eh, his sexuality was revealed in interviews. who cares if you want to ship him with McGonagall?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-12 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
well, judging by the thread about shipping gay characters in straight relationships a little while back, the answer is "A hell of a lot of people, very much"

Platonic OTP for the win.

And you know, the two of them struck me as close colleagues with a strong bond of mutual respect. So in that sense I shipped them, too.

This just in: people should stop having sex at...eh, fifty? After that it is just gross. STOP IT.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-12 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
People can keep having sex if they want, but I don't want to picture it in my fanfics, personally.

I can't tell if this comment is being facetious or not.

Feeling self-righteous today, Anon?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-12 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Come on, I mean, obviously older people have sex, but it's perfectly okay to not find that hot and not feel like writing it. No one actually thinks old people stop having sex.

What do you care? They're not having sex with you.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-12 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Man, I get you. I think it's so stupid when I see sentiments like that.

Can't agree, Johnny Depp is 51.

If Dumbledore was some kind of gay icon, maybe the erasure would be an issue, but since there's nothing in the canon about his sexuality besides the vaguest of hints that everyone missed so thoroughly that the author had to explain it after the series was finished . . . ship what you want, and don't feel bad.

Canon sexuality has been an issue for shipping for all of... never. You're fine. I see how it could step on some toes to claim it's canon, or that Dumbledore shouldn't be gay or whatever. Of course the SJWs will whine, but they'll whine no matter what.

Is this secret me? On the one hand, I've also shipped since book one and I don't consider the interviews canon. On the other hand, it still feels like gay erasure. I've mostly decided that in my mind he's either "straight for her" or mostly attracted to men but somewhat bi. I did come out of book 7 shipping Dumbledore/Grindewald before the interview, so I'm mostly content to enjoy both ships.

Most ships only work if you ignore canon reality. You're fine.

You could always pull a "homosexual and biromantic" if you want to avoid accusations of gay erasure and mental images that may be a bit unpleasant

ultimately i don't see what the big deal is. most of the people whining about representation in the HP fandom and shit are straight women who are still ass sore over charlie weasley or remus lupin not being gay, so go ahead and do your thing. it's not like anyone really gives a fuck about dumbledore being sexual or romantic anyway.

Kind of OT, but...

(Anonymous) 2014-12-12 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I do love how of all the characters fandom made gay (whether with canon in mind or not), Dumbledore is the one canon character no one ever wrote as gay when he was.

Although I read on TV Tropes that Seamus and Dean were supposed to be, but that's the only source I've seen for it so I dunno.

JKR didn't have the balls to make him gay in canon, so do what you like with him, I say.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-12 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Same here, OP. I've shipped Dumbledore/McGonagall since Book One, too. But my happy little fics stay in my head because thanks to HP fandom being so wanky back in the day, I don't want to start any OMG GAY ERASURE fires burning again.

(Personally, I have no problem headcanoning Dumbledore as bi. Bisexuals exist, dangit!)

(Anonymous) 2014-12-12 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Maggie Smith is that way for me. I love her with Isobel on Downton Abbey. Bring me all the fic, dammit. Violet/Isobel all the way and on the subject of mature pairings, Hughes/Carson, dammit. Screw the haters.

It's not like you knew when you started shipping it. (I know a few people who have never quite managed to stop shipping Luke and Leia for exactly that reason.)

Definitely.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-12 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
They're my ship, too. I just amended it when I read about his bf to add his bf as his young, lost love.

Way late but I just wanted to say FUCK YEAH, it's not just me! When I read the first book as a kid, I somehow assumed they were actually married and McGonagall had just kept her own name, and the headcanon persisted until JKR revealed more in interviews and on Pottermore. (I'm still irrationally disappointed about it.)
