Old fandoms you revisit

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-01-30 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
What are some older fandoms you have revisited recently? Did they disappoint or were they as awesome as you remember? Are they still churning out fic or dead as door nails?

I decided to look up some old CSI fic because of a comment on here a couple days ago. As far as I can see, fic is still being made but I don't know any of the current canon (I stopped watching when Grissom left). I was able to find some of my old favorite fics! I remember that I was disappointed by the lack of Nick whump (not many post Stalker/Grave Danger fics) and that disappointment is still there. :(

The DBZ fandom is fairly dead and man...the old fic does not hold up. But in my 16-17 year old mind that fic was the epitome of great writing. At least I have the memories. :P

I poke my head back into the Buffy fandom every once in a while. I had already missed most of the crazy when I joined the fandom, and it seems to have mellowed out even more.

Star Wars fandom is still as cliquish as ever. You have the OT-only fans, the PT fans, the all 6 fans, and the everything including the EU fans, and no one ever just agrees to love Star Wars and talk about the things they love together. Everyone is convinced their opinion is objectively true (it seems particularly so for the anti-prequel fans, but I've seen it across the board).

I hop into the Buffy fandom sometimes. I joined very, very late. So I missed most of the crazy as well. But I probably missed most of the good fic.

I just rewatched Criminal Minds Suspect Behavior and looked to see if anything new had been written. My recollection of the fic written during the time the show aired was Mick/Prophet and that seems to still hold. But there is one fic I found that deals with the cliff hanger ending, so that's what I'll be reading this weekend.

If there was ever a fandom, it's pretty dead now. The same with a bunch of old movies I've recently watched. Only a handful of fics, and none to scratch my own itch. Clearly I'm going to have to put my writing cap on...

On another note, I've also been looking up some old LOTR fic I read back in the day. Some of it's still decent but wow was I young to think others were okay.

WTF. I didn't even know this was a thing!

I read LOTR back in the day. But it was mostly Aragorn stuff. I recently got back into it but I was all about the Faramir. I think I have read every terrible fic starring Faramir that I could find.

Every few years, I pop back into the Harry Potter fandom and just browse fic. It's the same as it always was, going through so much terrible fic in order to find hidden gems.

I only read rec fics in the Potter fandom. There is just too much bad to wade through.

Every 1-2 years I watch a Harry Potter movie and think I want to read some Harry Potter fic. Then I go there, get overwhelmed, and swear off Harry Potter fic until the next time I see a movie.

I revisited the DN Angel fandom recently and most of the fic is so awful :(

It seemed brilliant when I was 13 or 14 though! There's one fic in particular that I spent over an hour hunting down because I used to love it so much. And then I found it and it was SO bad. And there was so much weird Riku demonization and bashing that made no sense. How did I forget about that? Why did I even enjoyed the fic in the first place? I've always liked Riku

Ahhhhhh. There are so many of those fics in the Yu-Gi-Oh fandom. I spent weeks looking for one in particular. And when I found it, I couldn't even finish reading it.

Sarah Connor Chronicles. I ship John/Derek and like going back and reading old fic. Unless I'm not looking in the right place, no new fic is being written for that pairing.

I hate when fandoms just stop producing anything. The Dark Knight Rises fandom is basically dead now. :(

I haven't visited recently, but the one that stands out the most is the Rurouni Kenshin fandom. God, I read a lot of Saito/Sano fic back in the day. My memories say that shit was the hottest, most addicting fic evar but when I went back I realized the majority of it was absolutely terrible and my taste was just bad.

A lot of the old school Sailor Moon fandom is just gone, but we have a new fandom which is cool. I never was a fic reader and I'm not now, but there's tons of new fanart.

Sometimes I miss the old websites (including my own, lol)

Tales of the Abyss and Tales of Symphonia. They're like a warm pair of slippers I can always slip back into when things are getting rough for whatever reason, it's a huge comfort to me.

I recently paid a visit to the Weiß Kreuz fandom, which was one of the first fandoms I was ever active in.

It's surprisingly not completely dead but there also wasn't any material I would have wanted to read, even for nostalgia's sake (I have one of the first fics I read in that fandom saved on my kindle and still like it, so that's all need for a trip down memory lane.)

DC and Marvel comics still has an active fandom, though who gets paired with who has changed quite a bit in the past seven years. NOBODY seems to ship Deadpool with Cable anymore, now it's all Spiderman.

I'm just glad that AO3 keeps the movieverse and the comicverse separate. Makes things easier for me.

I replay the Ace Attorney games once a year so I always look back into the fandom and write a fic or two at least once every year. Most of the fandom is still on the kink meme and still pretty good, I'm always glad to know that such a timeless game has such a timeless fandom too.

Not the Tumblr fandom though, that sucks. I don't even participate in my main fandom anymore because most of it moved to Tumblr and Tumblr sucks.

I've got a few.

DBZ, I still love the stupid show and some fic is okay but a lot of it is pretty meh. And it's really, really samey. Like everything is either High School AU's or three-years fic(in the B/V side of things).

The A-Team, where I have to go scrounging on some really old sites for fic sometimes and for the most part the fic is alright. There's just not a huge amount of it.

And I went scrounging the Narnia fandom the other day for some Susan/Prince Caspian fic because I had an urge.

Inuyasha and Card Captor Sakura were my favorite fandoms years ago.

Revisiting them was a mistake and rereading my favorite fics was a bigger one. How could I love so many badfics?
(I still had a lot of fun back then, so I guess all in all it's ok)

Re: Old fandoms you revisit

(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
DBZ and Inuyasha are definitely ones for me.

The DBZ fandom is fairly dead and man...the old fic does not hold up.

Okay, but for B/V fic, have you read Vejiitasei Ascendant? Because if not, DUDE. It's an old old old fic, so old I assume it's a classic, but also so old that maybe newer fans haven't heard of it. It's hands down the best fanfic I have ever read.

I occasionally check back with HP, The Eagle / Eagle of the Ninth, TDKR, The Borgias, Buffy, Inception, and Merlin. I have several pairings from less popular movie fandoms that have almost nothing.

HP, Buffy, and Merlin still get new fic - but a lot of it is not great (and wasn't to begin with). Still check my favourite authors who are still active and rejoice when they have new things.

The Eagle fandom is a happy place for me. Not a whole lot of new stuff, but it's mostly awesome.

I wish there was more for The Borgias. People are still writing, but I wish it was bigger.

I'm sad that Jimmy/Bo (Cursed) don't get more love.

I rekindled my love for Power Rangers Ninja Storm (don't judge me) and it's almost completely dead sadly.

I've also been on a Marauders craze for the past few months (lately when I've returned to the HP fandom it's been because of Tom Riddle even though Remus Lupin is my favorite character in the series) and some of the fic is actually better than I remember it to be? But there's also much more WolfStar than I remember and seeing as I don't ship it that is quite annoying.

I am not sure it counts as "revisiting" as I do it quite frequently, but I tend to haveHarry Potter as my go-to fandom for fic when nothing for my current fandom seems interesting.

When I first got into The Hobbit, I did go back and look at a couple of old fics I read when I was in LotR the first time around (in 2004). One fic was still as good as I originally thought (a reminder of my first OTP, Aragorn/Boromir) while another - a fic I'd downloaded and kept a copy of - managed to make me groan at how my tastes were so pathetic.

It was a case of going back to reread old fic (again, in LotR) that made me realise my pet peeve about soulbonding fics, and how I hate it when soulbonds force people to fall in love.

Other than that, I might occasionally go poke through my Favourites list on FFN (I have a huge list, with over 1000 fics on it) and reread the occasional fic and that might cause me to read a few others in the same fandom. More often than not, it's either HP or one of my "minor fandoms" like Sailor Moon or Ranma 1/2.
