The thing for me is that even though Robin and Nami can (and should!) be strong fighters, they are rarely allowed to show it? Take Dressrosa for an example. Franky, Zoro, and Luffy all got their fights, and Usopp had his awesome God Usopp and sniper-in-the-background moments. Robin? A failed attempt at stopping Sugar, and when she reached the Flower Field she was put on the sidelines to protecting Rebecca. Diamante didn't even sneak an attack past Kyros so we could see Robin defend herself and Rebecca with force, only the rain thing.

Nami, meanwhile, can wield freaking thunder (and would be a main fighter if she were a dude, let's be honest), but rarely actually gets to fight an outright battle. It makes sense for her character to avoid fights, but seen in context with all other female characters it's just frustrating.

Same with Rebecca. She's a gladiator, but has never hurt anyone and doesn't use her blade. When facing Diamante, she's nearly defeated before she's saved by her dad. Who even yells at her when she's gearing up to help him and join the fight.

Have any female characters won a fight on their own afetr the timeskip? Protagonists and villians alike? I honestly don't remember, which tells how much attention I haven't paid.

What irks me about Rebecca's storyline is not that she doesn't fight or get revenge, it's about how good and inspiring it could have been. Oda could have drawn parallel between her and king Riku, it's nice to have rulers who truly believe in non violence methods, especially in a fighting shounen series. It could be a chance to explore that ideology more. Like when Vivi stopped Luffy from picking a fight when they first got to Drum island (I cried a little at that scene when I first read it), it's a great lesson and adds to Vivi's character. Here we just get talking and some flash back panels lost between all the back story and character arcs for characters that don't even matter.

DA

Rebecca's storyline is what drove me away from One Piece, quite possibly for good. It started off with such promise, like you said. And then Oda completely turned it around to use it as a mouthpiece for a 'women are delicate flowers who should be protected from doing anything' message. I mean, heck, the big subtext of the flashbacks she and the Soldier (Kyros) had was that 'fathers can't be there forever; they have to teach their children well enough that they can stand on their own someday.'

So what happens when Rebecca finally comes within sight of her goal, standing ready to fight the man who killed her mother? She panics, screams, cries, and tries to hide. And then her dad comes in to save her, because don't worry! Daddy's gonna be there forever to protect her; we were just kidding earlier.

I would have been happy with Rebecca fighting on her own -- there even was a convenient cliff edge nearby so she could win by ring out, in her usual style. I would also have been really happy with a father-daughter team fight -- Rebecca and Kyros working together to avenge their family. Maybe Rebecca could have used her dodging and deflection to lure out Diamante's attacks so Kyros could attack while he was off-balance. And, of course, there could always have been a truly surprising non-violent resolution that Rebecca could come up with. Whatever. There were a million ways to handle the resolution of the storyline that didn't involve making Rebecca into a helpless crying baby, and outright stating that was a good thing.

These days, I'm looking forward a lot more to other series in Jump. Food Wars has some great female characters (even if the art gets a little racy during the foodgasms). Gakkyu Hotei's also had a few decent female characters, and I'm looking forward to the introduction of Kijima, the third Divine Tongue. World Trigger's female characters are a little underplayed, but they're still treated as equals to the boys. And so on. I was a huge fan of One Piece for many years... but I don't feel the need to keep up with it when it's disappointed me so badly.

I think Alabasta was handled better, Vivi has great character development and proves herself to be a good future leader for her people. The whole Dressrosa arc just seems like Oda eventually forgot what he sets out to do and it turns into a mess of characters and story lines. One piece used to be one of the more progressive shounen manga, sure most female characters are drawn sexily but they are badass, have their own story lines and developed nicely (not to mention Mr.2 Bon Kurei. I love him). Now it feels old fashioned next to more recent shounen mangas, which seems to becoming better in the female character aspect (not great though, it's sill shounen manga).

I was surprised by how entertaining Shokugeki no Soma is. The art is very good, all the food orgasm is hilarious. That there are plenty fanservice of guys next to the girls help.

I mostly just read gag manga these days. Next to Soma I love Ansatsu Kyoushitsu. It's fun and teach kids very good life lessons.

Sorry if my reply seems jumbled, for some reason my head feels very disoriented, i just can't seems to put my words straight. Being ESL doesn't help.

You know, I don't think they have. I'm don't think Nami got a one-on-one battle during Fishman Island, did she? Robin didn't, I'm sure of that.

The idea of Rebecca winning fights without using violence isn't bad or anything, as you said, it could have been good and inspiring. I actually really like the idea from the anon below that Rebecca could have used her usual finishing move by tripping Diamente over the edge of the cliff. That would have been an incredible way for her to win, given her history. Instead Kyros comes in to save the day. :/

I'm still wondering why Senor got a flashback, tbh. Is Lucy Anne going to be important later on? Did any other villain underling get a flashback so far?

+1

Not to mention they only duel other females.
