should certain topics never be joked about

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
primarily rape jokes, but i'm sure there's other things people get their panties in a bunch about

there's nothing that you can't joke about, but there's a lot of things that you better be goddamned sure that you're being (a) funny and (b) coming at it from a good angle

and that's my standard spiel on this topic

Yeah, that's about where I'm at.

this, yes.

i think there's a certain difference between someone who's gone through a war or something making jokes about to relieve stress, and someone who has nothing to do with the war standing on the sidelines, pointing and laughing going: "lol ur leg's missing"

I like your analogy!

Exactly. I've seen (very few) jokes on sensitive topics done within those parameters that I considered hilarious, it's possible, it's just tricky, and some people think that because something was intended a joke, that automatically makes it sacrosanct or some shit. No, your "lol rape" joke was creepy and sucked, go away.

Exactly.

I always think of this Mr Show sketch ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKE9W0O8bX8 ), because I absolutely love it, I think it's hilarious, and it's unquestionably about rape. But it's not something that's easily done.

Everything can be joked about, but you have to be careful about who you're around with some.

Your face can be joked about.

Um... wouldn't that fall under the umbrella of "everything can be joked about"? Duh.

Re: should certain topics never be joked about

this is kind of a bad angle, if your joke would be offensive to those the issue most directly impacts, for instance, then your conclusion shouldn't be "i should say this around people who won't get upset" and more along the lines of "i should change my approach so that humour can be drawn from this that isn't destructive or at the expense of people who are hurting"

Your mom.

It's too horrible. Survivors of your mom would be triggered.

At least it isn't your mom. I can't believe how many "survivors" she has.

Either everything can be made fun of or nothing can. That doesn't mean that people have to find it funny or can't be offended though

You can get away with a joke about anything, just know your audience and be clever about it.

Sad confession, yo:

I make rape jokes.

It's the only way I can cope with my history, honestly. I've even made fucking COMICS about it! I have actually made a fellow SJW laugh with one of my rape joke comics, and she was like, "Oh my god, this is so horrible, BUT IT'S STILL FUNNY."

And I'm like, yup. Because at some point, it starts getting so absurd that it becomes funny, and it's like, if I keep doing that, it'll hurt less.

That said, my rape jokes are, "Lolz, this is so horrifically awful I can do nothing but laugh," not, "Lolz, you got raped and I find your pain amusing."

This is exactly why I really dislike the idea of certain things being off-limits for humor: you never know WHY someone might be joking about it. And I certainly don't feel like it's my place to ask for reasons behind something like that, either.

Enh, even so, I could totally understand someone being made so uncomfortable by my jokes that they'd want me to knock it off. Gallows humor isn't for everybody, and I wouldn't want to make, say, a fellow survivor feel shitty because I want to tell my joke just that badly.

Re: should certain topics never be joked about

It depends what angle you're coming from. If you're joking about how fucked up a rapist is or how screwy rape culture can be, that can be a clever joke. Comedians like Lewis C.K. managed to pull it off really well. However, if you're joking at the victim's trauma because "ha ha rape and traumatized victims are so funny" then you're an asshole who doesn't have enough brains to come up with witty material. It's the equivalent of a 12 year old pointing and laughing at something inappropriate.

So yes, you can joke about any issue. But it depends on what angle you have and what your joke is trying to point out.

Since the consensus here is that as long as the joke is told well by someone who really understands the audience, does anyone have examples of suicide jokes told well? This is a topic that I feel most uncomfortable personally joking about (partly because of my feelings toward suicide), but I'm wondering who's been willing to take it on and have any success with it.
