the worst when it written between two older men.)
I have read good established relationship fic. But it is very few and far inbetween.

I'd like to see more fics focused on gray characters that don't turn them into either demons or saints. To use the Harry Potter fandom as an example: Dumbledore and Snape both have only two default depictions in fanfic, the former is either a completely saintly grandpa or a secret evil bastard (and the inverse for the latter). I'd rather see them as their conflicted selves who are both trying to do what they perceive as the right thing, but not always in the right ways.

Romance fic where the main problem is NOT because of some stupid misunderstanding that could immediately be cleared up if character A and Character B would just talk to each other instead of spending several chapters angsting over an issue that doesn't actually exist.

I'd like some diversity with character's reactions to traumatic events like abuse and rape. It seems like most fic have characters react by becoming very withdrawn, frightened, and flinching at everything. That's certainly not an invalid reaction as a lot of people actually do respond to traumatic events that way, but it's also not the only reaction.
