Sort of Based on #1

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-03-05 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
What is that one show/movie/book/game/series that you love so much it makes you forgive all the negatives of it?

Mine would be Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. This is my all time favorite game and I consider it near perfect. Because of this I ignore all the shitty things about it like the sub par graphics and the (fucking) water temple.

Another is probably the MCU. I love it as a whole so much, even Captain America: The First Avenger can't reduce how awesome I think it is. It helps that it has one of the best fandoms I have seen.

TBH, I get that way about everything I really, really like. I can acknowledge the flaws but my mind just completely skips over them. So it's basically "all of my favorite things".

If I had to name one, though, X-Files. God I love it, but even I have to acknowledge there are a lot of times when it's slow and dorky and bad, and the metaplot made no sense.

I used to watch random episodes of the X-Files so my knowledge of it is stupidly random. Like...the only episode I really remember is the one with...the trees that had...alien (?) bees in them that killed people?

I'm the same way. A lot of the stuff I like is deeply flawed (Blade Runner, for example.) I simply pretend those flaws aren't there.

Same, honestly. Nothing is perfect, especially if it's long running, and also, nothing is how I would've done it - which may not even be a fault on the writer's part, but rather, a matter of preference.

Middle Earth. I mean, besides the fact that I don't always love Tolkien's writing style or his characterization (or lack thereof), my moral viewpoint is the opposite of the one in his books in so many ways. And yet I love this world so much I don't care.

Also Babylon 5. When I think about it, I admit that mostly I like season 2-4. 1 and 5 have a lot of weaknesses. But 2-4 are so spot on perfection that it more than makes up for the weaker first and last seasons.

Doctor Who (both Classic and New), for thing I love that has the most actual problems and still love watching just as much after reading in-depth about said problems.

Fuck the Water Temple.

But hmm... it'd probably be RTD era Who for me. I (pseudo)-forgive what it did to Harriet Jones and things like the Manhatten Dalek episode. It just has so much pure emotion and delight and wonder and general love for the ordinary human and what all of us are capable of...

It took me on a journey, and for that I can accept all of its flaws.

That's how I feel about Moffat's Who. Well, Who in general, but I like the wonder and style of Moffat era better so it is easier for me to excuse the problems I do know are there (though I maintain that there are equal problems in both eras).

Oh yeah I can totally feel that about OoT. Even if I think some of the other zelda games are "objectively" better in one way or another, ocarina's still my fave because its flaws just don't even register to me.

Trying to think of others, and I agree with the anon who said they get like that about everything. I definitely gloss over the flaws of things I like! But I think a big one for me is Gunnerkrigg Court...like back when I started reading it I wasn't even super into it, but something changed and now I don't even see the things that used to bother me about it (or rather, I see them and just completely ignore them haha).

I've never thought of OoT's graphics being sub-par. They were about on par for the N64, which to me always looked like shit compared to the Playstation even though it lacked the weird texture wiggle of Playstation (which is really really obvious in SH1 and MGS1 but nearly all PSX games have the issue.) You get used to it.

It seems like everything I love is "problematic" in some way so I ignore all of it.

But I'd second Middle-earth. To me, it is perfect. I don't include the movies in it (those are shit). But the books and the world are perfection.

Probably FFVII. Okay, so, it wasn't the greatest game of all time. There were issues with pacing and the graphics don't really hold up, and the translation is horrible.

...But despite all that, the charm of the game really shines through. It's not perfect, but maybe the flaws are part of what made it so memorable.

Yu Yu Hakusho and Flame of Recca are the two that spring to mind for me.

Which, strangely(?), coincides with my general apathy to look for fanworks/create fanworks for them. I love them too much as they are to go looking for more.

I'm not sure there's any one thing I forgive all negatives for. Maybe Middle Earth?

This is a difficult question for me because I readily acknowledge most issues with the media I love and continue to enjoy it regardless. I don't typically let negatives throw me off unless they're overwhelming, and I can sometimes just shut off and enjoy.

...I want to say Dragon Age, but I hate The Fade a fucking lot, find The Deep Roads to be wayyyyy too long, was frustrated by how repetitive the gameplay (and environments) in DA2 was, and was even more frustrated by how boring most of the quests in DA:I were. Still...I love Dragon Age. So I guess that?

Hmmm, TES? The main games, not TESO (which is a lore-breaking abomination that I refuse to acknowledge. Seriously, fuck TESO.) I know the lore is a clusterfuck of time-travelling space robots, Akatosh-Lorkhan-Talos-Sithis-Anu-Boethiah-Pelinal-whoever all being the same fucking being, CHIM, Akavir/Atmora being a different time AND place, so much secret space travel, etc. all as a backdrop for hilariously broken games that seem so generic fantasy-ish on the surface. But I basically love every bit of it. Especially the zany shit. The lore is just so immense and weird and deep, it really separates TES from any other rpg series imo (hell, any other fantasy universe I've ever seen aside from Tolkien's).

I also choose to ignore a lot of the negatives of the Harry Potter books. This one is tricky though because I honestly disliked a huge chunk of HBP and basically all of DH. Books 1-5 are literally flawless though and I will fight anyone who says otherwise. :P

Uh, also District 9? There are no negatives to District 9. None.

The water temple is a lot easier on your 30th replay lol. But no seriously, I feel like I've forgotten the frustration since I've replayed that game enough times now that I generally don't get too stuck anymore. Majora's Mask is harder to me just because there is a time limit and the later temples can take forever if you don't remember what you're doing.

Zelda franchise as a whole I love and I tend to forgive even the bad games, I actually don't have many Zelda games I hate but the ones that I have trouble replaying are the ones where nintendo tried too hard to be innovative with the controls (don't like the touchscreen DS games, especially the one where you have to blow into the mic to play music, and Skyward sword I would have loved if not for the wii motion plus.)

I also love Kingdom Hearts enough that I have played all the side games and patiently waited for 3 to finally come. 3 will come... some day...
