Yes. It's oppressive.

?

Actually pursuing such a relationship would be silly, but seeing a gay male celeb and having a celeb crush on him isn't oppressive. It's not like he'll ever even know you exist, most likely.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-31 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Straight people are privileged viz. gay people. On top of that, there is a long and terrible history of people trying to force gay people to become straight. A straight person indulging in a fantasy of being with a gay person is not good for those reasons.

Look, anon. I'm gay. I get weirded out, the time or two that a strange girl has said she'd do me.

But if said Anon Girl is having a fantasy about plowing me in her own little head, and that's it, she's not oppressing me. She's not DOING anything that impacts me. Her private fantasy has absolutely NO EFFECT on my life or how people treat me.

I fully believe that people should be able to fantasize about whatever they want in the confines of their little skulls. There's a difference between fantasy and reality, and trying to control people's fantasies, in my opinion, is not going to control their behavior.

I'm glad that it doesn't bother you, but it can be very bothersome to others.
lb_lee: M.D. making a shocked, confused face (serious thought)

[personal profile] lb_lee 2015-01-31 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Your bother < someone's right to fantasize about whatever they want.

Seriously, if you don't even KNOW a fantasy is happening privately, how can it bother you? If someone is shoving it in your face, that's one thing. But just private fantasies? Come on, man, that's just creepy.

The first two: yes. The third: a fantasy is something that only happens in your mind. I really do not see the harm as long as you don't voice it to the person in question.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-31 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
It can be harmless to a point, but we are taught to view people of certain groups in certain ways, and a lot of times those ways are detrimental. If you indulge too much in a fantasy that has to do with seeing people in a harmful way, it can eventually be harmful, because it can strengthen those attitudes.

[personal profile] anonymous4 2015-01-31 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
And how do you plan to stop people doing something that is totally beyond their control, like having wet dreams?

If you could, it would be a hell of a lot more oppressive than people having dreams about other people.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-31 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's wrong just to think it or have dreams because like you said, people don't have control over that. But I think it's wrong to indulge and feed the fantasy.

Dude, it was a DREAM. OP is supposed to hire someone to wake her regularly and interrogate her on whether she's having a dream you find oppressive?

OP, you had an enjoyable dream. Don't sweat it.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-01 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
No, that's impractical and we can't help what we dream about, anyway. The idea is to think about fantasies critically and try not to indulge them if it seems they come from a bad place and are strengthening negative attitudes.

Not as much as thought police, though.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-31 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
What is this? What is this thought police?

Like, on the one hand, it's clearly acceptable to say that some kind of thought is, in some sense, wrong. If I think that the earth rotates around the moon, that is wrong and it is valid to say that it's wrong. I mean, is that thought policing? What kind of coherent statement are we trying to make when we say thought police?

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2015-01-31 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
We are trying to say that telling somebody they are somehow oppressive for simply being attracted to somebody they know won't be attracted to them back is a form of thought policing, and more oppressive then the initial thought could ever be. Even if this insane moron of an idea is somehow correct, the response is in fact the greater evil.

[personal profile] diet_poison 2015-01-31 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Well technically someone *thinking* the earth rotates around the moon doesn't harm anyone.

It's kinda like how I approach evolution. I believe it's a thing, but if someone else doesn't and they're not a biologist (or in another scientific field where it really matters) I honestly do not care as long as they're not trying to tell me I'm wrong, a bad Christian, ignorant, etc. - and I'll argue about it 'til the cows come home but only if they want to

They can think it, but they should try to overcome it and not indulge it, knowing the implications.

It's true. There are serious implications involving the dry status of my drawers if I think too hard about my sexually incompatible thoughts about people who wouldn't fuck me anyway :(

I can't believe people in FS were stupid enough to take this bait, they'll truly believe anything a strawman "tumblr SJW" supposedly says.
