In honor (not really) of 50 Shades...
(Anonymous) 2015-02-13 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)Imagine the author changes the names and tweaks the plot and sells it as original work.
How would the book be received? What if it were made into a movie? Would you go see it?
(and on that note I'm genuinely curious, did anyone read the 50 Shades fic back when it was a Twilight fanfiction?)

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 12:06 am (UTC)(link)But I probably would give them a chance, if it did it's research and didn't push damaging or dangerous messages.
My whole problem with 50 Shades is the fact that it pushes a dangerous message that the behavior in the book is "BDSM and okay" when it's not. I don't have a problem with stories about fucked up relationships and characters. I love them. But the stories have to acknowledged that this is not a healthy relationship and not idealize or excuse the characters.
Yes Christian Grey acknowledges he's "fucked up" , but the story constantly pours "HE WAS ABUSED IT'S NOT HIS FAULT" down our throat. That's part of my biggest problem.
Re: In honor (not really) of 50 Shades...
(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 12:11 am (UTC)(link)though I haven't read 50 Shades of Grey, the fact that Christian and whatshername never talk about how bad their relationship was or whatever is not really the leading reason why I haven't.
but to each their own I guess.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 12:30 am (UTC)(link)That part pisses me off a lot as someone who enjoys well written abused characters and is tired of more poorly written ones. I'm tired of "tragic backgrounds is always cliche and bad" but I also hate more cliche portrayals that make that belief up.
I want to read about abused characters who get to still be wrong, or evil or even flawed, and not having their backgrounds pulled in to justify it. Actual human beings who just happen to have some shit in their background.

It's a lot of BDSM and emotional introspection and all of that...but there's also a lot of unhealthy stuff going on (both the main characters have, at different points of their history, outright raped each other, and that's just the tip of the iceberg). Author never professes healthiness, and it's never really meant to be healthy-stuff in universe.
But if it were movie-fied, I imagine it would face the same problem as 50 Shades. Hollywood would turn it from an erotic fantasy story of two supremely fucked up individuals trying to cope with their circumstances (which are insane circumstances because they are fae and there are gods involved), into a story about two fae men trying to recover from a rough start or some shit like that, when, no, the fact that this entire thing is so fucked up is half the appeal, DO NOT PRETEND IT'S OKAY.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 12:08 am (UTC)(link)If it were a movie, um. I would see it and wear big sunglasses and a huge hat and a full body snowsuit and hide in the back row.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 02:28 am (UTC)(link)I would also go nuts over a movie version. i don't think i could watch it in the cinema though, because i would just be ridiculously turned on and having to wait until i got home to wank would be terrible.
as for how they would be received: terribly. everyone would judge it as awful and dangerous and disgusting. Hooray!
Re: In honor (not really) of 50 Shades...
(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 03:26 am (UTC)(link)But seriously, there is one that portrayed sex realistically and the plot was pretty good, so I would like to see that one, and another one, in which the sex hadn't happened, as the author never finished it, but the plot was intriguing and all the characters and the setting were amazing.
Re: In honor (not really) of 50 Shades...
(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 03:40 am (UTC)(link)I tried reading Masters of the Universe after 50 Shades came out, since it's still available as a pdf you look. I think I made it like three paragraphs in.
Re: In honor (not really) of 50 Shades...
And no, I didn't read it when it was a fic, but I did read a bit when it was a book. It was... special. I think I said it before, but it reminds me of the stuff you find on the front page of ffnet that gets a thousand reviews from 13yo who don't know better. How long before we get another book based on 50 Shades, though?
