"Fake SJW"

Well, that's enough internet for me today.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-25 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you in denial that those exist? They most certainly do.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-26 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
those people who pretend to be sjw to make people who care about issues look bad?

idk anymore

I know it was true in this case but I'm still trying to wrap my mind around someone calling a person a fake SJW. "You're only pretending to be this thing I don't like". Um okay.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-25 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Unless the friend is part of the group who's decided to "reclaim" "SJW" and thinks of it as a positive label?

There's a pretty sizeable group of people who seem to think that SJWs don't really care about social justice and are just pretending for... some reason????? Some say for attention, some say for status????? Seems to me like there are ways to make friends and influence people that are both more fun and less likely to get you doxxed and harassed by trolls, but hey, I've never claimed anti-SJWs made sense...

I'm not really sure you took the better path, but you know your friend better then me. I'd have gone for a happy medium, where you told them the part about finding it wooden without making it personal?

You deff got me wondering about what series it was though.

TBH, your view might also be skewed. Like, some people just don't like certain plots. I couldn't get into the characters in breaking Bad, for example, but that doesn't mean they're badly written. They're well-written; I just hate them. our friend is seeing something there you don't and that's okay. Just like it's okay that you don't like it. Sheesh, do friends no longer have normal, civil conversations about this.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-25 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Not everyone can handle criticism. Some people identify a lot with their fandoms, and tend to think that criticism agaisnt their fandom is criticism against their taste/intelligence/whatever.

Ironically enough, when I tell people that I couldn't get into a show because the female characters are wooden and their character arch is non-existent, I get accused of being a sjw.

Lazy writing is bad writing, and sexist writing tends to be reaaaally lazy.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-25 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I sort of get this. I've done it once or twice, though not with friends, more in general online discussions.

It's just that if you claim you don't like something because of sexism/racism/homophobia, people just sort let it slide and say 'you might be right' because they don't want wank. If you say you don't like something because you personally don't like the characters or thought the plot was boring or whatever, people are much more inclined to keep hounding you about it. 'Give it more time', 'I know it starts slow, but...', etc. It's natural to want to defend your favorites, I've done it too, but it can get annoying.

It's a shitty thing to do though, using those issues to get out of that discussion. I felt bad doing it.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-25 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously?

In my experience, saying you don't like something because of an -ism or a -phobia is the quickest way to start a shitstorm.

Saying it's not your thing and then shutting down (politely) any attempts to change your mind is far less trouble. More effort, I grant you, but much less trouble.

Oh good grief, just say, "It's not my thing, I'm glad you enjoy it."

(Anonymous) 2015-01-25 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously. "I tried it, but I just couldn't get into it. You enjoy yourself." How hard is that??

(Anonymous) 2015-01-25 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes that doesn't work, unfortunately. I've had a couple friends over the years that just wouldn't let it go if you said you didn't like something.

"But you have to watch the first 12 episodes and then it really takes off! Oh, you watched those? Well you have to watch til the end of the season, and then it all comes together!"

That's what I do! I have a lovely friend, she's tops, but she definitely likes film as a medium more than I do. And that's okay! She will give me some gentle ribbing sometimes about how I hate everything, but nothing serious, because she's a nice person.

(Also, I have to give kudos for someone who can laugh at themselves. I can only hope to be that cool.)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-25 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know your friend, but it seems to me "it's racist and sexist" is a lot harsher criticism than "wooden characters".

Text: when I said I wasn’t interested in your favorite show because of the way women and minorities were portrayed, you accused me of being a “Fake SJW.”

The irony is, you’re right.

If I told you the truth - that I couldn’t get past the first episode because the characters were wooden and the plot makes no sense - you would be really hurt. (I think you’re overinvested in the show in general and overidentifying with the main character in particular, but telling that would also really hurt you.

I wish I could be honest, but you don’t want to hear it.

Let me guess... Netflix's Marco Polo?

It's a show with 99% PoC but if people aren't calling it the "Chinese Game of Thrones", then they say the portrayal of the women is too sexualized.

In a twist, I kept begging a friend to watch, and she gave me the "characters are wooden, I couldn't get into it", until I got another friend to try it and that other friend was with them -- they immediately launched into racist crap. ("Why is Benedict Wong playing Kublai Khan? When I think of Mongols, I think of Filipinos." - "Why are they all Japanese?" - "Why are there Arab people?")
