Re: Fanartists, at least, are attention whores when they do this IMO
(Anonymous) 2014-12-05 04:19 am (UTC)(link)you know absolutely nothing about the entertainment arts industry and it's almost laughable.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-06 12:17 am (UTC)(link)But yeah, I do feel legitimate disgust with people who are in science because they want to be famous and have everyone admire them for how smart they are. I don't care who you are -- your research is all that matters.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-06 01:20 am (UTC)(link)I didn't say I'd be okay with other people getting my grant money because I kind of need that to feed myself. But if I could get a position with secure funding, I have to be honest and say that I wouldn't care if my name was attached to my research as long as I could keep doing it. Not going to lie about that.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-07 01:37 am (UTC)(link)I'd say it's normal and human to want recognition for your work, and selfless beyond sanity to be willing to toil for decades, in some cases, yet not mind if someone else receives the credit for your accomplishment. If you're so high-minded that you truly don't care, fine for you, but don't decide that people who feel differently are all narcissists.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-05 12:44 pm (UTC)(link)even putting aside commissions for fanart, people have gotten jobs with portfolios full of fanart, actual original work jobs. your saying "you can't build a career off fanart!" is naive and again, shows how very little you know about how the art industry works. do you think a concept artist's portfolio is not going to be full of Star Wars fanart? a comic book artist's portfolio not going to be filled with sketches of Batman? an animator's portfolio not filled with character designs of their take on Adventure Time? people get paying work with portfolios full of "someone else's intellectual property," but it's the talent that carries them.
everyone in this industry is piggybacking off of each other and you're so off the mark it's just astounding. take your moral outrage elsewhere because it's severely misplaced. a walkthrough an animator's office might send you into convulsions.
Re: Fanartists, at least, are attention whores when they do this IMO
(Anonymous) 2014-12-05 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)There is a certain famous comic book artist on facebook who held a contest for followers to redraw designs for his ORIGINAL character. He ended up picking one that gave him a bunch of different versions which he liked because they made the character look updated while staying true to his personality in spirit. Now this artist may get a job from said comic book creator as a result of this, or he may use it as part of his portfolio. This is one example of how someone may base their career off of something like fanart. Fanart is an expression of your love for their work, it is not merchandise you are selling en masse to the public. In fact many people find fanart flattering.
Getting a job working for a company because of your artistic skill and starting your own business in an attempt to get a piece of the pie for yourself are two vastly different things.
