Do whatever you enjoy, though I have to wonder why do you play games instead of consuming other kind of media.

I'm not trying to cause wank, it's just... game are expensive and if you just want to enjoy stories/characters aren't other mediums a better (or at least cheaper) option?

Probably for the same reason people play Candy Crush and Tetris.

Is it supposed to not be fun to play an easy game? I don't get the logic.

Speaking as someone who just inherited a used PS3 & has started playing around w/ BioShock, my reason for doing it is that I've been hearing friends talk about it & they seem to have fun, so I figured I'd try it out & see what I'm missing.

Games can be more fun than other media because they're interactive.

Personally, I'll accept worse writing in games because the interaction makes the characters ad storyline ten times more engaging.

Anyway, games can be incredibly cheap. Cost your average rpg at money spent per hour of enjoyment and it's a way cheaper medium than most books or movies. I bought Fire Emblem: Awakening for £40 and have had over 250 hours out of it already. That's 16 pence an hour. You wouldn't get anything near that value from most other forms of entertainment. It's even better value if you get your games second hand or share them with others. Even going to the library to take out books for free involves the cost of transport, so would come out more expensive.

Games can be expensive, but they can also be fairly cheap if you're willing to wait for sales rather than purchasing a game right when it's released. For example, I bought the Tomb Raider reboot for $4.00 (and most of time I pay $15.00 or less for games).

Also, while I can't speak for the OP, for me personally, playing through a story in a game feels very different from experiencing a story through other types of media. There's a more a visceral connection to the world and the characters, even when playing on Easy (although I tend to prefer harder settings myself, but that's my own preference).

In general, different types of media have different "feels" to them. Each uses different methods of storytelling, and so they can connect to us in different ways, even when telling what appears, on the surface, to be the same exact tale.

I win, I bought the Team Raider reboot for $2.00!

I love Steam.

Dammit, clearly I should've waited longer.

And Steam is, indeed, awesome.

oh no, this wasn't recent. I got it maybe a month ago on a Daily Deal. It probably didn't go below $4 on the Winter Sale.

for me personally games are interactive enough to keep me engaged i have ADD so i get easily distracted when watching tv. i like reading but have to take frequent (but short) breaks when i find myself losing focus. i prefer games to most other media because i can stay absorbed for longer than 20 mins at a time.

Game stories tend to engage me more.

I do play a LOT of freeware games and want to make some. Cost isn't exactly an argument when the cost is £0.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-30 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Why would you wonder about preferring games? They present just a good a story as books or movies.

Games are expensive only if you buy a lot of them brand new.

When I first bought an xbox and a couple of used games, my bank account shot up by thousand dollars over the following months because I spent that time playing games instead of going out or buying new books and going to movies all the time.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-30 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Movies, now there's an expensive medium. I think they've become a lot more expensive than they used to be.

I admit to spending far too much on books. When I bought a console last year, my bank balance also went up. Games are cheaper than they seem at first, even compared to second hand books.

Movies are HELLA expensive.

This is one reason I don't go to the movies often (I don't think I've been in more than a year). Why spend $10 on a movie ticket that will entertain me for three hours when I could spend that $10 on a game that could potentially entertain me for 10, 20, 50, or even 100+ hours?

AYRT

Because many other mediums present good stories?

I have been reading the answers so far and I see many people who enjoy games for one reason or another that is related to the medium (interactivity and so on), but if OP cares mostly about story and characters, why games and not something else?

And no, games are one of the most expensive hobbies (unless we're talking about free games).
Even if you do get the games on sale, which can make them even cheap if you're in the right country, otherwise they end as just "less expensive", the price of most modern consoles rarely goes down that much and a PC with the right specs for gaming can be pretty expensive too.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-30 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
If OP cares about a game's story and characters, they're going to want to experience that particular story and characters. Other mediums present good stories, but they may not be the stories that the OP wants to partake in at this exact moment? If I'm playing The Last Of Us because I'm interested in or care about the characters, dropping the game and watching The Walking Dead instead isn't going to scratch my itch.

+ interactivity plays a huge role in how you experience a character or story...

(Anonymous) 2014-12-30 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
Because there's something about the format they like. Because video games present stories and characters in a different way than other media.

Because fuck, they just LIKE it. Why do you need a justification for someone liking something?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-30 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Well, sorry for asking. Next time I'll remember to shut-up, because how dare I to wonder about something that makes not sense for me.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-30 02:05 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not that you wondered about it, it's that you acted like the reasons people gave weren't good enough and started talking like there was something wrong with it.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-30 09:11 am (UTC)(link)
I find some games (mostly rpg types) to be more engaging than book series, and in a way it's almost like an anime too. It's like three genres wrapped into one for me, and that's the appeal for me. And I like it because like some others have said, I can't always get into a book or anime but I can get into a game. I guess with some games you could always opt out of the common route if you hated it and go bad route, etc. So it's customizable. Unlike where some mediums there is not that kind of option, save for fandom works if you don't like the ending or end OTP.

Also unless you're one of those gamers that has to have the new stuff right away it can be cheap. I know I used to wait for used, and Game Stop sales on the used stuff (BOGO, etc). I thinking specs on laptops has gotten better where you can spend $500 and get a decent laptop to play stuff on. Only hardcore gamers are blowing $1000+ for specialized gaming laptops anymore.

Any hobby can get expensive, and there are a lot more expensive than gaming. I was blowing $100 a month at one point on books. My friend got into photography and was blowing thousands a month on equipment and a dark room.

easy doesn't mean no challenge or progression whatsoever, though. Games are an interactive experience. There is no alternative medium for exploring skyrim, and someone who plays on easy wouldn't have a notably different experience than I did on expert. I don't know if difficulty is really a selling point of games at all. I think current trends in the big game studios would support me there?

this is a good explanation.

Nothing allows you to explore a world quite like a game. With a game like Skyrim you can do it pretty much completely on your own terms and play it however you want. Other media can't give you that.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-30 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
It could also be a matter of time. People with jobs or children aren't going to have the time that a 15 year old ~hardcore~ gamer can to "git gud," as it were. Now that I'm in grad school, I find that I prefer games with lower difficulties that I can jump right back into after months of not playing, and I know it has nothing to do with my gender, so I don't need to feel bad about it. When the dudebros grow up, they'll understand.

Yikes.
