I always thought maybe Glee was under pressure to be a lot of things? It seemed to want to be for theater geek types, but also for American Idol fans, etc. Although apparently some of the biggest complaints - character inconsistency, for one thing - are pretty typical of Ryan Murphy.

Eh, maybe you aren't supposed to but I still genuinely enjoyed the first two seasons. (Maybe even bits of the third? Can't remember how long I watched.)

It was a silly ass show, but it was entertaining.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-15 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Well it might just Fox. I can't really think of any show on Fox that hasn't run so long that everything good about it has basically been neutered.

Yeah. I was one of the people who genuinely enjoyed it for the campy fun it was.

But, it went down the drain in season 3, and I stopped watching early season 4.

Same.

I loved, totally unironically, the first two seasons. They were fun and silly and, barring a few missteps, the characters were engaging. I was going through a bad patch with my depression at the time it began, and I happily confess that there were times it was the highlight of my week. It was something I looked forward to.

For me it went completely downhill in season three with all the random new characters coming in for an episode or three (from that spin-off reality mess) and nothing gelled anymore. The massive overemphasis on Kurt and Blaine didn't help either. Far too often it felt as though the rest of the cast were supporting characters, and their own storylines and potential was shooed aside for more Kurt and Blaine (terrible, overdone) drama screentime.

Plus it suffers greatly from Supernaturalitis in that it's dragging on well past its natural end (didn't think out that whole "seniors will graduate" thing, didja boys?) and becoming a repetitive mess.

I also loved the first 2 seasons but it became a clusterfuck.

I will stand by the "Darren Criss sent this show straight to hell" statement till the day I die.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-16 05:27 am (UTC)(link)

Yes, of course! That´s why his songs sell so well and Klaine is the most popular ship. :)

(Anonymous) 2015-02-16 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, of course! Because quality of a show is directly tied to its popularity. :)

(Anonymous) 2015-02-17 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Except the show started going quickly downhill mid-way through season one long before Darren Criss was cast.

Honestly, I stopped liking that show when it condemned Finn for being uncomfortable sharing a room with Kurt.

So wait a minute. This guy has had a crush on him for ages. Now he's supposed to be okay with sleeping in the same room? Changing in front of him? Really? Change one of their genders. Is that okay now?

Kurt is an annoying character to begin with but that was just too goofy.

They address that in the second season,

"Look, I know I shouldn't have used that word in your basement, but it's not like you were innocent. I really like you, Kurt. But the fact of the matter is, the way you were all over me last year? if I did that to a girl, she'd take out a restraining order."

And burt tells Kurt later, "i was talking to Carole, and you weren't totally honest with me. She told me that you had a crush on Finn and you weren't afraid to show it."

I enjoyed the first few seasons but it lost my interest somewhere in the 3rd, don't know why but it stopped being as much fun for me. I still look back fondly on it though.

I watched Nip/Tuck for way too many seasons and always want to warn people about him, lol. He doesn't make consistently great shows, he makes crackfic in show form with occasional great moments. I hatewatch AHS every year (except Coven, I was too bored), but this past season was the only one I halfway enjoyed, mostly for the supporting cast. Curious to see what they do when they can't just fill it up with Jessica Lange fanfic anymore.

IS THIS SHOW ACTUALLY STILL ON? HOW IS THAT A THING?

I gave up when I realized how bad some of the tracks they were happy to publish were. If you're gonna sing covers, son, you gotta have something to recommend your version.

-Sigh-

I get you, OP.

Remember when Glee was a comedy that only briefly touched on drama instead of a trainwreck that tried to spew out 10 aesops per episode?

4th season best season. I love glee and at this point I can only rme at everyone whining about it like it's an olympic competition.

Text: I miss what this show used to be! The first two seasons were fun and glorious!

Damn you Ryan Murphy for ruining everything!

S!B you were only supposed to like this show “ironically’.

I liked the first couple seasons too, until the show started feeling the need to address every single hot button issue ever. Gay bashing is in the news? Here's an episode where Kurt gets gay bashed! School shootings suddenly on everyone's radar? School shooting episode! Trans issues getting a jump in visibility? An established character is now trans! Add to that the whole mess that was the Glee Project, forcing the show to shoehorn in constant new characters no one gave a crap about and who half the time were terrible actors (seriously, was the Irish kid any good on the reality show cause he sucked on the actual show, how did he win) and it just messed up the show's entire flow. After a while it started to feel like the show was stuffing 3-4 seasons worth of storylines into like four episodes. Then half the characters people cared about graduated and the show went all Saved by the Bell: The New Class on us and it was pretty much done at that point.

I hear ya. I only watch now for Kurt, but I like to pretend the show ended at the end of season 2.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-16 05:31 am (UTC)(link)

I just want it to end already!

I just watch the Klaine relevant episodes, but still, it´s horrible to see such talented actors working with terrible scripts and ridiculous storylines.

Fuck you, RIB!

I know revisionist history happens often in fandom's, but I thought the first season was good, second had it's moments. When looking forward to season four it sounded like a campy mess that I was looking forward to ironically, unfortunately I just found most of the season bad.

I like the show and have been liking it for the past five seasons... And I'm sad that it's ending.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-18 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't figure out how Ryan Murphy can simulataneously make shows that are total trainwrecks but also incredibly tedious. Glee got too boring for me to even hatewatch--although I do like a lot of the actors and hope they successfully move on to bigger and better things.

I think a lot of its problems were already there in the start, though, and just didn't stand out as much because of the novelty and because they were obscured in world-building/set-up kinds of things. And I pretty much hated Will from day one.
