(Anonymous) 2014-12-30 12:48 am (UTC)(link)I'm not trying to cause wank, it's just... game are expensive and if you just want to enjoy stories/characters aren't other mediums a better (or at least cheaper) option?

Speaking as someone who just inherited a used PS3 & has started playing around w/ BioShock, my reason for doing it is that I've been hearing friends talk about it & they seem to have fun, so I figured I'd try it out & see what I'm missing.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-30 01:11 am (UTC)(link)Personally, I'll accept worse writing in games because the interaction makes the characters ad storyline ten times more engaging.
Anyway, games can be incredibly cheap. Cost your average rpg at money spent per hour of enjoyment and it's a way cheaper medium than most books or movies. I bought Fire Emblem: Awakening for £40 and have had over 250 hours out of it already. That's 16 pence an hour. You wouldn't get anything near that value from most other forms of entertainment. It's even better value if you get your games second hand or share them with others. Even going to the library to take out books for free involves the cost of transport, so would come out more expensive.

Also, while I can't speak for the OP, for me personally, playing through a story in a game feels very different from experiencing a story through other types of media. There's a more a visceral connection to the world and the characters, even when playing on Easy (although I tend to prefer harder settings myself, but that's my own preference).
In general, different types of media have different "feels" to them. Each uses different methods of storytelling, and so they can connect to us in different ways, even when telling what appears, on the surface, to be the same exact tale.

And Steam is, indeed, awesome.

I do play a LOT of freeware games and want to make some. Cost isn't exactly an argument when the cost is £0.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-30 01:37 am (UTC)(link)Games are expensive only if you buy a lot of them brand new.
When I first bought an xbox and a couple of used games, my bank account shot up by thousand dollars over the following months because I spent that time playing games instead of going out or buying new books and going to movies all the time.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-30 01:46 am (UTC)(link)I admit to spending far too much on books. When I bought a console last year, my bank balance also went up. Games are cheaper than they seem at first, even compared to second hand books.

This is one reason I don't go to the movies often (I don't think I've been in more than a year). Why spend $10 on a movie ticket that will entertain me for three hours when I could spend that $10 on a game that could potentially entertain me for 10, 20, 50, or even 100+ hours?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-30 02:40 am (UTC)(link)Because many other mediums present good stories?
I have been reading the answers so far and I see many people who enjoy games for one reason or another that is related to the medium (interactivity and so on), but if OP cares mostly about story and characters, why games and not something else?
And no, games are one of the most expensive hobbies (unless we're talking about free games).
Even if you do get the games on sale, which can make them even cheap
if you're in the right country, otherwise they end as just "less expensive", the price of most modern consoles rarely goes down that much and a PC with the right specs for gaming can be pretty expensive too.no subject
(Anonymous) 2014-12-30 03:57 am (UTC)(link)+ interactivity plays a huge role in how you experience a character or story...

(Anonymous) 2014-12-30 05:14 am (UTC)(link)Because fuck, they just LIKE it. Why do you need a justification for someone liking something?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-30 09:11 am (UTC)(link)Also unless you're one of those gamers that has to have the new stuff right away it can be cheap. I know I used to wait for used, and Game Stop sales on the used stuff (BOGO, etc). I thinking specs on laptops has gotten better where you can spend $500 and get a decent laptop to play stuff on. Only hardcore gamers are blowing $1000+ for specialized gaming laptops anymore.
Any hobby can get expensive, and there are a lot more expensive than gaming. I was blowing $100 a month at one point on books. My friend got into photography and was blowing thousands a month on equipment and a dark room.

Nothing allows you to explore a world quite like a game. With a game like Skyrim you can do it pretty much completely on your own terms and play it however you want. Other media can't give you that.
