Yeah, I keep hearing people explaining away the diminuitive "Missy" as "it's just her cover. She needed to come accross as friendly for her plans to work", but seriously it reeked over a deliberate dismissive attitude about her sex change from the part of the writers. :/

I think, in all fairness, that is an extraordinarily hard line to walk. Like, I almost feel that any objection to Missy can be read that way, regardless of what's actually being said. Unless it actually explicitly includes the text "I AM NOT ANGRY BECAUSE MISSY IS A GIRL NOW I JUST THINK IT'S A BAD PLOT". So it's an extraordinarily difficult conversation to have, I think, further hindered by the fact that DW fandom is basically batshit all the time anyway.

THAT SAID, that has not been my sense of the reaction, personally.

I've been waiting for the backlash as soon as I saw the episode. I think it's a valid point that they only kissed as soon as the Master was a woman, even though there was so much more sexual tension between John Simm Master and the Doctor.

However, still I love the new female Master. I hope to see much fic shipping her with the current doctor. Even though I only usually read slash, I love this pairing immensely. Their scenes were electric.

C'mon ficcers, bring it on!

I mostly agree! I loved John Simm's Master and the Doctor, so I was delighted to see the Master again. The kiss...well, I adored it because I always thought the Master had a massive, unhealthy obsession/fucked up love for the Doctor and the kiss confirmed that in my mind, but I can see why people are upset about it only happening now.

Doctor/Master is the only pairing involving the Doctor that I actually ship, so I hope people get to writing it again. (Or...get to writing more of it; idk if they ever stopped. I haven't read Doctor Who fic in quite some time.)

I agree with you. Even though I knew that Missy was going to be revealed as the Master, I was really, really hoping she'd be the Rani. Not because I object to the gender change, but because I'm just bored of the way they write the Master as so batshit crazy now (I miss him being clever and diabolical). It would've been fun to see someone 'new(old)' - and then we could've had the Master AND the Rani teaming up eventually...

The complaining is depressing and also really funny for me because I think I preferred her to John Simm. I never really liked his Master all that much.

I prefer her to Simm in End of Time. I liked him a lot in Series 3, but End of Time was just awful in general and the Master was the worst of it. I do love Missy, though. She's just so delightful. But honestly, I see some similarities in their portrayals, and those are the things I like best about her. The joy she takes in fooling the Doctor, messing with him, and generally ruining his life.

I've only seen people happy about the regeneration so far. Never seen Time Lords with static genders (I'd say they're not gendered at all but they use "Time Lord" and "Time Lady" thus they have some identities).

However, if the Doctor and Master hooking up became canon now ... well that wouldn't be okay. I don't ship this pair at all, so well ...

Is it even "canon" to begin with? I mean, it's definitely shipping fodder, yes - but that kiss seemed more like a way to get a rise out of him, and fuck with his head than a romantic thing. Especially since his expression is one of complete bafflement and disgust.

Personally, I hated her from the start, before the reveal. Something very unnerving. But it's not the change in gender that bothers me - it's literally the way the actress plays it. And I think it's on purpose. It's like Umbridge - she's awful, but that's the point. So I think the actress is doing a great job because she definitely caused a strong reaction in me, lol.

My issue with Missy isn't about Doctor/Master. Or the fact that the Master regenerated as a woman. It's with the fact that if she was going to be the Master, I would've liked to see her personality much more in line with the Master's of old. John Simm's 'cuckoo for coconuts' routine got old after awhile. Delgado & Ainley's versions were slick and diabolical and didn't rely on that whole 'crazycakes' schtick. I would've loved Missy if she'd been less of a copycat of Simm.

I don't care if she is female or male (or maybe both, can time lords be both genders or none?). When I started the third season, I already knew that the Master would show up at the end. I sort of ended up spoiling myself with this new season because I didn't want to watch it and wait for a week. But even once I found out the reveal, there still didn't feel a "ooh, the master is back!"

I don't think there was enough screen time to show just how much of the master she was. But maybe I don't know enough of DW lore to appreciate her appearance?

As for myself, I wish I was around on reddit for when "Dark Water" aired. When they showed some of the 'skeletons' in the mausoleum, one of the name plates was a something Jones. And my first thought was, could that have been a dig at Ianto Jones? So Ianto is now a cyberman!! (Who has now killed himself twice.)

What pissed me off about that episode was when the Doctor made an implicit offer to Osgood (nerdy bespectacled Doctor fangirl) for her to be his new companion. The instant he said that, I knew she was going to die, because obviously they weren't going to let her be a companion.

And the fact that that was so obvious makes me think about WHY it's obvious, and that pisses me right off.
