Re: Negativity thread

I just found out that we're getting yet another special needs volunteer at my workplace next week, and I wish management understood how difficult this makes life for the actual staff. Especially when they turn up without carers, so in addition to 70+ vulnerable animals I now have to babysit a person. I'm not trained for this, I'm not comfortable with it, and on several occasions it's had a negative impact on the animals (pens left open, locks jammed, timid animals roughly grabbed and shouted at).

I'm sorry, but if you'd need a professional carer to help out at home, then you'll also need them if you want to volunteer. Otherwise you're not doing any good, you're making things worse.

There was someone at the place I used to volunteer who was special needs, which was fine. He did the jobs assigned to him, there was no problem there.

He was banned from using the toilet because he'd shit and get it everywhere, and wouldn't even wipe. This was more information than I ever needed, and I almost hate my boss for telling it to me because I could never look at him the same again.

(There were other people with special needs who did their jobs without shitting up the bathroom, which was appreciated.)

I'm sorry that your workplace isn't handling the situation well. I've done volunteer work with riding for the disabled and it can be a very rewarding and fun experience for everyone if people are correctly supervised, staff have been trained, and the day is well planned.

Ideally, there has to be better communication between carers or the organisation that sets up volunteer openings and your management. I'm not sure what ages or level of independence your volunteers are at, but I would imagine that the people setting this up have assumed your management would provide training to staff and possibly an altered roster so that you had adequate time and resources to assist the volunteers.

I hope something changes before anything bad happens. Poor supervision and animals is a bad combination.

I wonder if there's a way to subtly suggest that the organization who does this handles it differently? The intentions sound great, but if the persons don't have their carers and need help, that also seems to take away from their own opportunity to do something themselves, which I'll assume is partly the idea here.

Having said that, it's possible this person won't be as needy - not everyone with special needs is severely disabled and/or needs a carer.
