I don't really understand the strength of the reactions. I'm not obsessed with Cumberbatch, but he's a fairly good actor who has shown that he has a fairly good range. Isn't that what counts? Other than that, I say just wait and see. If he does bad fine. But I honestly don't get reacting to castings before you see the person. Given how many times the mass bad reaction to a casting has turned out to be wrong, you'd think people would have learned by now.

Marvel hasn't failed me yet when it comes to casting.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-12 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I keep reminding myself that. Well, aside from Bautista in GotG, he was terrible.

Really? I loved him.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-13 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
Wow okay your opinion is obviously worthless.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-13 10:56 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, I liked Bautista. Plus Pro-wrestling nostalgia.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-12 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I just feel like in my case it's overexposure. I'm tired of seeing him in everything. Yes, he's a great actor, but I'd just like a fresh face.

I don't get this at all. The only thing I can recall him being in (that you see a lot of) is Sherlock. Maybe The Hobbit but he is a dragon on there.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-12 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Sherlock
The Hobbit
Star Trek Into Darkness
And now MCU

PLUS there's rumors he's going to be in Star Wars (he visited the set for example)

Ah, I think my problem is that I tended to see a lot of Cumberbatch because I liked him and he took roles I liked. So maybe he seems overexposed.

But as an actor, he's not going to be in charge of the film's direction. So it may be a treatment that serves neither him nor the character well.

12 Years A Slave and Star Trek: Into Darkness come to mind.

I was already worried about the possibility of the movie taking the character of Strange in a way that seems really easy but also totally wrong - down the path of the dickbag arrogant protagonist who is intense and strange and argues with everyone about everything.

The fact that they've cast someone who is most famous for literally playing that exact character doesn't do much to assuage my worries.

It's not that I doubt Cumberbatch's acting talent. I'm worried about it what it implies for the producers' vision for the movie.

Good answer.

Okay, I get this. I don't know much about Strange. And I will say that this is similar to the way I've reacted to the casting of Gadot as Wonder Woman. I'm willing to give the movie a chance, but I think the casting choice says a lot of about the priorities of those making the movie and leaves me skeptical as to whether they can pull off the character.

Hmm, I can see this.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-12 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
THIIIIIIIIIS.

Literally the ACTUAL SECRET ORIGIN of Doctor Strange is that he learns humility, and humanity, and can admit how much he doesn't know.

Can you picture Bafflegab Clusterfuck playing that? Yeah, neither can I.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-12 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I can. 12 Years A Slave. War Horse. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Stuart: A Life Backwards. Oddly enough he has been in stuff other than Sherlock

I can. He's an actor, and he acts.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-12 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
-1 for not knowing what an actor's job is

-1 for the utterly played-out "let's make fun of his name" shit. It doesn't bolster your argument and makes you kind of look like an idiot.

Yeah, this is exactly my worry for the film as well, it's nothing against Cumberbatch himself(I don't like or hate him as an actor) but I am worried that they'll be going for major douchecanoe Strange(and while that's not an unreasonable take since Strange can be a massive ass it's not one I'm really wanting).

But I'm holding any reservations about it until we get the first trailers for it because atm anything goes.

I will admit to being one of the people who's not happy about this, but I don't think my reaction can be right or wrong. I just have an aversion to Cumberbatch because of my hate for BBC's Sherlock and he's not the type I'd prefer to see in the role (though I do like his voice so I'm fine with him as Smaug). I'm not saying it's going to be terrible, but I'm disappointed and I'll still be disappointed even if he puts in a good performance. I just find the idea of proving this sort of reaction wrong to be odd.

Cumberbatch is a good actor who looks nothing like Doctor Strange. Considering how good the MCU has been up to this point with casting lesser known (or at least not wildly famous, with few exceptions) actors who look like their comics counterparts, it really makes me feel like the casting decision wasn't made on the basis of the character at all.

And for more shallow reasons, I'm sick of his fans. They're the reason I left Star Trek fandom, and they very well might be the reason I leave MCU fandom.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-12 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
He plays the same person over and over? That isn't good acting.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-12 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
When the majority of actors, for tv or movies, do exactly the same I don't know why it's such a surprise. It's rare now for actors to become their characters to the extent that I no longer see the actor reciting the lines they've been given.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-12 12:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, that is good acting that has unfortunately lead to typecasting. Look at Martin Freeman - same thing: People keep whining he can't act but he is always, always cast for "English Everyman" roles. There are only so many ways you can play the "English Everyman" type of character.
