Attack on Titan

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2015-01-23 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
So, I keep seeing things about this, and it looks interesting, but I actually know very little about it. I don't want to downright search in fear of too man spoilers.

Should I get into it? y/n?

What is it about (without being too spoiler-y)?

What are the selling points?

I like it. It's very dramatic, character driven and most of the characters are interesting. The con is that its fans tend to be obnoxious but you don't really have to watch it with them. :)

honestly, it's one of those shows where you have to watch a few episodes and decide on your own. I watched up to episode 7 and decided it just wasn't for me. If you don't mind a lot of gore go for it.

Basically people have walled themselves in to prevent titans from attacking them, but they bust in and kill people and people decide to train to fight them. There's a bit more but that's the barebones. My daughter loves it and we usually have the same tastes, but it wasn't my cup of tea. I say give it a shot, you might end up loving it.

Giant naked cannibals with no genitals keep smashing through the walls of a massive European-style city to eat people. Oh, and there's some drama.

I can't take it seriously at all.

I thought the beginning was fantastic. Cool concept, great animation, horrifying, some likeable characters, interesting twists, kickass fight scenes... and then it got really slow, talky, and political. Also the horror and desperation become tedious after a while because its ALL grim with little forward movement for the good guys. Definitely worth starting, just maybe not worth finishing? I think ai made it to 19 or 20. Meh.

I can't get over the fact that "no" was translated as "on" instead of "of."

It should be Attack of the Titan (which makes so much more goddamn sense), not Attack on Titan.

Holy shit, I had no idea (m Japanese is pretty much non-existent). That's a terrible translation error.

I recall reading somewhere that "Attack on Titan" was in fact chosen by the author himself, even though it's not a proper translation of the original title (a more direct translation would actually be more something along the lines of "Advance of the Giants").

Bu...but why? Why would he choose that? It doesn't even make sense. I thought the show was about an attack on a place called Titan when everyone was talking about it and before I had seen the Japanese.

Me to, anon. I thought it was a military sci-fi taking place on one of Jupiter's moons!

It could have been worse. I still remember that one subgroup who tried to push "The Eotena Onslaught" as an alternative title... I'll take the mistranslation over that any day.

It's a dramatic and pretty gory shounen series about teenagers who are shuffled into fighting a pointless war against man-eating giants, with the added bonus of court and military intrigue and a steampunk setting (debate on whether the show is set past, present, or a different planet entirely.) It's a grim premise to be sure, but it does some interesting things, the anime art is really cool, and the characters develop in believable ways. If you're someone who always joins fandoms for the series you watch, however, I'd be cautious-- it's one of the crazier anime fandoms, and the anime vs manga debate gets really heated.

What it's about -- here's a basic (and slightly edited for spoilers) summary from the wiki:

Several hundred years ago, humans were nearly exterminated by Titans. Titans are typically several stories tall, seem to have no intelligence, devour human beings and, worst of all, seem to do it for the pleasure rather than as a food source. A small percentage of humanity survived by walling themselves in a city protected by extremely high walls, even taller than the biggest Titans. Flash forward to the present and the city has not seen a Titan in over 100 years. Teenage boy Eren and his foster sister Mikasa witness something horrific as the city walls are destroyed by a Colossal Titan that appears out of thin air. As the smaller Titans flood the city, the two kids watch in horror. Eren vows that he will murder every single Titan and take revenge for all of mankind.

The biggest selling point for me was that while it's shamelessly grimdark it's still very engaging on a human level when it comes to the characters. Kickass female characters also. No fanservice that I can remember (if you don't count the anime's OP), and virtually all the women are depicted as competent and with their own agency. I also enjoy the mystery, speculation and theories, although I will say that's become weak in recent volumes of the manga.

Definitely don't look for too much information if you're planning on getting into it at all -- some of the spoilers are things the plot pivots around.

Are you think of the anime or the manga? Several spoilers have yet to air in season one of the show, and I think it's around Vols. 2 and 6-8 of the manga so far that the biggest reveals happen.

The manga's better in terms of pacing and storyline, but despite changing some things and putting a different emphasis on different aspects of the plot the anime's much easier on the eye. Isayama's art, especially at the beginning, could be either 'unique' or 'incredibly ropey' depending on your tastes. It can be difficult telling characters apart in early chapters.

Like someone else said, the early episodes and chapters are the most exciting, due to the sheer bombardment of reveals going on. If they thought the end of the anime season became overdone with politics, then I'm guessing they're not reading the manga because that's basically been the last year's worth of chapters. If you catch up from the beginning you might not have as much of an issue with the pacing, but having read through Vol. 1 - 12, I found Vols, 13 onward to be disappointing.

The shippy side of the fandom is fucking crazy, stay away from it as much as possible if you do find yourself enjoying the series. The meta/analysis/speculation side, however, is pretty interesting.

People have summed it up pretty well here, I think.
Isayama tries very hard to make a Real Plot, it's just that it's his first real series so he's not as good as it could be. The first season of the anime is pretty solid, but atm the manga is going off the rails a little bit (remains to be seen whether it will completely crash and burn or not). Still, I find it refreshing that there's a series all about plot with no fanservice, and no fanservicey characters at all (well, I guess you could call Levi fanservice, but he's more in the mega-badass sense than the 'not wearing clothes' sense, haha).

The spoiler fear is real, in this one though. Spoilers really change the game.
I would say, don't take it too seriously (it's... Very Dramatic), watch a few episodes and see if you're having fun.

I really enjoyed it in the beginning, but lost interest fairly quickly and stopped following it altogether when it started doing the Whole Chapters Where Nothing Happens and Tired Shonen Tropes.

I think it's great, and that a lot of the backlash is due to it being popular.

To me, I like the:

-Animation
-Frightening, anyone-can-die plot. To me, the titans are legitimately terrifying and that seems to be the overall consensus
-AMAZING female representation (half the characters are women, none of them are sexualized, they're pretty much all titan-killing warriors same as the guys... I'm not sure how many anime/manga are as feminist in female representation as this show)
-Plot - I think, for the most part, it's a very intentional plot, though it's long and there's not an end in sight yet. To me, it feels like the author has known what he's wanted to do from the start and I appreciate that, even if it's getting pretty complex
-Awesome soundtrack

I'd also say watch a few episodes and decide for yourself. The first episode is a bit expositiony, though does get exciting, then things calm down for an episode or two before things go nuts again. If you're going to do it I'd say at least watch five or six episodes before you decide because iirc that's when the drama has started up properly?
