IA (but then most ships that extrapolate from a parent/child relationship do).

Ugh, I fucking hate Skoulson with every fiber of my being (I was perfectly fine tolerating the ship until the shippers got all passive-aggressive and gross - they've bashed May, Miles, Audrey, and Ward in their fics).

Coulson and May are Skye's parents in every way that matters and she called him "Dad" last episode! Not everything has to be romantic and about sex, damn it.

This is my one of my biggest NoTPs.

[personal profile] anonymous4 2015-01-22 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Do you mean in the mid season finale? We're usually a few episodes behind in the UK, so I never know which episode other people are referring to but, if so, when she said "Dad," I thought she was appealing to... her father.

It's the same for me, the ship creeped me out in theory but I didn't resent it existing until the shipper started to bash rival characters in fic.

I also find it hypocritical when Skoulson shippers of all people attack Skyeward as creepy und unhealthy. Healthy, Skyeward is not, but Skoulson shippers are the last ones who should judge there.

Could it be because the age gap is still significant and the have a surrogate father-daughter thing going on? Especially in context of our other dislikes?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-22 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
I feel this bone-deep. IA, I won't judge the reader or the writer, but as a concept, I *really* do not dig on messing with their parental figure/child relationship. Yeah, Skye is technically an adult. But her relationship with Phil is, imo, at a childlike level because she's simply never had a relationship like that before. So, yeah, joining you. They're out there, cool. Not for me, tho.

Wait, so you think that the only interesting ships are the ones that are incestuous, or have a huge age gap, or the other things that the OP mentioned.

Your attempt at trying to be "edgy" is hilarious, anon.

I agree. But then again, I can't ship any relationship that has even a hint of parental or even mentor to it. Just skeeves me out.

IA. I don't know why it creeps me out so much. Maybe because the show and the people behind it are really hammering home the 'surrogate' father/daughter angle? Part of it is the actors, I think. They've mentioned how their relationship is similar, mentor/protegee. When people then ship it, it makes things a bit uncomfortable IMO.

I also have nothing against their shippers. I've talked to some of them, seen their posts, they're a friendly bunch. Some of their talk borders on tinhatting for me though. An episode/interview/article can mention the paternal bond dozens of times and they'll still say it's a red herring because no way was that look/touch/line platonic. I mean, a lot of shippers are guilty of doing the latter, but with so much overwhelming evidence against it?

I'm not the only one who ships things knowing/believing it will never be canon, right? I don't know, maybe I just got the tone of those posts wrong.

As you said, OP, as long as they don't start pushing their ship, I hope they have fun doing their thing.

I've never given it much thought but I wouldn't say it creeps me out, I just don't get it. It isn't the ship for me because I prefer their relationship to stay father/daughter like. (However, I can't say I've never shipped incest *cough*Booker/Elizabeth*cough*, or ships with incesty overtones. I can't judge.)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-22 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Lots of time, even when I NOTP a ship I at least GET it. Like "Ugh, but I know how you got there". Skoulson? Every post I have read from shippers just Does Not Compute. It is so clearly father/daughter for me I can't see it even a little as romantic. (except a little in the way where I know the kind of man I want because of the kind of man my dad is)

What makes me mad is that I can't filter it out on AO3 because lots of people in that fandom don't seem to understand relationship tagging and will tag Skye/Coulson for FAMILIAL relationship. So maddening.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-22 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
God help me I've been reading Coulson/Clint for so many years I struggle to ship Phil with anyone else. I was in on the ground floor of the C/C ship, so its sort of a baby for me.

But No to S/C. I like Phil and May though.

[personal profile] anonymous4 2015-01-22 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Well... Different strokes!

I don't personally possess slash goggles -- I never seem to see what other people are seeing -- but I suppose I'm wearing the exact equivalent when look at Coulson & Skye; I'm just incapable of seeing that relationship as father/daughter. Even the mentoring element seems balanced to me by Coulson's admiration for Skye's qualities as a person. (My Dad certainly never treated me like that).

I'll admit back in season 1 I did kind of ship it(I've got a thing for older male mentor/younger girl in fiction what can I say?), but as the episodes went on and their relationship turned into a more father/daughter one it kind of faded away for me.

I still like their relationship ofc but it no longer holds shippy feelings for me. No issue with people that still like it that way though, not like I could judge anyway. :P

Text: [tiny writing on Coulson’s forehead]: concerned fatherly brow

Excluding ships that are incestuous, feature 30+ age gaps, violation of the Westmark effect, and/or involve someone under the age of consent

THIS is one of the ships that creeps me out the most

(not that I have any personal issues with people who ship it and I’m really grateful that I’ve VERY RARELY come across fic/etc for it without looking for it)

Well, the actors' ages are 30 years apart.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-22 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Though I don't know how old Coulson is supposed to be (I think several MCU characters are supposed to be quite a few years younger than the actors playing them), he's still old enough to have been a sort of father surrogate to her, which they have been really playing up in the show, so I can see how it would creep you out.

The whole team's relationship as a whole is spelled out pretty clearly as being a "found family" type situation. There's also the fact that Coulson was coded as her father figure from the beginning. Seriously, in one of the early episodes Skye explicitly describes seeing May and Coulson fighting as like seeing "mom and dad" fight.

I don't care if you ship it, but there isn't really any subtext there.

I can't see Coulson with any of the "kids" tbh. It seems pretty creepy to me, but I'm not going to begrudge people who ship it as long as, y'know, I don't have to hear about it. There's another pairing in the fandom that's far more obnoxious, IMO.

Then again, the idea of May/Ward was also kind of creepy to me, so there you go, I guess. At least that one's well and truly over.

I'm not fond of the ship, but I can't really judge given that I've written Skye/May fic.

I didn't know this was a thing, but I don't think I've ever been more squicked by a pairing in my life. Just...no. I've seen actual parent/child incest pairings that didn't squick me this bad.

I had to look up 'Westmark effect' because I thought it had something to do with Lloyd Alexander's 'Westmark series'. Which has a central romance between a commoner boy and a beggar girl who turns out to be the long lost heir to the throne. Which seemed like a weirdly specific thing to be squicked by.

I don't ship this. I do, however, ship May/Skye which some people would consider just as bad given their mentor/student status and May's so-called "mom" role in their little family. So I guess I can see where the Skye/Coulson people are coming from.
