Foods you didn't think you'd like

(Anonymous) 2014-11-02 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't really like the idea of sushi because I'm not very fond of cooked fish. But it turns out that hey, I prefer tuna and salmon raw! I also like eel, which is something I never thought I'd say.

What are some of your surprise foods that you like?

Every time I eat meatloaf I think this. I am just like, "Ewww it smells weird and looks weird". Then I take a bite and bliss.

I did not think I would like asparagus. But baked asparagus rocks.

You mean sashimi, not sushi.

Re: Foods you didn't think you'd like

(Anonymous) 2014-11-02 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I don't. What I'm referring to a piece of raw tuna or salmon or cooked eel atop an oblong ball of rice. Which is sushi. I'm fully aware that there is plenty of sushi that does not have raw fish or indeed any type of seafood on it, but most people see "sushi" and think "raw fish + rice", so that is why I used the term "sushi".

Re: Foods you didn't think you'd like

(Anonymous) 2014-11-03 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Not all sushi contains raw fish, you moron. And you didn't mention rice in your first post so it was easy to assume that you were an ignorant asshat.

Fuck you.

Uh what, raw fish is a pretty typical ingredient in most sushi, and a normal piece of sushi has a big slab of it. If you're going to be a dick at least make sense?

Re: Foods you didn't think you'd like

(Anonymous) 2014-11-03 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I think they were trying to be pedantic about it and failed. Or maybe they missed the point about how a great deal of sushi contains fish, so if you dislike fish, sushi as a whole loses some appeal.

Re: Foods you didn't think you'd like

(Anonymous) 2014-11-03 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's because sushi is commonly mistaken to be referring to raw fish

When I was MUCH younger I used to regard things like hemp hearts, kefir, flax seed etc as dumb hippie food. I absolutely love them now, though.

A lot of the stuff I used to think I didn't care for (asparagus, spinach, turnip, kale, tofu...) was actually the result of it being prepared poorly. These days I have a rule of trying something three times in three ways before deciding I don't care for it.

Very good idea, IMO. I find that most peoples' dislike of vegetables stems from previous bad experiences with improper preparation. Buuuut then you meet people who go ballistic you because OF COURSE they've tried ALL THE VEGETABLES in different ways and still hated them, you food nazi, etc. etc. I shrug and feel sorry for them, because their health will definitely suffer, but eh, what can you do.

Re: Foods you didn't think you'd like

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2014-11-02 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
In my experience, you can encourage them to try them anyway. I have had great success with changing people's dietary habits from what I'd term destructively limited to being able to eat and enjoy a wider range of foods simply through offering a choice of preparations and not being personally offended if they didn't like it.

You can really accomplish a lot if you work with people to find solutions that suit their tastes. Adding spinach to fruit smoothies, for example, is something I often suggest to people who claim they can't stand the taste of anything green.

Hey, it's possible. There's stuff I'll never touch - but then there's stuff I did indeed learn to appreciate because someone prepoared it differently than my mom or grandma used to.

I can't believe I ever disliked broccoli, I don't know what my mom did to the poor vegetable, but it was horrible.

I still think of the "EATING VEGETABLES IS TORTURE TO MEEEEEEEEEE" anon and giggle.

It is torture. It should be illegal under the Geneva Convention.

Deep fried haggis and blackpudding pizza with HP sauce. It comes from Scotland. It would have to.

Blackpudding pizza with Harry Potter sauce? This is some Glaswegian insanity, yes?

Brussel sprouts. I always assumed that they were revolting, and my parents hated them too so they never made me eat them as a kid. Then I tried them a few months ago and loved them! They're surprisingly sweet and tender when you cook them just right.

Also, roe. I actually used to have nightmares where people forced me to eat fish eggs, but then I had a roll topped with tobiko and fell in love.

-Mushrooms. Mostly the idea of eating fungus was creepy to me, and then I found out one of my favorite Chinese food items had mushrooms in it and I never noticed.

-Eggplant. Looks awful, tastes absolutely delicious. Also the fault of Chinese food that I tried it.

I love szechaun eggplant, it's one of my favorite ways to eat it.

A lot of vegetables, because my mom just cooked them to death. I found out I do like them if you prepare them in different ways (or eat them raw). I love broccoli stir-fried for example, and chicory raw but not warm. I found out that though I do not eat tomatoes, I do eat tomato sauce and soup.

Also stuff that my parents disliked - for example anchovies. I found at a later age that I do not share their tastes.

Salmon. Tried it for the first time earlier this year and it's rather good.

Re: Foods you didn't think you'd like

Actually the thing with salmon is very common! Most people come in a sushi restaurant thinking, I hate cooked salmon, so I don't like salmon...and they realize that they actually like it raw, but would never have it cooked! I was like that, and I'm still like that - the very smell of cooked salmon makes me run away, but I could eat it raw forever. I guess it might be because it's very fatty, and a lot of people are turned off by the smell of cooking fat.

Among the other things, I didn't think I'd come to like ginger. The first time I had it I hated it to pieces, then some time later I couldn't have enough.

Bell peppers. As a kid I loved the smell of roasted bell peppers but I hated the flavor, now I like them so much that I eat them almost weekly.

I'm the exact opposite: I like salmon sashimi, but thought I'd never liked it cooked. Loe and behold, I did. It was a lovely discovery.
