I don't know this fandom. What were people objecting to about the story?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-20 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
The biggest objection I think was that it was a recovery fic and the MC's psychiatrist suggested a controlled meeting with the main character's main attacker from the game about a year or year and a half post-game. The main character kind of took it from there and started to make it less formal, lies to his psych, and develops romantic feelings. He constantly questions himself throughout.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
and the author got death and rape threats? JFC. People can be so sickening.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it was just so... ugh. She was always up front about not being a psychiatrist, obvs, and that this kind of relationship is incredibly problematic, but because she could really describe the main character's personal narration and trauma is what really resonated with people, and didn't seem to matter to the more violent commenters.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Even if there were problematic points in the fic, nothing would justify that kind of comment. :(

(Anonymous) 2015-03-20 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
The Outlast fandom is pretty batshit crazy. I'm not surprised this happened.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-20 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
great choice of language for replying to a secret involving mentally ill people there :-/

(Anonymous) 2015-03-20 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Some other fics really could have warranted attack over that one.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Well, not attack, but critique.

Not like this.

so, is it something like the usual

"this is offensive to real rape survivors! blah blah blah *person then wishes the other person was raped" (omg wtf?)

'cause i'm so sick of that

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, like the, "AND THEN YOU'LL KNOW!" thing

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 12:46 am (UTC)(link)

I'm pretty pro-social justice, but even I stay away from the ableism/mental health sections, (despite having mental health issues myself) because everyone there is so incredibly picky and explosive. Not surpassed this happened tbh.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, I'm the opposite. I've given up on all other areas of social justice because they're so full of hypocrites who don't give a damn about ableism (mental or physical).

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
I've a met a few decent people here and there, but the whole movement just bugs me on how no one actually pays attention to ACTUAL pressing ableist issues like the dangerous social stigma or poor medical care. All I ever see is "omg this one person said the word "stupid" and "crazy" in the same sentence!!!!11! that's an ableist slur omg how dare you?!?!?" And just ugh shut up already.

Gods, this. I understand where words can be microaggressions, but speaking as a legit crazy person (bipolar, anxiety, ADD), I could give two shits about people saying something's "crazy awesome", when there's so many more useful things that could be done. Not everyone can go out and be an advocate, true, but I've been personally helped a LOT by essays by people about how they manage their mental illness. There's one particular essay by a friend of mine who compares her bipolar disorder to lycanthropy, and the way that she wrote it is extremely well; having read that helped my fiancee SO much when she got her bipolar disorder. She said she probably would have been suicidal if she hadn't read it. So, it's not like you have to go to rallies or political functions or whatnot to make a difference.

And yes, yes, you can do both at once, but I'm talking about the people who just focus on words and don't bother with anything else. I also notice that it's not uncommon to see able-bodied/neurotypical people jumping on the "ableist words" bandwagon, and I've had them yell at me for calling myself crazy. I've seen one neurotypical person claim she was "triggered" by the use of crazy in a casual, joking, non-derogatory fashion. There's a line and some people have trampled way past it... and often, over neurodiverse and disabled people in the process.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
Augh I know right, it's just so damn dumb. And I find it pretty offensive that neurotypical people apparently think we're so fragile and naive, we can't handle it if someone says "stupid" casually in a sentence. Like how insulting do you have to be. And of course, these same people are the ones who pledge themselves on being the best activists for ableism, you know, despite the fact that they never actually listen or pay attention to actual people with mental health issues. -__-
And every time I point this out, I either get yelled at or completely ignored. So I just don't even bother anymore.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, this reminds me of that one Homestuck AU set in a mental health facility where the author was getting shit for the characters having self-hate about their condtions because "ABLEISM! WHY DON'T THEY LOVE THEIR BIPOLAR SYMPTOMS?!"

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
:((

I've seen posts about how facility/institution AUs are ableist in and of themselves and I was just like ????

Text: I’ve been out of the Outlast fandom for a while, but this fic was still one of my all-time faves. It was absolutely beautiful and had its own fandom. I recently found out that hate (originating on Tumblr, not surprising) migrated to the actual fic, and pseudo psychs were attacking the author for writing about problematic themes. They ahdn’t updated it for a long time anyway, but the attacks made them delete everything else they’d written.

s!b: mentally ill people can’t write about the mentally ill from a horror game without receiving death and rape threats.

Eddie/Waylon isn't my thing so I wasn't aware of this, but a massive LOL at that particular fic being singled out in the sea of "problematic" fanworks this pairing inspires. I'm sure this attack had nothing to do with her getting a bazillion hits and comments and was totally rooted in real-world issues and concerns. I'm also sure the little busybodies who come up with this shit never have any dark thoughts or fantasies of any kind themselves. When you're not in a good place personally, it can be really hard to accept the affection and admiration people have for you and stupidly easy to take negativity to heart and believe it's more valid somehow, but it's not. People who write rape and death threats to another human being over a piece of fiction about two fictional people are the ones who don't belong, not a fanwriter who was nothing but nice to people.
