No OP no, don't try to learn to draw from "how to draw anime" stuff. You'll regret it and unlearning that shit is like trying to leave a cult.

Seconding this. I made the mistake of trying to learn from those at a young age, and it messed me up well until I finally got around to taking life drawing classes.

Thiiiiis. I'm still trying to work out all the bad habits.

Wow, I had like 4 of those books in the first series on the left, and had forgotten all about them until this moment. Luckily, I never put much stock in their advice/practiced how to draw like that. I think I bought one because it had a chapter on armor/fantasy stuff and then someone gave me the others based on my purchase.

Haha I have those books, oh young-child-me. They're entertaining, but they're not art bibles. I don't think any one book is a single great resources, the work best when you check out lots of things and incorporate into your repertoire?

Try things like this as a start tho:

Get into the Seinen manga section (no, not the moe-filled seinen, the other seinen). These manga show a varying degree of realism and diversity in character designs that lean onto the more realistic side and don't shy to show imperfections or ugliness. From personal experience, studying their art helped me a great lot to improve. Maybe that's helpful to you too. Good luck!

For starters, try Hiroaki Samura's 'Blade of the Immortal (Mugen no Jūnin)' or Takehiko Inoue's 'Vagabond' or, for a modern setting, 'REAL'. There are many more wonderful artists to discover, but these are my heroes.

Take life drawing classes. Draw those around you in real life. Ask your friends to sit for you or go out to busy shopping streets and draw, draw, draw.

You'll find your style eventually.

Those books look pretty terrible.

Yeah...this is a big part of the reason I just gave up developing a manga/anime style and went in my own direction. That stuff has its place, but it just wasn't with my art.

And honestly? Just forget the how-to books. They're fun and package everything up with a nice little bow on top, but they will never beat practice, practice, practice, drawing from life, practice, doodling, playing with other media and styles, practice, and using reference images to inspire you. If you really want references for certain styles, then go out and find images with those styles. Do a Google search and bookmark or save those pictures that show what you like. 90% of the pictures on my computer and bookmarks in Firefox are exactly that, reference images for just about everything I draw. And if you're able, attend some art classes. Some are better than others, but even if you go to one that sucks, you'll be learning what you don't like, which can be every bit as important when developing your art!

You may find that your characters, or your style, will just never translate to anime/manga, and that's okay. Or you may find that you fall in love with anime/manga, and that's okay too. Just be careful of pigeon-holing yourself with the how-to manuals. It's very hard to break out of pigeon-holes, and it's very hard to add stuff into them.

Urghh, those books are horrible. You have to be very careful with "how to draw anime" books. Some are good, some are crap peddling something that looks like cheap anime knockoff, and some are legit terrifying, and only really good if you want to scare yourself.

I know a handful of decent books.

Mastering Manga With Mark Crilley is pretty good

Also the Shojo Fashion Manga Art School series is surprisingly awesome.

these books do nothing but hinder you. draw from life, develop a style over time.

Draw from life and study the people who inspire you, to see what works and what doesn't. Look for tutorials on EVERYTHING, not just those. I draw in a manga inspired style, but one of my greatest influences was a tutorial series called "Manga to realistic", and another is El Goonish Shive. (JA's tutorials at sailorenergy.net are good too!).
google "figure gesture drawing".
and read these books in the bookshop before buying and only buy if you think they actually will be useful (hint, likely not, but some art books are gems).
edit: and at least one of the authors in the image is embarrased the book was published. She was 16 at the time.

If you don't mind using tumblr, it's a pretty good resource for things like this.

Deviantart as well has a lot of great refs. Justt look up Art reference / Art ref and so on and you'll find hundreds to sort through.

I really recommend Scott McCloud's book Making Comics. It has a whole chapter that dissects how to create believable characters and how to get them to emote properly. One of the key concepts McCloud teaches is that all characters should have their very own unique intellectual, emotional, and visual turf, so that they don't all act or look the same to the reader. There are examples in the book so that you may follow this idea very easily. A real must read.

tbh, it's better to just to study and copy manga/anime styles you like than go for a how to draw manga book.

also supplement it with some traditional studies (life drawing and all that jazz) as drawing manga only with limit you some, especially on imaging things in a 3D space and you'll probably end up picking up shortcomings the artists you copy have so seeing how things operate in 3DPG will help you avoid that

Mark Crilley author of the Akiko Books wrote two books on manga.

"Mastering Manga" & "Mastering Manga 2 Level Up with Mark Crilley"

He also has two manga inspired series out. "Miki Falls" 4 books & "Brody's Ghost" 6 books (He just finished book 6 so the last book in that series should be available soon.

He also does How to Draw Videos on Youtube. From manga to realism

I would kill for a How To Draw Bara book.

Hint: I wouldn't use it to draw anything.
