I follow a couple people who are way into DA. Based on what I have seen from them, the DA fandom is just full of drama. They have completely turned off any interest I have for the game.

There are a lot of amazing people in the fandom too. I don't find it too hard personally to avoid the drama. Honestly, I've come across way more of it in F!S than actually on Tumblr itself.

Theres a specific tumblr user and her god awful swarm of defenders I blame for this. The DA tumblr fandom is shit, I think like three fanartists were nearly run off the site last/this month for dumb reasons. this is why i barely interact with others there and just quietly post art/reblog funny shit.

This is my nightmare, OP. I tend to get really protective of the creators of my (mostly SH-related) canons, especially when I remember the endlessly obnoxious manner in which some of the first SH fans treated Conan Doyle. Just. NO.

And while sometimes I'm upset my fandoms aren't bigger, I'm also thankful they aren't big enough to contain a noticeable number of insane fans.

So I understand completely :/

Gaider never thought dwarf sex was pedophilia.

The dev team got sent a bunch of screencaps of the sex scenes in DAO from gross-ass pedos who'd designed their dwarf!Wardens to look like children. Gaider didn't want to deal with that again so he decided not to write any more dwarf romances, but he only writes a handful of characters anyway.

I haven't been into DA very long - I only started following Gaider's blog like a week before he posted that. I hope he makes a new blog on another, less obnoxious site.

The games themselves are brilliant, but jfc, my Tumblr block list has tripled in size since I started dipping my toes into the fandom. For every cool person I find, there's a screeching hyper-entitled everything-is-problematic baby to balance them out.

I'm so mad about this. Yeah, Dragon Age doesn't get everything perfect in this regard, but at least they actually TRY. So many gaming companies just shrug and give us yet another generic male protag, no female protag option, and no LGBT characters.

Also for fuck's sake Sera isn't a bad lesbian just because you don't like the way she's written as a character. You expected her to be an embodiment of tumblr SJW values but she's afraid of mages and scoffs at Dalish culture so suddenly her existence is offensive and she's poorly written as a lesbian romance? lol no. (I bring this up because this is everyone's favorite thing to scream about, or at least it was last I checked. Is there a new topic to scream about already or am I good?)

tumblr expects all characters to be boringly dull and perfect in order to not be ~problematic. as a lesbian im not upset with sera at all. she has flaws and can be annoying but thats what makes her a character and not a cardboard cutout.

Text: The Dragon Age fandom is the only fandom I absolutely refuse to join because shit like this happens. David Gaider and Bioware have tried very hard to appeal to the minority masses, but every step they take forward ends up being declared two steps backward. At least they TRY, and when called out, make an attempt to address the issue rather than sweep it under the rug. Yeah, they’ve made a few judgmental errors, but I’ve never seen any fandom rag on them as hard a this one does. They are human, and are going to make mistakes, and people need to fucking understand that. I knew he wasn’t going to stay long, there was just too much crazy coming from the fandom, and I can understand the need for representation, but nobody wanted to let them TRY.

I think he's just being a weenie, personally. If you don't like some bullshit from whiny tumblerinas then don't engage them. As a creator you have to accept that your works are going to receive criticism and not all of it will be polite.

He should have done the adult thing and ignored them. By letting them "drive him off tumblr" he's giving them more voice and weight than they ever should have had and now people are talking about them even more.

Honestly, he never should have been on tumblr in the first place. You want to be a creator of a well-known property running a public blog that all the lowest bottom-feeder obsessive fans can see and target, you need to have way more control over the interface than a site with a format like tumblr allows. I've got a thin hope that Gaider will just start blogging again on a site where he can be master of his domain instead of subject to the whims of reblogs, but he might have burned out his motivation already, and I don't blame him.
