I'm really surprised at people complaining about friend locking. I loved friend locking - it was the only thing that kept me from deleting my entire journal for fear of someone being offended at something I'd said. I only left my posts open to people I trusted. The lack of friend lock on Tumblr is the reason I'm not there.

This.

I friendlock all of my journal these days.

I left some of my posts open - generic stuff such as fic recs and such. But yeah, 90% of it was friend-locked. I tried Tumblr but I just felt so exposed - lol. :)

It was really frustrating clicking a link into what seemed like a really great fic or meta post, and discovering that the post was friend-locked.

While I get that (although I don't quite understand why friend-locked stuff would be publicly linked), most of my friends friend-locked a lot of their meta or show commentary, especially if it was negative or more controversial, to avoid the risk of being dog piled if it got discovered or linked in the wrong place. Tumblr has no such protections.

To be more specific, the problem with being linked to a f-locked post isn't that the post is f-locked but that someone thought it would be a good idea to link to it. In other words - it's a user problem, not a platform problem.

Agreed.

I think sometimes the case was also that someone would link to a lj post, which then became friend-locked later.

NAYRT

This was often the case.

I was randomly browsing old Fandom Wank entries the other day, and most of the links that went to LJ from those entries were now flocked.

Posts that were locked after-the-fact, usually because of traffic or wank, is basically the same thing as deleting a Tumblr post. The only difference (and privacy issue) is that reblogs stay even when the original is gone, which isn't the case when you block access to a journal entry.

Did that happen often for personal reasons or was it just more marketing shit (as mentioned in other parts of the thread)?

I think mostly what I saw in posts getting locked after the fact was cases where people would make a post, it would attract wank, and then it would get locked, because the OP didn't want to deal with it.

I know of cases where people would go back and retroactively lock their episode reactions/reviews because they'd unexpectedly had an influx of new followers and didn't want to deal with people arguing with them about their feelings about the show in question.

Man, that sounds like a pain. People ruining a nice thing are annoying. :(
