In honor (not really) of 50 Shades...

(Anonymous) 2015-02-13 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Imagine your favorite kinky fanfic - the one you've wanked off to the most, and are totally nuts for.

Imagine the author changes the names and tweaks the plot and sells it as original work.

How would the book be received? What if it were made into a movie? Would you go see it?

(and on that note I'm genuinely curious, did anyone read the 50 Shades fic back when it was a Twilight fanfiction?)

Er. It would take a lot of reworking to not get Hasbro's lawyers after them for trying to sell Transformers porn as original work. There's little enough to it beyond the porn that I don't think it would work very well as a standalone work anyway.

I would not go to see it in a movie theater but I would download it and watch it over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over

Honestly I'm not a big fan of "change the names and publish it" style fic editing, I honestly believe a fic needs LOADS more editing than that,

But I probably would give them a chance, if it did it's research and didn't push damaging or dangerous messages.

My whole problem with 50 Shades is the fact that it pushes a dangerous message that the behavior in the book is "BDSM and okay" when it's not. I don't have a problem with stories about fucked up relationships and characters. I love them. But the stories have to acknowledged that this is not a healthy relationship and not idealize or excuse the characters.

Yes Christian Grey acknowledges he's "fucked up" , but the story constantly pours "HE WAS ABUSED IT'S NOT HIS FAULT" down our throat. That's part of my biggest problem.

To be totally honest, if I'm reading erotic fantasy, and I do happen to be into ravishment/dub-con, I have zero interest in the fic's narrative getting on the moral platform and disclaiming how unhealthy everything is. I kind of feel as adults, we really should know that already, and I'm not reading porn to learn how to have a real life relationship.

though I haven't read 50 Shades of Grey, the fact that Christian and whatshername never talk about how bad their relationship was or whatever is not really the leading reason why I haven't.

but to each their own I guess.

"Yes Christian Grey acknowledges he's "fucked up" , but the story constantly pours "HE WAS ABUSED IT'S NOT HIS FAULT" down our throat. That's part of my biggest problem."

That part pisses me off a lot as someone who enjoys well written abused characters and is tired of more poorly written ones. I'm tired of "tragic backgrounds is always cliche and bad" but I also hate more cliche portrayals that make that belief up.

I want to read about abused characters who get to still be wrong, or evil or even flawed, and not having their backgrounds pulled in to justify it. Actual human beings who just happen to have some shit in their background.

SA.

In a sense, this is the biggest potential problem if my favorite smutty fic were ever movie-fied (it was originally fanfic, then spin-offs focused on OC's, and since then the author has tweaked the background stories to eliminate the original fannish origins, making it completely original fic).

It's a lot of BDSM and emotional introspection and all of that...but there's also a lot of unhealthy stuff going on (both the main characters have, at different points of their history, outright raped each other, and that's just the tip of the iceberg). Author never professes healthiness, and it's never really meant to be healthy-stuff in universe.

But if it were movie-fied, I imagine it would face the same problem as 50 Shades. Hollywood would turn it from an erotic fantasy story of two supremely fucked up individuals trying to cope with their circumstances (which are insane circumstances because they are fae and there are gods involved), into a story about two fae men trying to recover from a rough start or some shit like that, when, no, the fact that this entire thing is so fucked up is half the appeal, DO NOT PRETEND IT'S OKAY.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
My favorite erotic fic is actually original work. It's sort of... horror erotica, with things like non-con, abduction, bondage, violence, etc. There are no "abuse = love!" tropes or "love thy rapist", but I think that's part of the appeal to me. Suffice to say, it would not make a great movie. Especially because it's m/m and therefore unlikely to overwhelm the mama porn crowd.

If it were a movie, um. I would see it and wear big sunglasses and a huge hat and a full body snowsuit and hide in the back row.

I can't think of anything offhand that would adapt well. Address Unknown would at least be workable as WAFFy fantasy romance, but everything else that comes to mind is either too fandom-specific to adapt, or too sexist to work as an actual story.

Since my favorite kinky fics are all m/m, none of them would ever become mainstream if published as original works. I'd probably buy it, but I wouldn't go see it in theaters if it became a movie. I mean, I fap to that; if I decide to watch it, I'll watch it at home.

Eh, we're going to get there eventually.

Re: In honor (not really) of 50 Shades...

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't even touch it. I already read it and when you change the names and tweak stuff so that the characters I want to read about aren't themselves anymore, I don't care about your story anymore.

Re: In honor (not really) of 50 Shades...

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I am surprisingly not bothered by this. I mean, I guess it's case by case, but if it's an AU, and chances are the characters are a bit OOC anyway (because most people will always write a bit OOC) and the plot in the fic doesn't really have anything to do with the original plot anyway... you're practically reading an original fic just with existing names already.

Most the 'kinky fanfic' I've read has been almost pure porn so I think they would have trouble turning it into a Hollywood film. (Granted, I guess that's what 50 shades is, but it supposedly has a sliver of story?)

The longer stuff with well written sex scenes...idk, maybe.

Re: In honor (not really) of 50 Shades...

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
They'd have to take out a lot of stuff that ties it to its world, but I'm sure they could come up with some other science fictiony stuff to make it work.

Idk. Fish people mpreg? I doubt it would reach 50 shades level.

Most of my favorite kinky fics are too short to be made into a book. I like short things with lots of smut and maybe a tiny little bit of plot.

If it was made into a short film? Yeah probably. But otherwise there would be length issues as a lot of the porny fic I like and bookmark is pretty short.

It would make BANK, but only on Amazon. Because it's just porn, yo. Interrogation porn. Not a lot of mainstream appeal, but that view count tho.

Why not, everyone went to see Star Wars.

I would definitely read the serial numbers filed off, because when I'm looking for kinky fic I'm looking for the kink rather than the characters.

I would also go nuts over a movie version. i don't think i could watch it in the cinema though, because i would just be ridiculously turned on and having to wait until i got home to wank would be terrible.

as for how they would be received: terribly. everyone would judge it as awful and dangerous and disgusting. Hooray!

Re: In honor (not really) of 50 Shades...

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
It could not possibly come out in theatres, as every three paragraphs, there was gratutious and possibly physically impossible sex. I probably would watch it on the low, after it became available online. Key scenes that would need to be involved if it came out in theaters: the scene where the guy wanks off the lady under the table while they're having dinner (in a public place with her husband across from them), the sex in the cave scene, and the subsequent betrayal (but no visuals for the rape scene that follows it, only the guy's look of disappointment in himself). What an awful fic. I will always love it.

But seriously, there is one that portrayed sex realistically and the plot was pretty good, so I would like to see that one, and another one, in which the sex hadn't happened, as the author never finished it, but the plot was intriguing and all the characters and the setting were amazing.

Re: In honor (not really) of 50 Shades...

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
It wouldn't be very marketable, given that it's over 600,000 words and still being written. But even more than that, and aside from the author saying she's against scrubbing the serial numbers off to publish, it just wouldn't make a good film. It's het, so there's maybe more of a market than there'd be for m/m or f/f stuff, but it's from one character's point of view and a lot of her days are spent scrubbing floors and cooking and generally trying to keep herself occupied. And so much of the plot revolves around her changing thoughts and feelings rather than, say, sword fights or explosions or overthrowing a corrupt government or whatever. Plus the male lead's not conventionally attractive.

I tried reading Masters of the Universe after 50 Shades came out, since it's still available as a pdf you look. I think I made it like three paragraphs in.

I'd end up buying the book(s) but not watching the movie(s).

And no, I didn't read it when it was a fic, but I did read a bit when it was a book. It was... special. I think I said it before, but it reminds me of the stuff you find on the front page of ffnet that gets a thousand reviews from 13yo who don't know better. How long before we get another book based on 50 Shades, though?
