Went out with an old friend who I really like and would like to maybe date in the future.

A few minutes after we sat down, this jerk comes over from his table and addresses me without looking at my friend:

"I hope you know you can do much better than him. You're very sexy."

I didn't even have a response. I was just in shock.
My friend was very quiet after that, and as we were leaving he asked if I was going to get jerk guy's number. So much nope.

I kind of think that telling someone "you can do so much better" is really rude and annoying. I know in some people's heads it may sound all "noble" and "I have confidence in you" or something. But when it comes out its "I don't think this person is 'good enough' and who cares how YOU may feel about him". If that makes sense. But yeah , it's not as flattering as the people who say it like to think it is. Even when it comes from people we know.

This sounds suspiciously like some PUA shit. That crowd thinks that by doing asshole stuff and establishing themselves as the "alpha" (i.e. by putting down other males around you and making them "betas"), your panties will spontaneously combust. Feel free to tell those guys it's rude to interrupt adult conversation and to fuck off back to the kids' table until he learns some manners. Sadly, it's the only way they'll learn.

I'm weirdly flattered. It's not really an epic love story. We were friends when we were young (5-15) then we lost touch for ~8 years because he changed schools. Ran into each other in a local bar on Christmas Eve. Talked nearly every day since.

I'm pretty sure I've totally regressed to that horrible crush I had on him when I was a kid.
