The travel thread

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-02-11 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Hey secret people! If you could pick somewhere to travel to in the world, where would you go and why?

My travel style is to see where the locals go and what they like to do and eat, which is unfortunately in direct opposition to what my partner tends to like to do which is see monuments. I like art museums, she likes natural history or aerospace stuff... luckily we can almost always compromise by going to see nature sites or popular hikes/parks, or we'd just never get along.

So, tell me about your ideal vacation.

Japan's bunny island. That place is seriously what my personal version of heaven would be, and it EXISTS HERE ON EARTH RIGHT NOW.

That was one of the places I actually didn't get around to going when I lived in Japan, although I did go see the deer in Nara. They were deer. There were a lot of them.

I would totally go there too. And the cat island. Except I have flown in a plane before, and never ever want to be in a plane again, especially for multiple hours, which sort of rules out ever going to Japan. :/

Actually, the multi-hour flights are a lot less nerve-wracking than the short duration ones. You get up to much higher altitudes, so there's exponentially less turbulence to deal with and ...well, it's really just a long, boring sit.

I've flown so much I've actually lost count of how many times I've flown, and I have to say that if you're scared of flying it's way less scary to fly long-haul.

It's not so much a fear of flying as... severely emetophobic and even the short flights made me feel really airsick even after taking motion sickness meds. :/

You're going to make me choose one place to travel? Ugh. That's cruel, Herpy. I'm gonna cheat and list my top 3 places to go.

Norway, Turkey, and the Gulf. I'd go to every dinky little cafe in the country, see every ruin and old church/mosque/plantation I could, swim in the sea, feed alligators, buy cds from street musicians, and visit all the museums I could, especially the art and history places.

lol I more meant if you had to go somewhere tomorrow. But then, I guess there's nothing stopping you from going all three places.

I've promised myself that I will get to all three. Somehow, someway, some day. /shakes fist at the sky.

I would really love to take a train across Europe, visiting all the historical cities and sites. If I had a couple free months and a lot of money.

Picking just one place, probably St. Petersburg because I've always been interested in Russian history.

Right at this particular moment, though, mostly I just want to travel to a beach somewhere.

Oh man. St. Petersburg is also one of my places I need to see at some point.

Because Ruslit geekery.

I'd probably go back to India, because I rally loved it there and it's just so vast I've only seen a very small bit of it.

My travel style depends. As a child, I basically went to fancy hotels with my folks - pretty classic beach holiday at the sea/pool.

Later I did the whole tour bus thing.

Nowadays I mostly just do budget travel, in youth hostels or guesthouses. Rent a car or use public transport if available.

I like monuments, but I found that over time I do not need to see every little church along the way. I sort of just like breathing in the atmosphere, getting a feel for the place.

I'm not sure if I could take my bf everywhere, though. I've been in places with roaches, and holes for toilets and dust everywhere. Not sure how he'd handle it.

Less than ideal living conditions is just part of travel, imo. Ideally, you're there to experience the different ways people live and gain an appreciation for other cultures and your own in the process.

...If you stick to hotels and McDonald's and fast food everywhere you go, you're not really travelling, you're just kind of going someplace without learning much of anything.

I love doing crazy non-stop trips. Right now, I'm dead set on going to Hawaii with my mom. We've been talking about it for years and we're both in a place where we could do it financially so that's the game plan.

I love walking around cities. I like to take pictures of recognizable places from each city and make a collage to hang on my wall. I've got cities all over the world at this point. I like to constantly be on the move.

right now my ideal vacation would be to live in a huge hotel by the ocean (a very large lake would do, though), read books by the fireplace, take long walks on the beach, pick up shells, and sleep a lot, with someone else fixing food and making the beds.

i am boring

Oh God this is the most difficult possible question to answer.

Mmmm probably Japan I think. For the food, for the history, for the culture, for the food, for the museums and the landscapes and the cityscapes and the people, but most of all for the food. It's not something that I am likely to do at all though, because doing Japan how I'd want to do it would mean spending assloads of money.

Other top contenders would be Central & Eastern Europe, India, and Russia. Or just go back to Paris. God I fucking love Paris.

I badly want to go back to Japan; my wife and I went for our honeymoon and it wasn't nearly enough time to experience everything we wanted to. I'd also really like to go to Ireland, and Turkey's been on the list almost all my life.

We're both very much like you, we like to go where locals go. I guess you could say we're more into modern culture than history, though of course a splash or two of that is great. My family's definitely the "see all the monuments" type, so it's refreshing to travel with someone that likes to travel the same way I do.

Well, I am planning a trip to NY/DC next year (if I get the money). I plan on going to a bunch of museums. I have never really been on a big trip or traveled much so I don't know what I like to do!

DC was really great for the day we spent there with friends. We saw the art museum, which was pretty good, and at the time they had an exhibition of video game art. That was amazing.

We also ended up seeing a bunch of the civil war memorials and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which was about what you'd expect.

In DC I'd highly recommend trying Ethiopian food if you haven't already. Big Ethiopian population there- there are several places to get really great, traditional food.

Checking out the Bridge to Nowhere in New Zealand. I have no idea why, but this is my number thing to see whenever I get there. I'm really hoping to go for my 40th birthday, which is less than a decade away. Saving for that will hopefully be less of a financial workout than saving up for the dream vacation I'm going to make happen next year: going to the Olympics (as a spectator, of course).

New Zealand is pretty awesome, anon, though we never hit the Bridge to Nowhere. We spent eight months on the North Island and it was GREAT. We actually were considering immigrating more permanently for a bit!

I'd love to travel the length of Vietnam. Or go to Bhutan.
