I really don't get this. Love the ship all you want, but it isn't canon. Most of my Harry Potter ships are not canon, and I'm okay with that. Canon is canon, you can't change that. This is also very close to the sentiment from the Remus/Sirius fandom that turned my feelings for the ship from disinterest to active dislike.

+1 People who can't shut up about how something is OBVIOUSLY CANON when it isn't actually canon annoys me so much. It's okay to joke about it, and be sort of tongue in cheek, but when you cross that line I just think, go away.

you were turned off by obnoxious remus/sirius shippers but shipped harry/hermione? is it irony or hypocrisy here?

I can totally understand how overbearing shipers can put you off things. However the books don't explicitly state either way and, unlike most OTPs, Remus/Sirius could be seen as a valid interpretation of the canon. Just from an objective pov.

It does piss me off when people insist it is the only interpretation though.

Thank you. Also, I'm so glad yours was the first comment, here. Why the hell does it matter if it's canon, anyway? This attitude like canon is somehow "better" than anything else in fandom makes me scratch my head.

Awww me too OP. <3

(Anonymous) 2014-11-09 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not canon (in the strict sense that, you know, it didn't happen in canon) but it's pretty damn reasonable and plausible. I don't ship it personally but it's in that class of things that just makes a whole lot of sense.

Honestly, who cares if something is canon?

A work has to stand on its own and, funnily enough, if a non-canon ship is written as more compelling than a canon ship, then go for it OP.

An author can say whatever they want about a relationship, but what they say doesn't matter so much as what you see OP. As long as you're not bashing anyone or forcing your opinion as truth on others, go for it.

As an example, Stephenie Meyer can state until the day she dies that Bella and Edward's relationship is loving and healthy but I will never believe her and, because of how she's written it in the books, I will never see that as true.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-09 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
it's stupid to think something that was clearly never ever going to be canon is canon, but you know what, who cares? keep rocking that cute little tinfoil hat, OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-09 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
And I'm one of the apparently 10 people who never saw it, until she came online (and I'm usually having my slashing googles on tight). I always headcanoned Sirius was tragically in love with James for as long as he knew him... but I don't always understand fandom (and at least those two are genuinly friends, unlike Arthur/Eames... another one I just don't get), so you do you I guess. You can think of it as your canon. As long as you don't attack people who don't see it that way, it's fine.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-09 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
While I can totally understand why this is a popular ship, it was never really even hinted at in canon. James appears to have been the star the rest of the group gravitated around. I suppose Sirius and Remus could have had "bonding over our shared grief" sex if not for the part where they spent 12 years not talking to each other while Sirius was going slightly crazy in prison and Remus thought Sirius was directly responsible for the deaths of all his friends.

lemme tell you, i was (sekretly, cheekily) right there with you for the longest of times, babe. i was punch drunk on that kool aid.

that was up until the release of HBP when i started being hardcore disgruntled by the merest mention of remus. then suddenly i adopted a militant anti position. "lmao do u even know what canon means, u fool?!!! it's not even canon by word of god!!!1"

nothing worse than a bitter ex-shipper, tbh.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-09 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I never really get the appeal of the ship. They never seemed that close.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-09 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
From and actually gay person: stop. This isn't fucking cool. Quit it. It's stupid, reeks of delusion and just. No.

You and people like you are the reason why I can't ship certain things and I normally ship everything.

I ship it in sort of a background sense (as in "yeah, I headcanon them as a couple"). It's one of those ships that I don't mind, but never seek out fic for.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-09 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I must have been reading a completely different series as I never read anything like this in my Harry Potter books.

Ship who you want, but it ain't canon.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-10 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
They've been my ship for almost ten years now and it still gives me second hand embarrassment that people like you are running round shouting about canon. I don't understand why some people see it as such a big deal, when it just makes you and other shippers look like morons.

I ship them for life. However I'm completely fine with them being in my fantasy instead of canon.

Greatest OTP of all time. Never mind the text secret, you have made me very happy just by posting it.

[identity profile] mimi-sardinia.livejournal.com 2014-11-10 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
I don't need to say "This is canon!" about anything I ship, all I feel the need to say is "This is my headcanon.".

The difference is, my headcanon is mine and no one has to share it if they have something different.

On Sirius and Remus? I got over them during that period I was in the Transformers fandom and stopped reading human slash. The only slash pairing from pre-TF I've read much of is Voldemort/Harry. All other slash since has been new pairings and my HP reading has gravitated to Hary/Hermione (which I don't feel any problem reading in the face of canon pairings either).

Same. They were one of those 'ship before knowing about shipping' pairings for me.
