I need more chick flicks and romcoms, please!

Stuff I liked: Love Actually, Definitely Maybe, Two Weeks Notice, The Proposal (probably my favourite, it's so unashamedly OTT, gets really sweet, and stars my #1 weakness: cute secretaries).

Stuff I didn't like: Confessions of a Shopaholic. I didn't like the bit with her lying to her guy about her ex stalking her, couldn't even finish it.

Would you be OK with only the first season of a romcom? I think they're not renewing it. "Trying Again" is very nice - I liked its warm and humane treatment of its characters, and the fact that it wasn't filmed just for the sake of the jokes. But the jokes were funny, too - a little on the absurdist side, the way classic British comedy likes them.

(bear in mind the fact that I'm no great specialist in romcoms, or romance in general, though, so I may be off the mark here).

I actually don't really like following ongoing series, I prefer watching them after they've finished (or cancelled) so that's pretty good with me ^_^ Just looked it up, I don't really like the sound of the premise, but I may check it out, I like the way you describe it :)

Yeah, I see how one may not be too keen on that. I do think they handle it well, and there isn't any unnecessary drama (which would've been a dealbreaker to me). But in the end, yes, it doesn't change the fact that it's this one person having a hard time choosing between two dudes. I don't think the premise is the best part of this show, really.

I enjoyed Love, Rosie.

"For Love or Money" starring Michael J. Fox is pretty cute. Yeah, it's got the standard "liar" plot, but as that plot goes, it's handled much less awkwardly than other films.

If you're ok with older movies, I have even more suggestions;

"Ninotchka" starring Greta Garbo is very charming, though a little dated with the Soviet Russia references.

"The Lady Eve" has fantastic chemistry between the leads, which takes what should be a painful premise and makes it funny and playful.

"That Night in Rio" is more comedy than romantic comedy, but there's a cute romantic relationship in there.

"Operation Petticoat" stars Cary Grant, so that right there is always a plus.

Lord, I watch too many movies...

I was raised on a steady diet of Cary Grant comedy, and Operation Petticoat is still one of my favorite movies. Thanks for bringing it to mind; I should rewatch it in the near future.

I love old movies (was in fact going to ask for recs of old musicals too but decided to go one at a time) so that's not a problem at all :D I just looked up all of these, they all sound absolutely charming. That Night in Rio especially has caught my eye, can't wait to check it out <3 Thanks!

Have you ever seen While You Were Sleeping? It came out around the same time as Sleepless in Seattle, but it's a softer, gentler version of The Proposal so you might enjoy it.

No I haven't. I've been meaning to watch Sleepless in Seattle too but I forgot the title and only realised when I looked it up that it's what I was looking for. I like how ridiculous The Proposal is though haha. I'm not sure if I'm sold on the premise of While You Were Sleeping, but I'll check it out, thanks!

Second opinion: While You Were Sleeping, while good (though it does have a misunderstanding that is allowed to continue because the truth is hard as its main plot point) is nothing like The Proposal.

You might try America's Sweethearts.

There's always the classing When Harry Met Sally. It's one of the few, maybe only, romcoms I like.

I've looked up When Harry Met Sally before and I didn't really think I'd like it (I hate it the part in movies when the couple breaks up and this one sounds especially awkward/painful), but I'll check it out when I can if you say you like it (I trust f!s' judgement, God knows why). Thanks!

Well, I view it pretty heavy through nostalgia glasses, because it's something my mom watched a lot when I was growing up. But it's not terribly overwrought like some of them get, just a friendship > on-and-off-again > actual love. It's sweet.

Also, the diner scene is always hilarious. I hope you enjoy it!

If you like Hugh Grant, I'd definitely recommend Four Weddings and a Funeral and Music and Lyrics. Notting Hill is okay, but I didn't enjoy it as much others. Oh, and Sense and Sensibility (1995) - not rom-com, but romance focused and a nice adaptation.

The Thing Called Love - country music focused and an early supporting role for Sandra Bullock. And seconding someone else's recommendation of While You Were Sleeping.

Moonstruck
Shakespeare in Love

Silly, but good: Mannequin, The Cutting Edge

Yeah I've looked up some of Hugh Grant's other stuff, I thought I might watch Four Weddings and a Funeral when I'm bored because I'm not too sure if I'll like it (I usually only watch movies if I'm 100% sold on the first time I look it up). I have watched that adaptation of Sense and Sensibility actually (I'm an Austen nerd or whatever we call ourselves these days), I think everything in it was really good and Hugh Grant looks pretty much exactly how I've always imagined Edward.

Will look up the others too, especially The Cutting Edge. I've heard of Shakespeare in Love before but I'm not sure if I should watch it, it sounds a bit pretentious to me.

I think you'd like Under the Tuscan Sun; it's more "finding yourself" than straight out romcom. Wonderfully sweet.

What else... There's also Romantics Anonymous/Les émotifs anonymes. It's a really cute French romcom about a chocolate maker and a chocolate business owner who are both terrible introverts.

If you like both of those, I'll pull out my netflix list and rec more.

Oh they both sound soo sweet, I'll be sure to check them out ASAP, thank you! I'll watch these first and let you know if I need more from you, shall I? <3

Yeah, it's been years and years since I've seen Under the Tuscan Sun; my sister would usually be the one to put it on. Now that I've remembered it though, I kind of want to (re)watch it too. xD

How about a gay option? Because Saving Face, Kissing Jessica Stein and Imagine Me & You are three of my favorite rom-coms of all time.

Thirding While You Were Sleeping. It's gorgeous and silly and super sweet and I haven't met anyone who hasn't seen it who hasn't liked it.

Otherwise, my faves include Hope Floats (another Sandra Bullock one, more rom-drama than comedy but very sweet at the end), The Lake House (another serious one with Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves but it is WORTH IT), You've Got Mail (oh my god, so good, especially if you like people falling in love when they think they hate each other), Sabrina (haven't seen the original but the remake with Harrison Ford is rather lovely), My Big Fat Greek Wedding (so good and lovely and funny, really), 27 Dresses (ridiculous but very sweet), and if you don't mind some old people in your romantic comedies (I personally love it), I also enjoyed Something's Gotta Give.

Also, if you don't mind black and white classics: Some Like It Hot and the Apartment, The Shop Around The Corner (has the same plot as You've Got Mail), and It Happened One Night were all romcoms I particularly enjoyed.

I forgot one of my favourite subgenres of romantic comedies - the high school romantic comedy! If you're okay with romcoms set in high schools, you should definitely check out Never Been Kissed (this one is at least about an adult pretending to be a high schooler getting with a teacher, but in a non skeevy way), Clueless, Ten Things I Hate About You (though it would be pretty surprising if you hadn't see those last two), Drive Me Crazy (super delightful), and She's The Man (Amanda Byrne at her best and young Channing Tatum). And Easy A should just be watched anyway because it has a fab script and is great on a bajillion levels.

Just Like Heaven! It's a Reese Witherspoon flick where she's a ghost haunting her old apartment, which Mark Ruffalo moves into. It's very sweet!
