Uhhh. I don't really know how to respond to this. I guess I always found him a completely ridiculous, awful jerk, but I also kind of think that's exactly why he's funny? In combination with De Lancie being really good at playing that part. It's like if God was a complete jackass. That's the whole joke of Q.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
"It's like if God was a complete jackass."

I dunno. How many people does Q kill over the course of the show compared to God? Q's a jackass, but he's more bad reputation than actual crappy deeds.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I guess I'm using the term less to denote evil, and more to refer to the ridiculous pettiness, and the arbitrary, whimsical, random annoying crap that Q does.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. But God once killed a good, righteous man's entire family, decimated his wealth and afflicted him with gross oozing sores just because Satan dared him to. It's the Book of Job. That's not even counting the time he destroyed the whole world-- animals, babies included-- with a giant flood except for one dude's family. Or that time he struck Egypt with diseases and plagues that killed all the Egyptian firstborn children and animals just to show Pharaoh that Moses meant serious business.

Q's annoying. But if Q was an asshole version of God, I suspect he'd be a lot more than simply a thorn in the Enterprise crew's side.

Didn't he get some people killed by introducing Picard to the Borg? (Granted, this also served as preparation for the Borg's arrival . . .)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Q said he was giving the Federation time to prepare, but it's also possible that the Q-initiated interaction is what brought the Federation to the Borg's attention in the first place.

I guess I always found him a completely ridiculous, awful jerk, but I also kind of think that's exactly why he's funny?

I agree at this...I enjoy Q episodes, but I don't like Q...I like seeing how the crews respond to the chaos he causes and usually outwit him.

One of my favorite Q moments was 'You hit me! Jean-Luc never hit me!' Q's just so much a petulant child, and it's hilarious.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Only thing I remember from an otherwise rather tedious tie-in novel was Picard saying, "If I recall Captain Sisko's report, he said he punched you in the face and you never came back." *thoughtfully looks at own fist*

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
idk it's not like the narrative plays him up or he wins all the time? You can enjoy Our Heroes undergoing difficulties and being frustrated and annoyed, it doesn't mean you're going 'o wow I love this asshole, jerks are so cool!!1 down with those Enterprise squares'

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, Q is like Ayn Rand.

At least Q is funny.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I never really cared for Q, though his character definitely changes during the Voyager run. I dislike the way he plays with the Enterprise in his original stories, and I thought the view into the Q during Voyager was rather dismal and sad.

BUT, I did grow to like him a little more as I grew up and could view him as a "fun" antagonist and separate myself from how he was upsetting/infuriating the crew I liked. I still wouldn't say he's a favorite and I'd never seek out his episodes but I don't mind him as much any more. That also might be because of how he developed during Voyager.

Wtf is this secret even? People-- adults even-- like narcissistic jerk characters all the time? Adults realize he's a jerk and like him because of his jerkiness.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Q is like Ayn Rand

There is possibly an essay there on Q and objectivism, but it's way too early in the morning for me to contemplate it. Though I'd think questions of ethical self-interest and the necessity of choosing your own values probably does become rather more vitally important when you are damn near literally omnipotent and capable of rewriting reality if left unchecked.

On the subject of Q being a narcissistic asshole, though: he's a trickster god. They always are. Even the ones who are genuinely working for the net good of the people under their care (which Q arguably is) are usually assholes about it. It's most of the fun with tricksters.

From a distance, obviously. On a personal level, I suspect most people would want to do a Sisko on it and just punch the bastard. That's the beauty of the TV screen, though. You can like all the assholes, because you don't have to personally deal with them.

Which is good, because Q is still one of my favourite Trekverse characters.

This comment is good and you should feel good for making it. IA 100%

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Sisko punching Q is definitely the single most obvious reason Sisko is the best captain, though.

Also, I do agree that Q is a trickster-god, and I do like Q, but I like him far less than I usually like trickster-gods. He's just, by the standards of trickster gods, really kinda... small minded, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair to him, in between the petty tricks and small annoyances, he also steered interstellar civilisations into contact with each other, fought a civil war among his own (omnipotent) people, reintroduced the idea of procreation among his own people, and willingly tried to sacrifice his existence for the greater good when given no other options. So, I mean. He's petty and small-minded in personal interactions, but he's got a fair few larger goals playing in the background.

This.

I love Q (and Trelane!) because they're massive assholes. I'm glad for that. My appreciation for them will never wane.

...I think that's pretty much the whole point of the character, but yeah, I guess you would have to find him endearing or entertaining in order to enjoy him. I still do, so I love him (And ship him with Picard. In a oh-my-god-how-are-you-this-irritating-and-pushy-about-getting-me-to-do-what-you-want way, not an endgame serious relationship way.) ;)

I never really liked Q even as a teenager. I mean, he could be a funny smartass at times, but his humor was almost always that kind of bullying "ha ha take a joke, you humorless puny humans" humor I really dislike.

Text: I used to love Q when I was a teenager and his episodes were my favorites.

As an adult, I think he’s a narcissistic jerk. I guess he always was, but I don’t find it endearing or entertaining now and I can’t identify with people who do because I can’t stop thinking of how Q is like Ayn Rand … you might go through a phase as a teen but as an adult, you ought to know better.

AT the same time I feel a bit disloyal so obviously I’m still conflicted about this.

I find Q really amusing still... I mean, he doesn't really have a human sense of morality, which helps temper that for me. And when his more destructive, careless antics really start to grate, you can always watch Sisko punch him in the face on DS9. Sisko does not mess around.

Or imagine the collective punishing him by sending him to a pocket dimension full of colorful ponies, I guess. Whatever floats your boat.

Total opposite for me. I'm still jealous of Vash for getting to run away and have fun and horrible adventures with him. She actually fared better than most companions to the Doctor, lol. He brought her back in one piece and everything and they parted ways pretty amicably.

I feel somewhat the same - I like him in the pilot and the finale, but a lot of the rest of the time he just irritates me. He was always supposed to be a jerk but I just don't find it funny any more.
