Tinhat moments

(Anonymous) 2015-02-22 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you ever had a brief tin hat moment where you think '...I wonder...?'

Re: Tinhat moments

(Anonymous) 2015-02-22 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Do moments brought on by paranoid disorder count? If so, yes, all the time.

The closest I've come is believing Lee Pace/Richard Armitage could possibly be a thing. Not that it matters to me, but that's the one I could believe.

I know it's a weird one but I'm sort of on the fence. It'd be funny if the tinhatters turned out to be right, though.

Re: Tinhat moments

I actually found the "evidence" hilariously awkward. I'm not saying they're not together, they could be, but if you followed me around with my close friends, you'd probably see the same things.

Wearing each other's clothes, travelling to see each other, spending holidays with friend's family, having their family added on social media. Even one of them (was it Richard? Idk) showing up at a show the other was in several times and hanging out afterwards.

The only difference between a close romantic relationship and a close platonic one is what you call it.

Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine

All the time. I can't help it. I scream "Stop it, brain!" at myself. It doesn't really work.

The fact that Pine seems at least bicurious doesn't help.

Nor does the fact that Quinto said his first crush was on a young Brad Pitt and then I saw People Magazine comparing Pine's looks to Pitt's, saying he was basically the younger version…

But I don't SERIOUSLY think they're together or anything.

If it makes you feel any better I agree that they have incredible chemistry. You can tell they adore each other.

I don't think they're together either but they seem comfortable with each other and have a close friendship. People ships those kinds of relationships in media all the time, so this isn't surprising to me.

In the American special of Top Gear (the first one), there's a scene where Jeremy Clarkson grins at Hammond and it's just... tender. No other word for it.

Made me feel like a complete nutter, but I couldn't unsee it damnit.

As a historian? All the fucking time.

But it's important to remember that actual conspiracies are incredibly rare. We are mostly dumb apes feeling around, doing what we think is right.

But: I believe, and perhaps someday will be able to prove, that most of our current cultural problems are rooted in the advertising industry. That isn't to say that we'd magically not have any problems had certain developments in advertising not happened during WWI and the 1920s. But many of our current issues in the US are caused and perpetuated by our being split up into different consumer constituencies.

Why do you think a lot of gamergate is so misogynistic? Simple. They've based their identity around consumption--in this case, gaming and related gaming stuff. Advertisements have taught them that
1. Masculinity is very important
2. They express masculinity through consuming shit
3. Video games are masculine

Ergo, video games becoming a little more feminine is horrifying. The Sims was seen as a Girl Game so that's okay, but FPSes? Hardcore RPGs? Terrifying.

How are you defining conspiracies here? Because pathological cynicism, greed and dodgy dealings behind the scenes in politics and corporate business is, well, pretty common and fairly well documented.

Re: Tinhat moments

Yeah, that seems hardly tinhat at all.

Quite believable, tbh. Another worrying issue is the sheer amount of wealth and power concentrated in the hands of a small amount of people.

I mean, I know they say we're past the days of mad monarchs, but I do wonder if it's more like they've changed the names around.

How come whenever I see people decrying Gamergate about being a misogynistic harassment movement they never condemn/acknowledge the shit the antis do?

lol sorry but nothing is ever gonna convince me that gamergate bros are nothing but a bunch of whiny spiteful overgrown children. if they ever had a relevant point to prove, it's lost.

their behaviour is terrible and they should feel embarassed

Some anti-Gamergate people doing bad things doesn't mean Gamergate isn't misogynistic or that it doesn't involve harassment of women.

You're engaging in a logical fallacy called tu quoque.

Ryden trash

(Anonymous) 2015-02-22 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Recently Brendon Urie came out as bisexual, and for the first time ever I started to wonder if there was some truth to the Ryden stuff. Which is weird because I had never shipped them in the first place.

I'm kind of there with Thorin and Bilbo, still confused as to why the acorn scene is in BOTFA if not to show us that Thorin Oakenshield is totes in love with Bilbo Baggins and that love is the only thing that is allowing him to keep any semblance of his true self.

I'm looking forward to the EE and hearing what everyone has to say about that scene.

I know how this sounds.

I really love conspiracy theories so there's always a part of me that wants them to be true.
My worst secret is that I find some of the "evidence" for Larry pretty convincing. (Larry = the theory that Louis and Harry from One Direction are in a rship)

I think the closest I've come is being forced to admit that Misha Collins and Jensen Ackles would make a cute couple...in some alternate universe where they weren't both straight and happily married to other people with kids.

Re: Tinhat moments

I hate that we have an Xbox One because I know the camera is always on and they're fully capable of recording and disseminating everything I say and do in my living room... maybe only for advertisement purposes, but still, it's creepy as hell. Especially after all the recent hacks showing how easily that information could be used by another party. :/

Re: Tinhat moments

(Anonymous) 2015-02-23 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
The whole KStew and RPats fallout had me tinhatting it pretty hard.

Their relationship was basically just there to sell the Twilight movie series and what better way to make it fall apart and go away? A cheating scandal. It's easier for the woman to take the fall in the media, so KStew is caught cheating, there's fallout, and the relationship that was basically one big promo for the movies crumbles away.

I don't usually think like this at all, so I have no idea where it came from.
