Pet Peeves

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-01-10 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Have not done one of these in a while! But I am currently riding in a car with someone who won't stop flipping thru songs on the radio. This is made even worse every time they stop on a song to listen to like one verse before changing it. Makes me want to take a fork to their hand.

What are some pet peeves that make you want to pull out your hair or someone else's?

Whistling. I don't know why but I can't stand whistling in any context.

Whistling can be a very annoying sound! Especially depending on the whistler.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-11 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mind whistling when it's a tune, I hate it when the whistler is just trilling random notes.

Kids in college writing classes who think sex/drug/alcohol/F bombs make them uber edgy!!!

Actually haven't had this problem since graduating, thank God, but I was backreading LJ entries and came across one complaining about this. I was unfortunate enough to be in a class where every other student's mission seemed to be "write the dirtiest, sexist thing you can think of." To make things worse, my professor went along with it. (No idea why.)

Fortunately for most of those students, it is just a phase.

People who talk during previews at movies. I know this isn't completely rational, since it's not technically the actual movie, but sometimes I actually want to watch the trailers.

Similarly, people who make loud comments about how they read the book of the movie and it sucked or whatever. Even if you're right, let fans in the audience have their moment. Having to watch Kristen Stewart's face for two minutes won't kill you. It might make you sad, but it won't kill you.

I chat during previews because previews are almost always hilarious. I can't help it.

I know! I LOVE previews. There were a lot of good ones before The Hobbit.

What movie are you talking about? I can't think of anything Kristen Stewart was only in for a bit.

Ugh, I hate that. Most the time I don't like the trailers either, but someone bitching about the trailer loud enough that everyone can hear isn't any better.

(Someone was doing this today. Thankfully one of their family members asked them to shut up, lol.)

I hate previews. If I wanted to watch a lot of commercials I'd stay home and watch TV. Also, they're almost always for movies I'd never want to see.

People who join fan comms and then complain about spoilers in comments or behind flock.

It's one thing if the show just aired or the book came out, but this is probably part of why you can't find discussion on LJ anymore. People are afraid of being accused of spoiling. Why not just not go to a comm if you haven't read the latest book or seen the latest episode? I haven't seen the last five or so DW episodes - I'm not going to go to a community and expect no one to be talking about it.

Don't most comms have a section just FOR spoilers (or spoiler-free talk)?

When people flake out on plans and wait till the last possible minute to tell you. Emergencies don't count because those come up sometimes. What I'm talking about is calling them up to find out where they are and they go "Oh, I just didn't feel like it" or "I'm out doing X instead. Have fun!"

I had a coworker like that. We won't set up this weekend long camping trip only for her to cancel like...15 minutes after she got there. She left it so last minute she showed up!

People looking over my shoulder at either my computer screen or a book I happen to be reading, drives me mad.

Oh and people flicking through the TV channels during advert breaks, just leave it where it was! We're watching the show that's on anyway and I'd rather put up with shitty adverts, or get a drink during them, than potentially miss something on the show.

People who feel the need to be judgie on my pet choices.

i.e. "why would you have a rabbit, rabbits are boring" or "why would you want a mutt/staffie/kelpie you should get a beagle/lab/retriever/terrier/spaniel"

1. I don't give a fuck if you think rabbits are boring
2. I don't give a fuck about what breeds you like
3. Seriously why the fuck does what you think matter fucking fuck off

Seriously, what the fuck with thinking I should get something OTHER people like when it's for ME. How many times do I have to repeat myself and no your opinion is fucking shit and not valid because these are MY pets and what you think makes a good pet doesn't matter for SQUAT.

And this is why my best friend isn't a best friend anymore even if she doesn't realise it

tl;dr people telling me they don't like the things i like therefore i shouldn't have what I like?

When the hallway light is turned off at my workplace. I work on the second floor of a building carved out of freakin' concrete cinderblocks practically, and the windows aren't very. So it's a tomb sometimes, and I have a hard time staying on task when it's cloudy outside, it gets so gloomy. So the lights being on are a big deal to me. And yet, my former boss and this sycophant who works on the far side of the second floor keep turning the lights in the hall off when they come through. I have too much affection for my former boss so I just say something snarky and make a point of turning them back on. The sycophant, otoh, is only doing it because he's a suck up and HIM I want to push out a window. It especially irritates me because he has to turn down another corridor to get to his office so it's not like the lights are affecting him in any way shape or form.

Also it bugs me when I'm served something in a restaurant and my food is touching.

People who try to talk to me or get my attention when I'm talking on the phone. This guy at my work does this A LOT and I want to punch him every time he tries greeting me or tries to say something when I'm in the middle of a conversation on the phone. Once, I was returning from break and I was actually in the middle of a discussion with my best friend on my cell about a dream he had about his father, who passed away a few years ago, and this guy walked up to me and stood way too close to me (another pet peeve) and asked me a stupid question. I just gave him a dirty ass look, and the dude still wasn't getting the clue that I was ON THE PHONE and not talking to him. I literally had to walk away from my desk.

I also feel my skin crawl when I see people chewing loudly and/or with their mouths open.

This is really petty, but when someone asks you what you want (e.g. for your birthday) and then gets you something slightly related that they think would be better. Just -- if you're going to get me something different anyway, then why bother asking if I have a preference?

People interrupting, talking over, or not allowing me to get a word in edgewise (especially if they ask a question or otherwise say something which prompts a response, then go on before I can give them one.) Manners, they're a thing.

What really sucks is that my husband's entire family is notorious for just babbling on and expecting whoever they're talking to to interrupt if they want to say something.

My sister talking to me when I have my earphones in. She does it constantly. I'm on my laptop, earphones are in so I'm most likely listening to music or watching something.

Teachers who leave things to the last minute (that'd be 95% of them) and expect me to pull what they need out of my ass for them; I'm a library tech. I need a sign I can hold up that says "Lack of planning on your part does not constitute and emergency on my part."

Computer techs who use the excuse "that's how the other Tech Guy set it up" because they're too fucking lazy to fix the actual problem. (I have three techs, one at each of the schools I work at, and two of them are very much like this--and I do like and appreciate them for the most part. However, my third tech is much more awesome than the other two for many reasons, not limited to the fact he'll fix things for me...and gets me shit for free).

Interrupted by a phone call

(Anonymous) 2015-01-11 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
When a salesperson/cashier/help desk person answers the phone while dealing with me when there is someone else there who can take the call. I mean, I get that potential sales are important and that if phones don't get answered, you can lose business, but dealing with the sale or question right in front of you, also pretty important.

People who are snobs about driving a car with manual transmission.

People who chew tobacco. The sound of them spitting just makes me want to puke.

Tenants who grill on the roof (which actually is specifically prohibited by their lease) and store their charcoal briquettes and lighter fluid in the alcove right next to the fire exit. Also when they clutter up the roof with garbage bags. The dumpster is right downstairs, people!
