I liked the premise, and how they dealt with Aurora (at first I thought they were going for stupid kid, then I realized they wanted Maleficent to understand her innocence in the whole thing, and I did like that), but I just felt it missed the mark, somehow.

I'm not a Disney buff so I know little to nothing about the others in the picture, but she definitely wasn't as interesting as I felt they wanted her to be.

Is she?

Sleeping Beauty is one of the Disney movies I've only seen once, when I was a little kid. I have no memory of it.

I'm not a real Disney nerd, but I like the movies as much as anyone. But I've never really heard that Maleficent was considered the 'best' villain. One of the best, lots of people like her, sure. But, *the* definitive best? I'm pretty sure that depends on the sites you visit and how they rank this stuff.

Because you're totally right, plenty of those other villains are at least as interesting.

Original Maleficent is certainly the most badass. I mean, she's ferocious and dark and evil and also a dragon shape-shifter.

Does she have the best character? I mean, there's not really any depth besides EVIL so if that's what you mean, then definitely not.

Maleficent is tied with Frollo for me. She's way more awesome and badass, and I've always been a sucker for fairies, but she didn't have the depth that Frollo did.

(Also, Frollo has no neck here, and it's creeping me out.)

I like Maleficent for being unapologetically evil but I'm not sure I'd consider her the best one. She's got magic and being able to turn into a huge feck-off dragon which makes her cool to me, but if we're going with writing then I'd probably pick Follo or Gaston tbh. Or maybe Scar.

But I like all the Disney villains for different reasons anyway.

I don't know if she's the best but the cartoon version has always been my favorite. I like that there's really no good reason that she's doing what she's doing. She feels like a real fairy in that way - capricious. I always identify fairies/etc. with being like nature -- there's no reasoning or purpose to what they do. It doesn't always matter what YOU do; you could still get burned just because they feel like it, and it might just be because you happen to be in their way and they don't bother to stop -- like a flood or a fire.

I dislike that all the villains now need motivation or a reason for doing what they do. I like that sometimes evil is evil for evil's sake and nothing else. I liked the new movie but she definitely wasn't Maleficient. She was never really evil (especially since it was a "death-like sleep").

(Anonymous) 2015-01-20 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
If by 'more interesting' you mean 'more complicated', then yes, they all are. On the other hand, her simplicity is kind of what makes Maleficent for me. She's not grasping for anything. She's not seeking power, like Ursula or Scar, or immortality like Gothel, because she already has them. She's not troubled by lust or the need to justify herself like Frollo. She does what she wants just because she wants it. She does what she wants because she can. If she feels slighted by someone, she makes them pay. If she wants something, she takes it. She's terrifying because she's just that powerful, that capricious, and that spiteful, for no good reason and with no capacity for negotiation. You don't have anything she wants, and even if you did, she'd just take it from you. She's scary because she's simple.

I don't know. It depends on what you want in a character/villain, I guess, but you don't necessarily need complex motives or backstory to make a good character. If you do it right, sometimes simplicity works just as well. Maleficent may not be the best, but she is my favourite.

I like her because she's a pretty simple, badass villain with a fantastic character design, but she isn't my favorite. Scar will probably always be my favorite Disney villain for “Be Prepared”, but Ursula was damn good too.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-20 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
If she's considered "the best", it's probably only because how powerful and regal and badass she is. It doesn't necessarily translate as "the most three-dimensional" or "the most interesting."

(Anonymous) 2015-01-20 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, I'm still wondering -- why is Maleficent considered to be the best Disney villain, other than being a female one with powers (which Ursula is too, so...)?

Especially when compared to Scar, I mean dude killed his brother and achieved his goal (kingdom-wide domination) for a significant amount of time. Scar scared the crap out of me when I was a kid, ngl.

Image: a group of Disney villains.

Text: I know Maleficent is largely considered to be the best Disney villain and is probably the most popular one, but I think they were all more interesting than she was.

I think I'll agree with you there. The cleric was always the skeeviest to me, personally. I'd love to see the old story of Ursula and of the cleric.

She's not my personal favourite, but she was the one who scared me the most as a child. That scene where she appears in the fireplace in Aurora's room and all you see are her eyes? Nightmares for tiny me. D:

Maleficent, in the original cartoon movie, has no reason for being evil, she just is. The movie doesn't even indicate at all that she's a fairy, which would maybe add a bit of implied meaning with the pointless mischievousness sidhe have a reputation for, but maybe when Disney made the movie they didn't want to pile on a whole stack of stuff that would need explaining so she just became a "witch".

Maybe, OP, it's simply that you like villains who have reasons for being evil, and Maleficent fails to grab you, even with all her style, because she has no reason for it.

She's definitely not a deep/intricate villain, but she's a classic. Also, she can turn into a dragon.

I didn't realize how truly scary Maleficent was until one of the last Sleeping Beauty DVD releases. My roommate was watching it and there's this one scene where she's standing in the fireplace, semi-transparent save for her glowing eyes.

Sent shivers down my spine. I used to watch the movie all the time when I was very young, so I think it triggered a childhood fear.
